Nice dog park right off 95 and easy to access with good signage. There are 2 parks. Not designated “large” or “small” dogs so I guess you could accommodate whatever. Some shade. In one of the parks there’s a bit of a gap in the gate that larger dogs couldn’t get through but my dachshund certainly could so be careful. This gate opens to a grassy area that fronts 95. Look at this carefully before you let your dog loose. Otherwise it’s a great dog park!!!

Welcome to Benson Dog Park
For dog owners navigating the vast landscapes of North Carolina, whether residents looking for a local play spot or travelers passing through on I-95, finding a convenient and safe place for their canine companions to stretch their legs is a top priority. In the charming town of Benson, Johnston County, one particular spot stands out as a genuine "hidden gem": the Benson Dog Park. This isn't just another patch of grass; it’s a thoughtfully positioned and highly accessible facility that caters to the needs of playful pups and their human escorts.
The Benson Dog Park serves as a crucial respite, especially for those embarking on long road trips. It provides a much-needed opportunity for dogs to run off-leash, burn off pent-up energy, and engage in healthy play in a secure environment. For local residents, it offers a consistent and well-maintained outdoor space for daily exercise and socialization. The park’s strategic location, combined with its welcoming amenities, makes it a highly valued resource, ensuring that every dog, from the energetic large breeds to the more cautious small ones, can enjoy a moment of uninhibited freedom.
The Benson Dog Park is located in Benson, NC, with its primary access address noted simply as Benson, NC 27504, USA. However, more precise information indicates it is located at 100 Water Place Landing, Benson, NC 27504. This specific location is a significant highlight, as it is situated directly off I-95 (specifically near Exit 79), making it incredibly easy to access for both local residents and travelers. Reviewers consistently praise its "easy to access" nature and "good signage," making it a hassle-free stop during a road trip or a quick local visit. It's also conveniently located near gas stations and food establishments, adding to its appeal as a practical stop.
The park operates from dawn to dusk daily, offering broad availability for visitors. Parking is typically ample and convenient due to its purpose as a travel-friendly stop. While the park is located near I-95, users are advised to be mindful of its proximity to the highway, especially when entering or exiting the areas, and to supervise their dogs closely. Some older reviews mention a potential gap in a gate that might concern owners of very small dogs; however, the most current information indicates separate fenced areas for small and large dogs, which would mitigate this concern. Always use caution and observe the fencing upon arrival.
The Benson Dog Park provides essential services and facilities designed to enhance the off-leash experience for dogs and their owners:
Two Fenced Play Areas: The park features two distinct, securely fenced sections. While some reviews suggest they are "not designated 'large' or 'small' dogs," more recent information from official sources (like Johnston County Visitors Bureau and BringFido) confirms that there are indeed "separate fenced in areas for small dogs under 25 pounds, and large dogs over 25 pounds." This dedicated separation helps ensure safer play among dogs of similar size and energy levels.
Dog Water Fountain/Bowls: To keep active pups hydrated, the park is equipped with water fountains or bowls, ensuring fresh drinking water is available for thirsty canines, a crucial amenity especially during North Carolina's warmer months.
Pet Waste Stations: The park provides waste bag stations and trash receptacles, encouraging responsible pet ownership and facilitating easy cleanup to maintain the park's cleanliness.
Some Shaded Areas: While not entirely shaded, the park offers "some shade" from trees, providing welcome relief from the sun for both dogs and their owners.
Easy Access for Travelers: One of its primary "services" is its strategic location right off I-95, serving as an ideal stop for dog owners on road trips to allow their pets to relieve themselves and burn off energy.
The Benson Dog Park's most notable features and highlights contribute to its popularity, especially among travelers and locals alike:
Direct I-95 Accessibility: Its location "right off 95" is a significant highlight, making it an incredibly convenient stop for those traveling the East Coast corridor. This ease of access ensures minimal detours for quick and effective dog breaks.
Dedicated Small and Large Dog Areas: The confirmed presence of two separate, fenced areas, one for "small dogs under 25 pounds" and another for "large dogs over 25 pounds," is a key feature. This separation allows for more comfortable and safer play tailored to different canine sizes and temperaments, reducing anxiety for owners.
Cleanliness and Maintenance: Reviews consistently praise the park for being "clean," "well-maintained," and having "grass was mowed." This level of upkeep ensures a pleasant and hygienic environment for all users.
Essential Amenities Provided: The availability of a water fountain/bowls and free dog waste bags demonstrates the park's commitment to providing necessary amenities for a responsible and enjoyable visit.
Nearby Conveniences: Its proximity to gas stations, food establishments (including a burger spot with outdoor seating), and even pet-friendly hotels (like Hampton Inn Benson) adds to its overall appeal, making it a comprehensive stop for both human and canine needs.
Natural Green Space: The park offers a good amount of grassy area for dogs to run and play, which is appreciated by users seeking an open space for their pets.
As a public amenity provided by the Town of Benson or Johnston County, Benson Dog Park does not typically offer traditional "promotions" or "special offers" in the commercial sense. Access to the park is generally free and open to the public, making it an accessible and valuable resource for the community and travelers.
Free Public Access: The primary "offer" is that the park is freely accessible to all dog owners and their pets, without any registration fees or entry charges. This makes it an ideal, cost-effective solution for a quick break or regular exercise.
Traveler-Friendly Location: For those on road trips, the park itself is a significant "special offer." It provides a much-needed, convenient, and safe off-leash area directly off a major highway, saving travelers time and stress compared to searching for alternative options.
Proximity to Pet-Friendly Accommodations: The availability of pet-friendly hotels nearby (such as the Hampton Inn Benson, which some reviews note offers free treats and toys for dogs) can be considered an indirect "offer" that enhances the overall convenience for traveling pet owners. This integrated offering simplifies travel planning for dog owners.
While there are no financial promotions, the consistent provision of a clean, maintained, and well-equipped dog park is the ongoing "value offer" from the local municipality. Visitors are encouraged to respect park rules and help maintain its cleanliness to ensure continued enjoyment for everyone.

