I visited this area of the park with my dog multiple times and, although I was initially worried about the other big dogs, it was great. The dogs have a large area to roam, everything is fenced, and the gates have locks to ensure they remain closed. You need a card to get in, which is nice as it limits the park to dogs that have been vaccinated. There are water fountains and hoses, and the guests there are super friendly!

Welcome to Big Dogs Area
For Florida residents with larger canine companions, finding a dog park that truly caters to their needs – ample space, secure fencing, and a community of well-socialized peers – is essential. In Sunrise, within the expansive Markham Park, lies a dedicated haven known simply as the Big Dogs Area. This specific section of the broader Barkham at Markham facility is precisely what its name suggests: a fantastic, sprawling space designed for larger breeds to run, play, and socialize freely. It's a highly valued resource for local big dog owners seeking a safe and stimulating environment for their beloved pets.
The Big Dogs Area at Markham Park stands out due to its thoughtful design and commitment to safety. Visitors consistently praise the generous "large area to roam," providing plenty of room for high-energy play and extended fetch sessions. Unlike some general dog parks, this facility's emphasis on larger dogs means the space is truly adequate for their size and speed. Furthermore, the robust fencing and secure gates offer invaluable peace of mind, ensuring that even the most adventurous pups remain safely contained within the designated boundaries.
What truly sets this park apart for Florida locals is its unique access system, which prioritizes the health and safety of all canine visitors. Requiring an access card, obtained with proof of vaccination, helps ensure that only healthy, vaccinated dogs are entering the park. This proactive approach to pet safety, combined with the friendly atmosphere among dog owners, creates a welcoming and responsible community. For those with big dogs, this park isn't just a convenience; it's an essential part of their pet-owning lifestyle, fostering happy, healthy, and well-socialized furry family members.
Access to the Big Dogs Area requires entering Markham Park. Visitors should be aware that Markham Park, being a Broward County regional park, has a gate entrance fee on weekends and holidays (typically $1.50 per person, with children 5 and under usually free). During weekdays, general park admission often does not incur a gate fee. Parking is plentiful within Markham Park, with specific areas designated for the dog park, ensuring convenient access once inside the main park grounds.
A key aspect of accessibility for the Big Dogs Area is its entry system: "You need a card to get in." This card-access system, as noted by reviews, adds a layer of security and ensures that only registered, vaccinated dogs are granted entry. Obtaining this card requires providing proof of current vaccinations. Once inside, the park itself is "fully fenced" with "gates have locks to ensure they remain closed," indicating a highly secure and well-controlled environment for off-leash play. Reviewers also mention "eight-foot-wide asphalt paths that wind through the park," suggesting good internal accessibility for owners.
-
Dedicated Off-Leash Area for Large Dogs: The primary service is a spacious, fenced-in zone exclusively for big dogs, allowing them ample room to run, play, and socialize off-leash without overwhelming smaller companions.
-
Vaccination-Controlled Entry: A unique and highly valued service is the requirement of an access card, which is only issued upon providing proof of current dog vaccinations. This "limits the park to dogs that have been vaccinated," contributing significantly to a healthier and safer environment for all dogs.
-
Secure Gated Entry: The park features a "security gate" and gates with "locks to ensure they remain closed," offering controlled access and preventing accidental escapes, which is crucial for big, fast dogs.
-
Water Fountains and Hoses: Essential for hydration and cooling off in Florida's climate, the park provides "water fountains and hoses." This allows owners to easily provide fresh water to their dogs and potentially rinse them off after play.
-
Waste Management: While not explicitly detailed, the broader Barkham at Markham facility (which includes the Big Dogs Area) is known to provide "a lot of bags to collect the poop," indicating a commitment to cleanliness and responsible waste disposal.
-
Restroom Facilities: As part of Markham Park, public restrooms are available nearby, providing convenience for human visitors.
