Am amazing dog park with so many options. My dog loves to get chest deep in the river and run at the water's edge and then romp amongst the trees. It's great to have so much space for our dogs to run and explore off-leash! I'm glad we worked on recall before going.

Welcome to Minnehaha Dog Park
For dog owners in Minneapolis seeking an unparalleled off-leash experience for their canine companions, Minnehaha Dog Park is often hailed as one of the best, if not *the* best, in existence. Located within the iconic Minnehaha Park at 5399 Minnehaha Park Dr S, Minneapolis, MN 55417, this is far more than your typical fenced-in dog run. It’s an expansive natural haven where dogs can truly express their instincts – from splashing in the Mississippi River to bounding through wooded trails and open fields.
What sets Minnehaha Dog Park apart is its sheer scale and diverse landscape. It's a vast open space, reportedly six acres, that allows dogs the freedom to explore and run like never before. This immense area provides countless opportunities for vigorous exercise, crucial for the physical and mental well-being of energetic dogs. It's a place where you can watch your dog revel in the joy of off-leash freedom, engaging with nature in a way that urban environments rarely allow.
Locals consistently rave about the unique feature of river access. Imagine your dog enthusiastically wading "chest deep in the river" or "run at the water's edge." This natural water element adds an entirely new dimension to playtime, especially on warm Minnesota days. While it does mean your pup will likely "get wet and dirty," the pure joy they experience is well worth bringing a towel! Minnehaha Dog Park isn't just a place to let your dog off-leash; it's an adventure waiting to happen, fostering stronger bonds between pets and their human companions through shared outdoor exploration.
---Minnehaha Dog Park is ideally located at 5399 Minnehaha Park Dr S, Minneapolis, MN 55417, USA, nestled within the larger Minnehaha Regional Park. This prime location places it along the scenic Mississippi River, offering not just a dog park but access to one of Minnesota's most iconic natural landmarks. Its position in South Minneapolis makes it accessible for residents throughout the city and even those from surrounding suburbs looking for a truly expansive off-leash experience.
Accessibility by car is facilitated by the park's well-known parking facilities. While visitors note that "you have to pay to park," there are generally both "paid and free parking is available" options within Minnehaha Regional Park, including specific pay lots. An annual Patron Parking Permit can also be purchased from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board for those who plan frequent visits to regional parks. This structured parking ensures that despite its popularity, visitors can usually find a spot, albeit sometimes requiring a fee, particularly on busy days.
The park is also well-integrated into the city's broader transportation network. Minnehaha Park itself is easily accessible via public transport, including the Metro Blue Line, with stations nearby. For those who prefer to bike or walk, the park is connected to an extensive network of trails, including those leading towards Fort Snelling State Park. This multi-modal accessibility makes Minnehaha Dog Park a convenient destination for a wide range of Minneapolis dog owners.
---Minnehaha Dog Park, operated by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, offers distinct services that make it a premier destination for dog owners:
- Expansive Off-Leash Area: The park provides a massive "six acres" of designated off-leash space, offering dogs ample room to run, play, and explore freely.
- Direct Mississippi River Access: A unique and highly valued service is the direct access to the Mississippi River. Dogs can "get chest deep in the river and run at the water's edge," providing an exciting and refreshing element to their playtime. This includes a "sandy beach on the Mississippi River."
- Varied Terrain: The park features diverse terrain, including open fields, "wooded trails," and river shoreline, allowing for varied exploration and physical stimulation for dogs.
- Natural Environment: It provides a natural, less manicured environment compared to some city parks, allowing dogs to engage with natural elements like trees and water.
- Waste Management (Implied): As a public park, it is standard for facilities for responsible pet waste disposal to be available, encouraging cleanliness. Users are reminded to "Pick up after your dog."
- Community Gathering Space: It serves as a popular gathering spot for dog owners, fostering a sense of community and providing opportunities for owners to socialize while their dogs play.
Minnehaha Dog Park boasts an array of features that solidify its reputation as an outstanding off-leash area in Minneapolis:
- Vast Open Space: Described as a "huge open space" and "six acres," the park offers an unparalleled amount of room for dogs to run, sprint, and explore freely. This immense size is a major highlight, especially for high-energy breeds.
- Mississippi River Access: The most unique and cherished feature is the direct "access to the Mississippi River." Dogs can enjoy wading, swimming, and running along the "water's edge" and on the "sandy beach," providing an exhilarating and unique play experience.
- Diverse Landscape: The park encompasses a variety of terrains, including open fields for running, "wooded trails" for exploration, and river shoreline. This diversity keeps visits engaging and stimulating for dogs.
- Natural and Less Formal Setting: Unlike some highly manicured city parks, Minnehaha Dog Park offers a more rugged and natural environment, allowing dogs to enjoy a true outdoor adventure.
- High Popularity and Socialization: It's an "amazing dog park" that "can get very crowded on weekends," indicating its immense popularity. This means a consistent presence of other dogs, providing excellent opportunities for socialization.
- Scenic Views: Being located within Minnehaha Park, the dog park benefits from the overall beauty of the regional park, including proximity to Minnehaha Falls and scenic river views, making it pleasant for owners too.
- Encourages Recall Training: The vast, open nature of the park implicitly encourages owners to have good recall training, as noted by a reviewer being "glad we worked on recall before going," which is a good practice for safety in large off-leash areas.
- Proximity to Amenities: Its location within Minnehaha Park means it's near other amenities, such as "Sea Salt for some noms," allowing for a complete outing.
As a public off-leash dog park managed by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, Minnehaha Dog Park does not offer commercial promotions or retail-style special offers. Its value is embedded in its public service provision. However, accessing this fantastic amenity does come with a specific permit requirement, which can be seen as the "cost of entry" to this exceptional resource.
For locals, the "offer" is tied to the city's off-leash dog park permit system:
- Off-Leash Dog Park Permit Required: To use Minnehaha Dog Park, all dogs must have a current off-leash dog park permit issued by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. This permit is generally required for all nine off-leash dog parks in Minneapolis.
- Annual Permit Cost (Minneapolis Residents): The annual permit fee for Minneapolis residents is typically around $38 for the first dog and approximately $27 for each additional dog.
- Annual Permit Cost (Non-Minneapolis Residents): For non-Minneapolis residents, the annual permit fee is usually higher, around $66 for the first dog and $33 for each additional dog.
- Daily Permit Option: A daily permit is also typically available for around $5 per dog, offering flexibility for occasional visitors or those wanting to try out the park before committing to an annual pass.
- Prerequisites: Before obtaining an off-leash permit, dogs must be licensed with the City of Minneapolis (if residing in Minneapolis) and have up-to-date rabies vaccinations.
- Pay Parking Fees: While the park itself doesn't have a direct "entry fee" beyond the permit, visitors should be aware that "you have to pay to park" in many of the convenient lots within Minnehaha Park. An annual Patron Parking Permit is also available for frequent visitors to regional parks with paid lots.
The continuous provision of such a large, unique, and well-maintained off-leash area with river access, facilitated by the permit system, is the significant "value" or "offer" that Minnehaha Dog Park provides to the Minneapolis community.

