Our pooch had the best time! It was nice to have an area where he can play and swim off-leash! Everyone in the area was friendly and understanding of this being a dog area. This space is not fenced, so you still need to have an eye on your dog.

Welcome to Devil's Lake Pet Swim Area
For dog owners across Wisconsin, Devil's Lake State Park is already a well-known natural wonder, offering stunning bluffs, clear waters, and miles of trails. But for those with canine companions eager to cool off and play in the water, the Devil's Lake Pet Swim Area provides an invaluable and unique opportunity. This designated zone allows your furry friend to enjoy the lake off-leash, a rare treat within a state park setting. It’s a dedicated space where dogs can truly revel in the freedom of splashing, swimming, and interacting with other friendly pups, all against the backdrop of one of Wisconsin's most iconic landscapes.
The Devil's Lake Pet Swim Area isn't a traditional fenced "dog park" in the urban sense, but rather a specially designated section of the lakefront where pets are welcome to swim and play off-leash. This natural, open environment provides an authentic outdoor experience, allowing dogs to enjoy the water as nature intended. Reviews from delighted dog owners consistently highlight the joy their pooches experience, emphasizing the friendly atmosphere among both dogs and their humans. While the area is not fenced, it offers ample space for dogs to play, making it a favorite for those seeking a more natural and expansive setting for their pets' aquatic adventures. For Wisconsin locals who love to explore the outdoors with their dogs, this specific swim area is a must-visit, combining the beauty of Devil's Lake with the freedom of off-leash water play.
The Devil's Lake Pet Swim Area is primarily located at the South Shore boat landing, with its address often listed as C766+R8, S Lake Rd, Baraboo, WI 53913, USA. Devil's Lake State Park is renowned for its easy accessibility from major roadways, drawing visitors from across Wisconsin and beyond. The South Shore area is a popular entry point to the park, typically well-signed and easy to navigate to.
The park itself operates from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM daily, year-round, offering extensive hours for visitors. Ample parking is available at the South Shore, though on peak summer weekends, the park can become very busy, and parking lots may fill up. It’s always advisable to arrive early during popular times or consider visiting on weekdays for a more relaxed experience. To access the Devil's Lake Pet Swim Area, a Wisconsin State Parks vehicle admission sticker is required for your vehicle. This can be purchased as an annual pass or a daily pass at the park's entry stations or self-registration kiosks. While pets are welcome in most areas of Devil's Lake State Park, they must generally be on an 8-foot leash, except within designated off-leash areas like this pet swim spot. This combination of straightforward access and clear park regulations ensures a smooth visit for all.
As a designated area within a larger state park, the Devil's Lake Pet Swim Area offers specific services geared towards pet owners, while benefiting from the broader amenities of Devil's Lake State Park:
Off-Leash Water Access: The primary service is providing a unique space where dogs are permitted to swim and play in Devil's Lake off-leash. This is a rare and highly valued offering.
Waterfront Entry: Direct access to the lake's edge, allowing dogs easy entry into the water.
Open Natural Space: While not a fenced "park," the surrounding area typically provides natural open space for dogs to move around on shore before entering the water.
Waste Disposal: Visitors are responsible for picking up after their pets and disposing of waste properly in designated trash receptacles throughout the state park. While specific pet waste stations with bags might not be directly at the swim area, they are usually found within the main park facilities.
Parking: Ample parking is available in the South Shore area, convenient to the pet swim area.
It's important for visitors to come prepared with their own dog waste bags, water, and bowls, as specific amenities directly at the pet swim spot may be limited beyond the natural environment.
The Devil's Lake Pet Swim Area is celebrated for its natural features and the unique experience it offers to dogs and their owners:
Off-Leash Swimming: This is the standout feature. Unlike most areas of Devil's Lake State Park where dogs must be leashed, this specific area allows for off-leash play and swimming, providing true freedom for water-loving dogs.
Scenic Beauty: The pet swim area is situated within the breathtaking Devil's Lake State Park, offering stunning views of the surrounding bluffs and clear lake waters. It's a picturesque setting for your dog's playtime.
Friendly Atmosphere: Reviewers consistently note the friendly and understanding nature of other dog owners in the area, creating a positive social environment for both pets and people.
Natural Environment: Unlike highly manicured dog parks, this area embraces a natural, open landscape, allowing dogs to explore a more wild setting. While not fenced, this contributes to its natural charm.
Access to Broader Park Amenities: After enjoying the pet swim area, visitors can explore other pet-friendly parts of Devil's Lake State Park, including many miles of hiking trails where leashed dogs are welcome, and designated pet-friendly picnic areas.
Opportunities for Canine Exercise: The ability to swim and play off-leash provides an excellent outlet for dogs to expend energy, promoting their physical and mental health.
It is crucial to note that because the area is not fenced, owners must maintain a close eye and voice control over their dogs at all times to ensure their safety and the enjoyment of other park visitors.
As a designated area within a Wisconsin State Park, the Devil's Lake Pet Swim Area does not offer traditional commercial "promotions" or "special offers." However, the primary cost associated with visiting is the Wisconsin State Parks vehicle admission sticker, which itself offers great value for Wisconsin residents:
Annual State Parks Pass: For frequent visitors to Devil's Lake or any other Wisconsin State Park, purchasing an annual vehicle admission sticker is the most economical option. For Wisconsin residents, this is significantly discounted compared to out-of-state visitors. This pass provides unlimited access to all Wisconsin State Parks, Forests, and Trails for an entire year, effectively acting as an incredible value for outdoor enthusiasts with dogs.
Daily Pass Option: For those planning a single visit or infrequent trips, daily vehicle admission passes are available at a lower cost. This flexibility makes the park accessible for spontaneous outings.
Reciprocal Benefits: While not a "promotion," it's worth noting that the State Park system offers consistent rules and amenities across its properties. Your sticker applies statewide, making it easy to discover other pet-friendly areas across Wisconsin's beautiful park system.
The "value" lies in the access to a well-maintained, naturally beautiful, and incredibly diverse outdoor environment for a relatively low annual fee. For current pricing on daily and annual vehicle admission stickers, it is always best to consult the official Wisconsin DNR website or inquire at the park entrance.

Jun 13, 2023 · Taylor SakinskyI have yet to encounter an aggressive dog! I love that in the designated pet swim areas your pets can be off leash!
Jul 21, 2019 · Bekka FahleySmall area, no poop bags, but a lot of fun though
Sep 17, 2022 · Catalina AraujoOur puppy had a wonderful time here! He loved the water and being around other dogs and dog people made for a much more enjoyable day at the beach. My only criticism is that there didn’t appear to be any enforcement of the dog on leash policy. There were many people with their dogs off lead, which was difficult for us with our 4 month old puppy.
Jun 12, 2018 · Carmen WSmall beach off the side of the road, the beach isn't that impressive, but the view is breathtaking and we were excited they even had an area that allowed dogs! So cool. Use this area to cool down after a nice hike with your dogs and it's well worth a stop!
