Best dog park. It is not completely fenced in. And you need to carry out your poo bags and bring home (no garbage). It’s huge and the dogs love this space. Fun to see the planes come and go also.

Welcome to Airport Dog Park 1

For dog owners in Minneapolis seeking an expansive and truly unique environment for their furry companions, Airport Dog Park 1 stands out as a top contender. Located at 2501 E 61st St, Minneapolis, MN 55450, this isn't your typical neighborhood dog run. It's a vast, open space offering an adventurous outing for dogs who love to explore, run freely, and even get a little wet. Locals consistently laud it as "the best dog park," and it's easy to see why, with its remarkable size and distinct features.

What makes Airport Dog Park 1 so appealing to the Minneapolis dog community is its sheer scale. Described as "huge," it provides an immense amount of room for dogs to stretch their legs, chase balls, and engage in vigorous play. This is particularly beneficial for high-energy breeds and dogs who thrive on open spaces. Unlike many smaller, fully fenced urban dog parks, this park offers a sense of wild freedom, allowing dogs to roam and discover varied terrain, from "wooded paths" to open fields.

Beyond the abundant space, the park offers a blend of natural elements that enrich the canine experience. Dogs can navigate through "lots of trees," providing shade and interesting scents, or even venture into a "marsh if your dog likes to get wet." This diverse landscape ensures that every visit is stimulating and engaging, catering to different play styles and preferences. The unique backdrop of planes "come and go" from the nearby MSP Airport adds a fascinating, albeit subtle, layer to the park's charm, making it an experience that delights both dogs and their human companions.

Location and Accessibility

Airport Dog Park 1 is conveniently situated at 2501 E 61st St, Minneapolis, MN 55450, USA. Its location near the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) gives it its distinctive name and a unique backdrop of aviation activity. This makes it a easily recognizable and accessible destination for residents of South Minneapolis and those traveling from other parts of the metro area.

Accessibility to the park is generally straightforward, largely due to its setting in a less densely populated area compared to central city parks. While specific parking details aren't explicitly provided in the reviews beyond its general "convenience," such a large park typically implies ample space for vehicles. Public dog parks are usually designed with user accessibility in mind, often offering on-site or nearby street parking. Its proximity to major roadways leading to and from the airport also contributes to its ease of access for drivers.

It's important to note for new visitors that while the park is "huge," a key detail is that it is "not completely fenced in." This means dogs using the park should have excellent recall and be responsive to voice commands, especially given the proximity to potentially distracting elements like the airport and other natural areas. This characteristic influences the type of dog and owner that will find this park most suitable, highlighting the need for responsible pet ownership practices.

Promotions or Special Offers

Airport Dog Park 1 operates under unique management, as the land is owned by the Metropolitan Airport Commission (MAC) rather than the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. This means it has different access requirements compared to most city-managed dog parks in Minneapolis.

Crucially, as per available public information:

  • No Permit Required: Unlike most Minneapolis city dog parks, "No permit is required" to use Airport Dog Park 1. This is a significant "special offer" as it removes the typical annual or daily permit fees, making it a free-to-access off-leash area for dog owners.
  • Free Admission: There is no direct entrance fee to access the park.
  • Directly Managed by Metropolitan Airport Commission: The fact that it's "not managed by the city" (Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board) means different rules and amenities apply, most notably the lack of a permit requirement.

Therefore, the primary "promotion" or "special offer" of Airport Dog Park 1 is its status as a free, open-access off-leash park. This makes it an incredibly cost-effective option for consistent dog exercise and socialization, offering immense value to local dog owners seeking an expansive play area without the recurring permit fees associated with other regional dog parks.

Conclusion: Why Airport Dog Park 1 is Suitable for Locals

For dog owners in Minnesota, particularly those in the Minneapolis area, Airport Dog Park 1 presents a compelling and highly suitable option for off-leash recreation, offering a unique experience that sets it apart from other local dog parks. Its distinct characteristics cater well to specific needs within the canine community.

The foremost reason for its suitability is its colossal size. Described as "huge," this park provides an immense open space where dogs can truly run at full speed, explore vast areas, and burn off significant energy. This is invaluable for high-energy breeds and dogs who thrive on unrestricted movement, offering a level of freedom not found in many urban dog parks. The varied terrain, including "wooded paths" and "lots of trees," further enhances the experience, providing diverse sensory stimulation and opportunities for natural exploration.

The presence of a "marsh if your dog likes to get wet" is another unique highlight. For water-loving dogs, this natural feature offers an exciting dimension to playtime, allowing them to cool off and indulge their aquatic instincts. While it means owners should "Bring a towel because your pup will get wet and dirty!", the sheer joy their dogs experience makes it a worthwhile trade-off for many.

A significant advantage for locals is that "No permit is required" to use this park, setting it apart from Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board-managed sites that often require an annual fee. This makes it an incredibly accessible and cost-effective option for regular visits. The consistent presence of "several dogs no matter the day or time" also ensures ample socialization opportunities, fostering a vibrant and active canine community.

However, locals should be mindful that "It is not completely fenced in" and there are "no garbage" receptacles, requiring them to "carry out your poo bags and bring home." These aspects necessitate responsible dog ownership, including excellent recall training. For those prepared for these considerations, Airport Dog Park 1 offers an unparalleled, expansive, and natural off-leash adventure right here in Minneapolis, making it a beloved choice for adventurous pups and their devoted owners.

It’s by far the best dog park! It’s huge! There are wooded paths, lots of trees and lots of benches. There’s a marsh if your dog likes to get wet, and has a beautiful view at sunset. My dog likes this park the best by far! There are always several dogs no matter the day or time ! Lovely place ☺️

Our pups love this place! The grounds are spacious and offer a variety of areas to explore. There are open fields for throwing discs and balls, a few stands of trees for marking and shade, and a wetland area that is best explored in the winter. The outer gravel trail is a mile loop with a shorter inner trail. There are various benches around and community water bowls. So far, we've only had great experiences with other dogs and their owners. One of our pups is rather shy but fast, and his confidence has improved as he has plenty of space to bolt when he's overwhelmed. Our littlest pup is the opposite and loves to get in the thick of the action with other playful pups, regardless of size. It's truly a great place to socialize non aggressive dogs! Tips: I highly recommend filling up a gallon jug or similar with water to contribute to filling the bowls as there isn't an on-site water source. Also, you haul your own used poop bags. There are no trash cans on site.

Great find and one we almost missed. Took our girls (Nova and Birdie) with us for a weekend jaunt to Minneapolis and we knew that we would need to visit a few dog parks to get their zoomies out. After hearing from a local resident that we should check this one out we are happy that we did! This is an off leash park with lots of dogs (all well behaved in our experience). There is a portion that is not fenced near the road facing the airport but it is mostly fenced. Nova (our 1 year old) can be a bit squirrely at times and I tend to not bring her to unfenced parks when letting her off leash but this was not at all an issue for us as we just steered clear of that side. The girls had fun and we had a nice walk. There was a swampy area with water that we also avoided but there were dogs enjoying a dip as well. Overall, I give this one a big thumbs up - we'll be back. *one thing to plan ahead for is that there is no place to dispose of poop bags at this park as it is not maintained by the City/County like most parks are.

This place has the best views for any aircraft enthusiasts out there! This is the only place where you can see arrivals and departures from all 3 runways at MSP.