Its distinctive features and vast natural setting make it a local treasure, offering benefits far beyond a typical urban dog run.
The most compelling reason for its suitability is its sheer size and the unique "access to the Mississippi River." This means dogs aren't just confined to a small plot; they have "so much space to run and explore off-leash" and the exhilarating opportunity to "get chest deep in the river." This natural water feature is a game-changer for many dogs, providing cooling relief and a different kind of stimulation not found in most city parks. The diverse landscape, including "wooded trails" and open areas, ensures that every visit can be a new adventure, keeping dogs engaged and well-exercised.
While the park's immense popularity means it "can get very crowded on weekends," this also signifies a vibrant community where dogs consistently find playmates, fostering essential socialization. For locals, the experience is worth the potential crowds, emphasizing the importance of having good "recall" skills for their dogs in such a large, dynamic environment. The presence of pay parking, while a consideration, is a small price to pay for access to such a high-quality and unique amenity.
Furthermore, its location within the beautiful Minnehaha Park offers added benefits for owners, allowing for combined outings that might include enjoying the falls or grabbing a bite at nearby eateries like Sea Salt. The park provides an incredible opportunity for dogs to connect with nature, burn off significant energy, and develop crucial social skills in a truly expansive setting. For any Minneapolis local seeking an exceptional outdoor experience for their dog that goes beyond the ordinary, Minnehaha Dog Park is an indispensable destination that offers endless opportunities for canine joy and exploration.

May 05, 2025 · Minda OrinaOnly the most amazing dog park in existence!!! In reality it’s a huge open space with access to the Mississippi River. I feel like calling it a dog park doesn’t do it justice. The downside is you have to pay to park and it can get very crowded on weekends. My idea of a perfect afternoon is letting my pup play here and then head over to Sea Salt for some noms. Bring a towel because your pup will get wet and dirty!
Aug 09, 2024 · Nicole KizerWe love to come here due to the space the biggest con is needing to pay for parking within the city park but it's so we'll maintain it's worth it. Worth noting their is not a gate before the river so if you don't want your dog going right for it this may not be the right park for you but the beach is clean and beautiful and the boats are respectful!
Jan 10, 2025 · Pamela O'HaraMinnehaha Dog Park, nestled within Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis, is a delightful haven for dogs and humans alike. Spanning a spacious area along the Mississippi River, it offers a unique blend of open fields, wooded trails, and river access, providing dogs ample room to run, play, and explore off-leash. The park is well-maintained, with clearly marked trails and plenty of waste stations, ensuring a clean and enjoyable environment. The natural setting, combined with the friendly atmosphere, makes it a top spot for dog owners seeking a scenic and engaging place for their pets to socialize and exercise.
Jun 18, 2024 · Arunava BanerjeeThe only downside is that the gate at the top of the hill is left open, so if your dog explores a lot or has spotty recall, I would go to a fully fenced space. There is plenty of room to run, nicely kept trail spaces, and of course the beach and river are a huge bonus. It can get fairly busy especially along the river, so if you have a nervous or timid dog, they may prefer to be there on weekday off hours so as to not get overwhelmed. Every dog we met was the friendliest so we had no worries of running into trouble. My advice is bring a towel for wiping off sand before getting back in the car!
