I’ve driven by this park countless times and finally got to experience it!! At the time we went there was construction happening on the road. There are NO fences. Truly an off leash experience. Lots of land, some trails to follow, and bags at the start along with a porta-loo. Three other pairs showed up during a quick 30 minute stay - it was super windy and super cold until we found shelter behind the trees to the right of the pond.

Welcome to Indian Lake Dog Park
For dog owners across Wisconsin, the quest for the perfect place where their canine companions can truly stretch their legs and embrace their natural instincts is a common one. In Cross Plains, nestled within the expansive Indian Lake County Park, lies Indian Lake Dog Park – a unique and often-praised destination that offers a distinctive off-leash experience. Unlike many urban dog parks with traditional fencing, Indian Lake Dog Park provides a more open, natural environment for dogs to explore. This article is crafted specifically for Wisconsin locals, offering a comprehensive look at what makes Indian Lake Dog Park a compelling choice for those seeking a vast, natural playground for their furry friends. We'll delve into its serene location, available amenities, special features, and what you need to know to make your visit enjoyable and safe.
Indian Lake Dog Park is not your typical, tightly confined dog run. Instead, it’s a sprawling, approximately 38-acre unfenced off-leash dog exercise area located within the much larger 791-acre Indian Lake County Park. This vastness is its defining characteristic, offering ample space for dogs to run freely, chase balls, and explore maintained paths through open fields and longer grass. The philosophy here leans towards a "truly off-leash experience," where dogs with reliable recall can roam and interact within a more natural setting. This expansive, open nature can be a breath of fresh air for dogs who feel restricted in smaller, fenced areas. While it means owners must be extra vigilant about their dog’s behavior and recall, it also allows for a different kind of freedom and adventure. It's a place where you can enjoy the natural beauty of Dane County alongside your happy, exercised dog, making it a valuable part of the Wisconsin dog park landscape.
Indian Lake Dog Park is situated at 8382 WI-19, Cross Plains, WI 53528, USA. This address places it within Indian Lake County Park, a significant natural preserve in Dane County, just a short drive west of Madison. The park’s location on State Highway 19 makes it relatively easy to access for residents from Cross Plains, Madison, and other surrounding communities.
Access to the dog park specifically is from the parking lot at the west entrance of Indian Lake County Park, adjacent to the small boat launch. While there might be ongoing road construction at times, as noted in a review, the park itself remains accessible. The ample parking at the west entrance caters to visitors, ensuring convenience upon arrival. Given its rural setting, public transportation options might be limited, so driving is generally the most practical way to reach the park. For those who appreciate scenic drives and are looking for a natural escape, the journey to Indian Lake Dog Park adds to the overall experience, immersing you in Wisconsin's beautiful countryside before you even arrive at the off-leash area.
As a large, natural off-leash area within a county park, Indian Lake Dog Park provides essential services focused on facilitating a comfortable and responsible experience for dog owners.
Unfenced Off-Leash Area: A vast, designated 38-acre space where dogs can roam freely without a leash, ideal for high-energy dogs with good recall.
Dog Waste Bags and Trash Cans: Available at the start of the dog park area, encouraging responsible cleanup by owners.
Porta-Loo: A portable restroom facility is provided near the dog park entrance, offering a basic amenity for human visitors.
Maintained Paths/Trails: Trails are cut through the longer grass, providing clear routes for walking and exploration within the open field area.
Access to Indian Lake: The dog park is located near the small boat launch, allowing for potential water access for dogs, though visitors should exercise caution and be aware of regulations regarding swimming or water entry for pets.
Dog Permit Required: As part of the Dane County Parks system, a valid Dane County Dog Park permit (annual or daily) is required for use of the off-leash area. Users also need a municipal dog license.
Indian Lake Dog Park stands out with several unique features and highlights that distinguish it from other dog parks in the Wisconsin area.
Expansive Open Space: With 38 acres, it offers significantly more room for dogs to run and play than most urban dog parks, making it perfect for breeds that need extensive exercise.
Natural Environment: The park provides a rustic, natural setting with open fields, some wooded areas on the outskirts, and access to a pond/lake, creating a diverse landscape for dogs to explore.
Scenic Views: Located within Indian Lake County Park, visitors can enjoy picturesque views of the lake and surrounding Wisconsin countryside, enhancing the experience for owners as well as dogs.
Trail System: Maintained paths within the dog park and access to the broader park's extensive trail system allow for longer walks and varied exploration, beyond just an open field.
Sense of Solitude: Due to its size and unfenced nature, it’s often less busy than smaller, fenced parks, providing a quieter, more relaxed experience, especially during off-peak hours.
Part of a Larger Park: Being within Indian Lake County Park means visitors can combine a dog park visit with other recreational activities offered in the wider park, such as hiking the Ice Age National Scenic Trail or visiting the historic chapel (while keeping dogs on leash outside the designated off-leash area).
As a public county park amenity within Dane County, Indian Lake Dog Park does not offer traditional commercial "promotions or special offers" in the same way a retail business might. Its "offer" is its accessibility and the unique natural experience it provides.
However, it's important to note that a valid Dane County Dog Park permit is required for use. These permits can be purchased annually or as single-day passes. While the park itself doesn't offer promotions, the Dane County Parks system occasionally runs promotions on their annual permits or provides information on where to purchase them conveniently. For instance, annual permits might be available online or at electronic pay stations located at various Dane County Parks, including Indian Lake.
The true value or "special offer" of Indian Lake Dog Park lies in its consistent availability as a sprawling natural space for canine exercise and enjoyment, which is provided at a reasonable permit fee designed to support the maintenance of the park system. For the most up-to-date information on permit fees and purchase options, visitors should always refer to the official Dane County Parks website.

