Muddy but still nice for our 1st dog park with our new rescue. I didn't know we had to be registered with the town first so unfortunately that will be our last visit but I will say he had a blast and was good and tired when he climbed into the car.

The Waggertail Dog Park stands out as a highly valued local amenity, offering a significant area where pups can enjoy off-leash adventures and make new friends. This park is more than just a place to let your dog stretch its legs; it's a testament to a community that understands the importance of providing dedicated recreational spaces for our beloved pets.

Waggertail Dog Park provides a much-needed outlet for the energetic dogs of Riverdale and surrounding Maryland towns. While some reviews mention its propensity for mud, this is often a small trade-off for the sheer size and natural feel of the park, which many dogs thoroughly enjoy. It's a place where puppies can have their first exciting dog park experiences and seasoned seniors can enjoy a leisurely sniff. The park's emphasis on responsible pet ownership and community spirit makes it a truly local gem.

Location and Accessibility

Waggertail Dog Park is conveniently located at 6599 51st Ave, Riverdale, MD 20737, USA. This address places it within the heart of Riverdale, making it easily accessible for residents throughout Prince George's County and nearby areas of Maryland. The park is nestled at the end of 51st Avenue, near a large baseball field and tennis courts within Riverdale Community Recreation Park, indicating it's part of a broader recreational complex.

Accessing the park by car is straightforward, with parking typically available in the vicinity of Riverdale Community Recreation Park. For those utilizing public transportation, Riverdale is served by local bus routes, offering connections that can bring visitors within a reasonable distance of the park.

Important Note for Maryland Residents: To use Waggertail Dog Park, all dog owners must register their dogs with the Town of Riverdale Park Municipal Offices. This registration typically requires proof of residency in Prince George's County and your dog's current Prince George's County dog license. A permit tag must be displayed on your dog's collar while in the park, and the permit expires annually on July 1. This registration process helps the town manage the park and encourages responsible pet ownership within the community. The park is generally open from dawn to dusk.

Services Offered

Waggertail Dog Park offers a range of essential services and amenities designed to create a functional and enjoyable environment for dogs and their owners, while also promoting responsible park use.

  • Spacious Off-Leash Play Areas: The park provides significant space for dogs to run and play off-leash. It is quite large, reportedly over two acres in total, offering ample room for high-energy pursuits. This extensive space minimizes overcrowding and allows for varied play.

  • Separate Areas for Large and Small Dogs: A crucial feature for safety and comfort, the park has two distinct fenced areas: one for large and medium dogs (approximately 0.78 acres) and another for small dogs (approximately 0.21 acres). The small dog area is particularly suitable for smaller and more timid dogs, though other users can use it if not occupied.

  • Waste Bag Stations: To maintain cleanliness, the park provides multiple pet waste stations stocked with poop bags. This encourages responsible disposal of dog waste, contributing to a pleasant environment for all.

  • Trash Receptacles: Conveniently located trash cans are available throughout the park for easy disposal of litter and dog waste.

  • Water Fountains/Bowls: The park is equipped with water fountains or designated areas for dog bowls to ensure pups stay hydrated during their playtime.

  • Benches: There are benches available for human companions to rest and observe their dogs, fostering a comfortable atmosphere for owners.

  • Mandatory Registration: As mentioned, prior registration with the Town of Riverdale Park is required to use the park. This system helps manage usage and ensures that all dogs are licensed and vaccinated according to local regulations.

Features / Highlights

Waggertail Dog Park boasts several features that contribute to its reputation as a beloved spot for Maryland dog owners, particularly in the Riverdale area.

  • Expansive Size: At over two acres, Waggertail Dog Park is considerably larger than many urban dog parks, providing ample space for dogs to truly run, chase, and explore without feeling confined. This vastness is often highlighted by visitors.

  • Natural Elements and Shade: The park features "a couple of big trees" that provide natural shade, offering welcome relief from the summer sun for both dogs and their owners. This natural setting enhances the overall park experience.

  • Friendly Dogs and Owners: A consistent highlight from reviews is the friendly atmosphere, with visitors noting that other pups are generally well-socialized and their parents (owners) are "nice." This contributes to a positive and welcoming community feel.

  • Sand Pit: For dogs that love to dig or simply enjoy a different texture for play, the park reportedly includes a sand pit, offering a unique play element.

  • Mulch and Gravel Surfaces: While it can get muddy, the park incorporates mulch on the periphery and gravel in sunny areas, suggesting an attempt to manage drainage and provide varied terrain for play.

  • Dog Agility Equipment (Reported): Some users mention "dog equipment for climbing or tricks," indicating the presence of agility features that can add mental and physical stimulation for dogs.

  • Active Volunteer Group: The park benefits from the "Friends of Waggertail Dog Park," an active volunteer group that works with the Town of Riverdale Park to maintain the park, educate users, and plan events. This strong community involvement is a significant asset.

  • Well-Regulated Environment: With clear rules regarding dog behavior, vaccination, licensing, and handler limits (maximum 2 dogs per handler), the park aims to maintain a safe and responsible environment for all.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a public park operated by the Town of Riverdale Park, Waggertail Dog Park does not typically offer commercial promotions or discounts on services. Its primary "offer" is the provision of a spacious, well-managed off-leash environment for the community's dogs.

However, the park's registration process itself could be seen as an ongoing "offer" of managed access to a quality facility. The annual permit expires on July 1st, so users are reminded to renew their registration.

The "Friends of Waggertail Dog Park" volunteer group actively works to support the park. While not direct promotions, their efforts might include community clean-up days, informal meet-ups, or advocacy for park improvements. Maryland residents interested in supporting the park or participating in community events are encouraged to seek out and join this group, often via a social media presence (e.g., Facebook). These volunteer efforts indirectly enhance the "value" of the park for all users.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For Maryland locals, particularly those in Riverdale and surrounding areas of Prince George's County, Waggertail Dog Park is an exceptionally suitable and valuable resource for their canine companions. Its most significant appeal lies in its impressive size – over two acres of dedicated off-leash space – which is a rare find in many urban or suburban settings. This vastness allows dogs of all energy levels to truly run, explore, and engage in vigorous play.

The thoughtful separation into large and small dog areas addresses a critical need for safety and comfort, ensuring that every dog can find its ideal play environment. Coupled with readily available waste bag stations, water facilities, and the active involvement of a volunteer group, Waggertail Dog Park offers a robust and engaging experience. For Maryland dog owners seeking a large, community-supported, and stimulating outdoor space for their pups to thrive, Waggertail Dog Park stands out as an excellent choice in Riverdale.

My puppies love going there, the other pups so far are friendly and parents are nice. The place is big and there are a couple of big trees to shelter from the summer sun.

A big fenced in park. Great for dogs of all sizes to run around and play. Be ready to give your dog a bath if it has rained writhing the week. One big puddle when it’s rains/snows, my dog loves that puddle.
