Welcome to Lilydale Off-Leash Dog Park
For dog owners in the greater St. Paul area, the search for the ideal spot where our four-legged friends can run freely, socialize, and explore is a constant pursuit. Amidst the urban landscape, Lilydale Off-Leash Dog Park emerges as a truly remarkable destination, offering a unique blend of expansive natural beauty and thoughtfully designed amenities for canine recreation. Located within the scenic Lilydale Regional Park, this off-leash haven provides a breath of fresh air for both pups and their human companions.
Unlike some smaller city parks, Lilydale offers a vast landscape, promising ample room for energetic dogs to stretch their legs and engage in spirited play. Its setting along the Mississippi River adds a picturesque dimension to every visit, making it more than just a dog park—it's a scenic retreat. This article will guide you through everything you need to know about Lilydale Off-Leash Dog Park, from its convenient location and diverse features to the services it provides, showcasing why it has become a cherished spot for dog lovers across the Twin Cities.
Lilydale Off-Leash Dog Park is beautifully situated within Lilydale Regional Park, a significant natural area along the Mississippi River in St. Paul, Minnesota. The park's address is 1700 Lilydale Rd, St Paul, MN 55118, USA. This location places it conveniently accessible from various parts of St. Paul and even Minneapolis, particularly for those who don't mind a short, scenic drive.
Accessing the dog park involves a journey through Lilydale Regional Park itself. As noted by reviewers, the park is reached by following a "beautiful winding road down to the River basin." Google Maps is generally reliable for navigation to the area. Once in the basin, visitors should "continue past and follow the basin road for a bit." The turn into the parking lot for the dog park has been described as "a bit obscure" and sometimes resembling "a service road" with potholes. However, this road leads directly to the designated parking area for the dog park, specifically the boat launch parking lot, which is where visitors traveling by car should aim to park.
The park benefits from "two entrances" for the dog park itself, ensuring good flow. While the journey in adds to the sense of a natural escape, it's important to be aware of these navigational cues. The overall accessibility makes it a worthwhile destination for those seeking a larger, more natural off-leash experience. Lilydale Regional Park, including the dog park, is generally open from sunrise to 10:00 p.m., unless otherwise posted, offering extensive hours for visitors.
Lilydale Off-Leash Dog Park provides a comprehensive range of services and amenities designed to create a safe, engaging, and enjoyable environment for both dogs and their owners. These services are consistent with a well-managed public park of its size and scope.
- Expansive Fenced Off-Leash Area: The park boasts an impressive approximately 8.5 acres of fully fenced space dedicated to off-leash dog play. This substantial size allows dogs plenty of room to run, sprint, and explore freely without concern of straying.
- Dedicated Small Dog Area: A significant and much-appreciated feature is the "separate smaller area for folks that prefer dogs in sight," specifically a 3/4-acre fenced area designated for small dogs (similar to the High Bridge dog park in St. Paul). This provides a safe and comfortable space for smaller breeds or more timid dogs to play away from larger, more boisterous canines.
- Dog Waste Bag Dispensers: To ensure cleanliness and promote responsible pet ownership, dog waste bag dispensers are typically available throughout the park, making it convenient for owners to clean up after their dogs.
- Waste Receptacles: Complementing the waste bags, sufficient garbage cans are provided for the proper disposal of dog waste, contributing to a pleasant and hygienic environment for all users.
- Variety of Trails: The park features "various trails weaving through woods and tall grass," including one that "goes along a fence line and the river while others wind through the middle of the park." This diverse trail system allows for varied walking experiences for owners and exploration opportunities for dogs.
- Scenic River Proximity: While the river is on one side of a gated fence, the park's proximity offers beautiful views and a natural, serene backdrop to dog play.
It is important to note that a St. Paul Off-Leash Dog Park permit is required for use of Lilydale Dog Park, and dogs must be licensed and vaccinated. Owners are also expected to provide their own water for their dogs.
Lilydale Off-Leash Dog Park stands out as a premier dog park in the Twin Cities metro due to several distinctive features and highlights that enhance the experience for both canine and human visitors.
- Expansive Size and Fencing: At approximately 8.5 acres and fully fenced, Lilydale offers a vast and secure environment for off-leash play. This is a significant advantage over smaller or partially fenced parks, giving dogs ample room to run and explore without owners constantly worrying about them wandering off.
- Dedicated Small Dog Area: The inclusion of a separate 3/4-acre fenced area specifically for small dogs is a major highlight. This thoughtful design caters to the needs of smaller breeds and more cautious dogs, allowing them to socialize comfortably and safely away from larger, more energetic play.
- Diverse Natural Terrain and Trails: The park's landscape includes "various trails weaving through woods and tall grass." This natural diversity provides engaging exploration opportunities for dogs, stimulating their senses and offering varied exercise experiences beyond a simple open field. One trail runs along the fence line and the river, while others wind through the park's interior.
- Scenic River Basin Location: The park's setting within the Lilydale Regional Park, nestled down in the Mississippi River basin, offers "beautiful winding roads" and proximity to the river. While the dog park is gated from the river, the views and the journey to the park itself contribute to a unique and pleasant outing.