Indian Lake Dog Park is exceptionally suitable for locals in the Wisconsin region, particularly those in Dane County, due to its unique characteristics that cater to specific needs of dog owners. For starters, its sheer size – a sprawling 38 acres – is a major draw. This vastness allows dogs to truly run, explore, and get extensive exercise in a way that smaller, urban fenced parks simply cannot accommodate. This is perfect for high-energy breeds or dogs who thrive with ample space. The natural, unfenced environment, while requiring owners to have strong recall skills for their dogs, provides a liberating experience, allowing dogs to engage with nature in a more authentic way, following trails and exploring open fields.
Furthermore, its integration into the larger Indian Lake County Park means that it offers more than just a dog park; it's an opportunity for a broader outdoor experience. Locals can combine a dog park visit with hiking the park's extensive trails (keeping dogs leashed outside the off-leash area), enjoying scenic views, or even visiting the historic chapel. This multi-faceted recreational opportunity makes it a destination for the whole family, including the furry members. The presence of essential amenities like waste bags and a porta-loo ensures basic needs are met, contributing to a clean and user-friendly environment. While some might prefer a fenced area, for Wisconsin locals whose dogs are well-socialized and responsive to commands, Indian Lake Dog Park offers an unparalleled sense of freedom and a truly natural setting that is hard to find elsewhere, making it a cherished asset for the community.

Apr 02, 2024 · Frances CarrollUsually not very busy, maintained paths and access to the lake. The park has no trees, except for on the outskirts, and is basically an open field with trails cut through the longer grass. There’s no “fence” so if your dog has a tendency of running away, I would choose another dog park to visit. Overall, a nice option!
Dec 30, 2021 · Alexa MarsicekGreat park, never crowded. I tend to stay in the back section, the front section faces the road and has no fence. They have access to the lake if they get hot. Great in winter as well. Totally worth it.
Jun 12, 2023 · Mercedes Rivera-MartinThis is not your typical fenced in dog park. It is just a big open space on the edge of the county park that you can let your pet off leash in. I would not recommend it unless your dog has very good recall. There is some water access to the small lake/pond.