For dog owners in North Carolina, especially those in Benson and the surrounding Johnston County area, as well as travelers passing through, the Benson Dog Park stands out as an exceptionally suitable and practical local resource. Its primary appeal stems from its unparalleled convenience and strategic location directly off I-95. This makes it an ideal spot not only for daily exercise for local pups but also a critical pit stop for dogs needing to stretch their legs and relieve themselves during long road trips. This dual utility enhances its value significantly for a broad range of users.
The thoughtful design of the park, featuring two separate, securely fenced areas for large and small dogs, is a major advantage. This segregation allows for safer and more enjoyable play, as dogs can interact with companions of similar size and energy levels, reducing potential stress and conflicts. The presence of essential amenities like water fountains/bowls and easily accessible waste bag stations further enhances the user experience, promoting responsible pet ownership and contributing to the park's consistent cleanliness. Reviewers consistently praise its well-maintained grounds, which indicates a dedication to providing a high-quality environment. For locals, it’s a reliable and pleasant place for regular dog outings, fostering a sense of community among pet parents. For travelers, it’s a much-needed, stress-free oasis that integrates seamlessly into a journey, allowing dogs to decompress before getting back on the road. In essence, Benson Dog Park is a testament to community planning that genuinely caters to the needs of both its resident and transient canine populations, making it an invaluable asset in North Carolina.

Jun 13, 2025 · Julie PiersonIt's a perfect getaway for our dog. I hate stopping on a road trip for gas and our dog has no where to do his business. This little hidden gem was right off the highway and had food and gas right around the corner. Leo was able to run around off leash to burn off some energy then we easily got back on the road.
May 18, 2025 · Jackie BondGreat stop off of I-95 to walk your dog. Great parking, fence, benches, and water fountain. Clean and has doggie bags and trash cans.
Feb 02, 2024 · Sherri BarhamMake sure to try out Gabriella’s afterward for some great Peruvian food.
Jun 01, 2025 · Clayton PhillipsRight off the highway, this was a great place for us to stop and let the dogs stretch their legs. Two separate parks - one for large dogs and one for small dogs. It was well stocked - fresh water and dog bags. Only wish it had a human bathroom on site as well since it is advertised as a stop along the highway on billboards.