- Welcoming for Nervous Explorers: As noted by a reviewer, Lilydale is considered a "nice midway point to get cozy with the idea of letting their floofs off leash for some good ol' doggo socializing" for those "friends who are nervous to explore Battle Creek." This suggests a generally friendly and accommodating atmosphere for newcomers or less experienced dogs and owners.
- Community Hub: The park serves as a hub for dog owners to connect and socialize. The shared experience of a large, well-maintained space fosters a sense of community among regular visitors.
The commitment to providing a secure and varied environment makes Lilydale an exceptional choice for a wide range of dogs and their owners.
As a public off-leash dog park managed by the City of St. Paul Parks and Recreation, Lilydale Off-Leash Dog Park does not typically offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the retail sense. Its value proposition for local users comes primarily through its permit system and the quality of the public amenity it provides.
- Required St. Paul Off-Leash Dog Park Permit: To use Lilydale Dog Park, visitors are required to purchase an annual St. Paul Off-Leash Dog Park permit. This permit grants access to all designated off-leash dog parks within the city of St. Paul. While there's a fee for this permit, it functions as an affordable "offer" for year-round access to multiple high-quality dog parks. Permit fees generally help fund the maintenance, amenities, and upkeep of these valuable public spaces.
- Daily Permits Available: For those who are not regular visitors or are just trying out the park, daily permits may also be available, providing a flexible option to experience the park without committing to an annual pass.
- Year-Round Access: The park is generally open from sunrise to 10:00 p.m. daily, offering extensive hours and year-round accessibility (subject to weather or maintenance closures). This consistent availability is a significant "offer" for locals, allowing for flexible visit times.
- Free Access to Nature and Socialization: The inherent "special offer" of Lilydale is the free access to an expansive, diverse, and well-maintained natural environment for dogs to play and socialize. The dedicated small dog area also offers a tailored experience for specific needs without additional cost beyond the permit.

Lilydale Off-Leash Dog Park is exceptionally suitable for dog owners in St. Paul and surrounding Minnesota communities, offering a comprehensive and high-quality experience that addresses many of the common desires for canine recreation. Its combination of vast space, thoughtful features, and natural beauty makes it a standout destination.
Firstly, the sheer size of the park – approximately 8.5 acres of fully fenced space – is a significant draw. This expansive area allows dogs of all sizes to truly run at full speed, play vigorously, and burn off energy in a way that smaller, more confined parks simply cannot accommodate. This is crucial for their physical health and behavioral well-being, providing an essential outlet for their natural instincts. Secondly, the inclusion of a dedicated 3/4-acre small dog area is a testament to the park's commitment to catering to diverse canine needs. This separate space ensures that smaller or more timid dogs can socialize and play comfortably without being overwhelmed by larger, more boisterous canines, fostering a safer and more enjoyable experience for all.
Finally, the park's natural setting within Lilydale Regional Park, with its winding roads, beautiful foliage, and proximity to the Mississippi River, elevates the experience beyond just a place to let dogs run. It becomes a destination for a pleasant outing, allowing humans to enjoy the scenic beauty while their dogs are engaged. The diverse terrain, including wooded areas and trails, provides varied sniffing opportunities and enrichment. For St. Paul locals seeking a spacious, secure, inclusive, and naturally beautiful environment for their dogs to thrive and socialize, Lilydale Off-Leash Dog Park offers an unparalleled and highly cherished recreational opportunity.

Great park with lots of space for dogs to run. The river is on one side of a gated fence. There are two entrances.
Apr 20, 2025 · Stephanie ValenciaThe Lilydale Dog park follows a beautiful winding road down to the River basin. In my experience, Google Maps does well to get me there. Our pups love the journey. We follow a road lined with, at the time of this review, gorgeous fall foliage. At the bottom, a yacht club lingering on the banks rests ahead. Continue past it and follow the basin road for a bit. I found the turn into the parking lot a bit obscure. It is a well-potholed road that looks like it may be a service road. However, it leads to a lovely small dog park. Many friends who are nervous to explore Battle Creek in Woodbury find Lilydale a nice midway point to get cozy with the idea of letting their floofs off leash for some good ol' doggo socializing, especially because there is a separate smaller area for folks that prefer dogs in sight 😊
Oct 21, 2023 · Laura FarvourDecently big park. Has a small dog area. No water access unless you leave the gated area. Garbages only at the two entrances. It is lovely but the middle is hard to walk through since trails aren't well established yet.
Nov 20, 2022 · Alicia LaBrosseI saw on Facebook that this park had just opened, so I took a dog to go check it out! It's a great park, and very wild. TONS of places to sniff and explore if you've got an active dog. There is a lot of waist deep foliage here, so make sure you and your dogs are ready for ticks. I had a couple minor complaints: There was only one water dish, at the entrance There are no trash cans in the area, just at the entrance. We are SO close to the river, and there's no water access. Still, great park and we'll definitely be back. It might be my second favorite dog park. Bring water and bug spray.
Jul 12, 2022 · Casey CameronVery nice medium-size dog park with trails and a few open play areas. No water access, but there is a gate that exits out toward the river. It seems to be at about the middle of Lilydale regional park, so if you park at one end or the other it’s about a mile walk in. There is parking close to the dog park too, but the additional walk is nice!