-
Expansive Play Space: A major highlight is the "large area to roam," providing ample room for big dogs to run at full speed, play fetch, and engage in high-energy activities essential for their well-being.
-
Enhanced Safety and Security: The combination of a fully "fenced" perimeter and gates with "locks to ensure they remain closed" provides a superior level of security, giving owners confidence in their dogs' safety. The access card system further enhances this by ensuring health protocols are met.
-
Vaccination Requirement: This is a unique and significant feature that promotes a healthier environment, reassuring owners that their dogs are interacting with other vaccinated pups.
-
Water Access (Fountains & Hoses): The availability of both "water fountains and hoses" is a crucial amenity in Florida's heat, allowing for easy hydration and potential cool-downs for active dogs.
-
Friendly Community: Reviewers consistently note that "the guests there are super friendly," fostering a welcoming and positive atmosphere for both dogs and their owners.
-
Well-Maintained Grounds: As part of Barkham at Markham, which is known for being "super clean," the Big Dogs Area benefits from diligent maintenance, ensuring a pleasant and hygienic environment.
-
Dedicated for Big Dogs: This specialized focus means the facilities and space are optimally designed for larger breeds, preventing issues that can arise when big and small dogs share the same limited area.
-
Affordable Daily Access: For casual visitors, a daily pass to Barkham at Markham (which includes the Big Dogs Area) is available for a modest fee, such as $5 per day per household (as of August 2021, according to a customer review). This makes it an accessible option for spontaneous visits or those not ready for an annual commitment.
-
Annual Dog Park Pass: For frequent users, Broward County Parks offers an annual dog park pass for $25 per household, covering up to three dogs, plus sales tax. This pass provides unlimited access to participating Broward County dog parks, including Barkham at Markham and its Big Dogs Area. This represents significant savings for regular visitors, essentially acting as a long-term discount.
-
Weekend/Holiday Gate Fee: While there's a small per-person gate fee for Markham Park itself on weekends and holidays ($1.50 per person, 5 and under free), this provides access to the entire park, including the valuable dog park facilities, making it a comprehensive recreational offering.
-
Required Vaccination Check: While it involves a step (bringing shot records), the requirement to prove current vaccinations to get an access card acts as a "promotion" of safety and health. It assures users that all dogs entering the park meet health standards, providing immense value in peace of mind.
It is always advisable for locals to check the official Broward County Parks website or contact Markham Park directly for the most current information on fees, pass requirements, and operating hours, as these can be updated.

The most significant advantage for locals with large breeds is the dedicated, expansive space. Big dogs need substantial room to run at full speed and engage in vigorous play to truly burn off energy and stay healthy. The "large area to roam" provided here is perfectly suited for this, allowing them the freedom essential for their physical and mental well-being, which is often lacking in smaller, general-purpose dog parks.
Furthermore, the emphasis on safety and security is paramount. The fully fenced perimeter with "gates have locks to ensure they remain closed" provides crucial peace of mind for owners. More uniquely, the requirement of an access card obtained with proof of vaccination sets a high standard for canine health within the park. This proactive measure significantly reduces the risk of illness and ensures that all dogs interacting are healthy and properly immunized, a massive benefit that fosters trust and confidence among users. As one reviewer noted, this "limits the park to dogs that have been vaccinated," directly addressing a common concern among responsible owners.
The presence of essential amenities like water fountains and hoses is also a key factor in its suitability, especially given Florida's often warm climate, ensuring dogs stay hydrated and comfortable during their playtime. The consistently friendly atmosphere among park guests further enhances the experience, creating a welcoming community for big dog owners.
In essence, the Big Dogs Area isn't just a place for large dogs to run; it's a meticulously managed, safe, and health-conscious environment where they can thrive. The combination of ample space, robust security, and a commitment to canine health through its access card system makes it an unparalleled resource for local big dog owners in South Florida, ensuring their furry giants have the best possible place to play and socialize.
