Other reviews are including the rest of the park which is really lovely. The ACTUAL dog park in winter is pretty atrocious and I don't think it's much better otherwise unless they open up the lawn area which is locked currently (2/10/2025). It's a fenced dirt/sand area with a covered area to sit, a water spigot, two trash cans. Needless to say, the dirt gets muddy and puddly in winter. People pick up after their dogs, so that's a relief. The rest of the park is beautiful but a leashed area. The park is south facing so it was nice and sunny the day I was there. There's parking in a medium size lot.

Welcome to Summerlake Dog Park
For dog owners in Tigard, Oregon, finding a reliable and enjoyable space for their canine companions to run, play, and socialize off-leash is a cornerstone of responsible pet ownership. The Summerlake Dog Park, nestled within the beautiful Summerlake Park, offers a dedicated area for this purpose. While the larger park boasts serene walking trails, picturesque ponds, and diverse wildlife, the dog park itself provides a specific, fenced environment designed for canine exercise. This article aims to provide a clear, engaging, and factual overview of the Summerlake Dog Park, helping local residents understand its unique characteristics, what amenities are available, and how to best utilize this space for their furry friends, regardless of the season.
The Summerlake Dog Park is located at 11450 SW Winter Lake Dr, Tigard, OR 97223, USA. This places it within the Summerlake Park complex, a significant green space in Tigard. The park is situated in a suburban subdivision, offering a tranquil setting away from major thoroughfares, yet remaining easily accessible for local residents. For those driving, the park features a medium-sized parking lot, which generally provides sufficient space for visitors. However, during peak times, especially on sunny days or weekends, it can fill up. The park's south-facing orientation means the dog park area often enjoys ample sunlight, a welcome feature during Oregon's cloudier months. While specific public transit routes directly to the dog park aren't highlighted, Tigard has a robust transportation network, and researching TriMet bus stops in the vicinity of SW Winter Lake Drive would likely reveal options for those relying on public transport. The dog park itself is approximately 2/3 acre in size and is a double-gated, fenced enclosure, offering a secure environment for off-leash play.
The Summerlake Dog Park, while part of a larger, amenity-rich park, focuses on providing essential services within its fenced off-leash area:
- Drinking Water: A dedicated "drinking water faucet for dogs" is available within the dog park, ensuring pups stay hydrated during their playtime. This is a significant convenience for dog owners.
- Waste Disposal: The park provides "two trash cans" and generally has "dog waste bags" available, though it's always prudent for owners to bring their own supply to ensure responsible cleanup. Reviews commend that "People pick up after their dogs, so that's a relief," highlighting the respectful community.
- Shelter: The dog park features a "covered area to sit," providing shade on sunny days and protection from rain, allowing owners a comfortable spot to supervise their dogs.
- Seating: Benches are available within the dog park shelter, offering a place for owners to rest.
- Restrooms: While not directly inside the fenced dog park, restrooms are available within the larger Summerlake Park, typically a short walk away.
- Fenced Enclosure: The park is a double-fenced enclosure, ensuring a safe and secure environment for dogs to play off-leash without concerns about them wandering off. The "double gated entry area" further enhances safety.
The Summerlake Dog Park, despite some seasonal challenges, offers several notable features and highlights:
- Dedicated Fenced Area: Its primary highlight is being a fully fenced off-leash area, providing peace of mind for owners, especially those with less reliable recall or puppies. The "double gated entry" system adds an extra layer of security.
- All-Seasons Functionality (with caveats): While the groundcover is primarily "dirt/sand," making it "pretty atrocious" and "muddy and puddly in winter," it still provides an off-leash option year-round. This contrasts with some grass-only parks that might become completely unusable in wet conditions.
- Landscaped Design: The area is "nicely landscaped," suggesting some thoughtful design elements beyond just a bare dirt patch.
- Information Kiosk: An information kiosk is available at the entrance, likely displaying dog park etiquette and rules, which are crucial for maintaining a safe and harmonious environment for all users.
- Part of a Larger Park: The dog park is situated within the extensive Summerlake Park (approximately 30 acres), which boasts a "beautiful" landscape with "two ponds with a bridge in the middle," "rhododendron garden," "walking trails," and various sports facilities (basketball, tennis, soccer fields). While these areas are typically leashed, they offer an excellent opportunity for a pre or post-dog park leashed walk, adding variety to the outing.
- Wildlife Viewing: The larger Summerlake Park is home to "Birds, squirrels, geese, all sorts of wildlife," providing opportunities for nature observation on leashed walks.
- Community Engagement: The presence of a "covered areas for family get togethers and BBQ's" within the broader park highlights its role as a community hub for various activities.
As a public park facility managed by the City of Tigard Parks & Recreation, Summerlake Dog Park does not offer commercial promotions or special offers in the traditional sense. Its value lies in its consistent availability as a free, publicly accessible space for canine recreation. The City of Tigard provides information regarding dog park etiquette and rules, which are typically posted at the entrance to the off-leash area. These guidelines, while not "promotions," are essential for ensuring the park remains a safe and enjoyable environment for all users. Dog owners are encouraged to review these rules before using the off-leash area. Any updates on park maintenance, temporary closures, or changes in amenities would be communicated through the City of Tigard's official channels.

Summerlake Dog Park is a truly suitable and valuable resource for locals in Tigard, Oregon, and the surrounding communities, despite its seasonal quirks. Its suitability for residents stems from several key factors. Firstly, the park's fully fenced and double-gated enclosure provides a secure environment for off-leash play, offering peace of mind to owners concerned about their dog's safety or propensity to roam. This feature is particularly beneficial for those with younger dogs or dogs still mastering their recall. Secondly, the presence of essential amenities like a dedicated water faucet, trash cans, and a covered shelter significantly enhances the user experience, even if dog waste bags need to be brought independently. The fact that "People pick up after their dogs" highlights a positive community standard that contributes to the park's cleanliness.
While the "dirt/sand" surface can become "muddy and puddly in winter," this also means it drains better than pure grass in some conditions, and it still offers a usable off-leash space during the wetter months when other parks might be entirely unusable. The larger Summerlake Park context is also a huge draw; the ability to combine an off-leash romp with a serene, leashed walk around the beautiful ponds, through landscaped areas, or past sports fields, provides "plenty of room for a walk" and truly makes it "great for everyone," including dog owners. The community aspect, with generally "nice and social" owners, fosters a welcoming atmosphere where dogs and people alike can thrive. For Tigard locals seeking a dedicated, fenced off-leash area that is part of a larger, diverse recreational complex, Summerlake Dog Park offers a comprehensive solution for their canine companions' exercise and socialization needs, making it an invaluable part of the community's outdoor offerings.

Feb 11, 2025 · Isa DeanI cant say enough good things about this park. Birds, squirrels, geese, all sorts of wildlife. Plenty of room for a walk around two ponds with a bridge in the middle. Like Pokemon Go? Nice place to play the game. Basketball, tennis, soccer areas and covered areas for family get togethers and BBQ's. Bathrooms and benches and dog park too! This park is great for everyone.
Apr 05, 2024 · Heidi DixonOur dog really loves this off-leash park. Even though he is a Vizsla, he enjoys acting like a Retriever. And there are tons of tennis balls lying around which he loves searching for. Summer Lake City Park itself is wonderful since you really feel like you are on a forest path winding around the trees and up to the lake. And the Fall colors are just breathtaking!
Oct 29, 2021 · Peter CarlesimoA small to medium sized dog park. The included pictures & videos speak for themselves. It was a pleasant visit. Well heck, anywhere in Washington county is a breath of fresh air compared to Multnomah county
Jul 04, 2023 · Bobya HooverThis park has everything for you and your dog. Enclosed dog park with sand was perfect for a wet play day. The park has a paved path going around the lake so you can get your exercise too!
