The dog park is big and nice with the grass. There are a lot of benches for the dog owner to sit and watch their dog. However I wish all dog owners clean up their dog poop. There are too much poop in the grass.

Welcome to Heurich Dog Park

For dog owners across Maryland, particularly those residing in the vibrant community of Hyattsville and the broader Prince George's County, finding a dedicated and spacious environment for their beloved canine companions to run freely and interact is an absolute blessing. The Heurich Dog Park, situated within Heurich Community Park in Hyattsville, MD, offers just such a valuable resource. This popular dog park provides a significant expanse of green space where dogs can exercise, socialize, and thrive off-leash, making it a regular destination for many local pet parents.

Heurich Dog Park is notable for its generous size, encompassing approximately one acre (over 36,000 square feet) of fenced-in area. This ample space allows for energetic dogs to engage in spirited games of fetch and enjoy plenty of room to zoom around without feeling confined. A key feature that enhances the safety and comfort for all visitors is the inclusion of separate sections: a dedicated, gated area for small dogs and a larger area for bigger breeds. This thoughtful design helps ensure that pups of all sizes can play comfortably and safely, minimizing potential conflicts and allowing owners greater peace of mind.

While the park offers fantastic facilities, including grassy areas and numerous benches for owners to relax and supervise, user reviews highlight the critical importance of responsible pet ownership. Issues such as uncollected waste and occasional inattentive owners underscore the shared responsibility of maintaining a positive and safe environment for everyone. Despite these common challenges found in any public dog park, the core amenities and the sheer space provided by Heurich Dog Park make it a valued amenity for the Hyattsville community.

Location and Accessibility

The Heurich Dog Park is strategically located at: 6001 Ager Rd, Hyattsville, MD 20782, USA. This address places it within the larger Heurich Community Park, a well-known recreational area managed by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) in Prince George's County. Its location at the intersection of Ager Road and Nicholson Street makes it easily identifiable and accessible for residents of Hyattsville, Riverdale Park, and other surrounding communities.

The park benefits from easy access to parking, a significant convenience that removes a common barrier for many dog owners when visiting public parks. For those relying on public transportation, the park is relatively close to the West Hyattsville Metrorail Station (Green Line), making it accessible for those who prefer not to drive. Several Metrobus routes also serve the general Hyattsville area, further enhancing public transit options. Its straightforward location and convenient access points solidify its role as a practical and frequently visited destination for local dog owners.

Services Offered

The Heurich Dog Park provides essential services and amenities designed to create a positive, safe, and clean off-leash environment for dogs and their owners. As a public park managed by M-NCPPC, its offerings prioritize responsible pet ownership and canine well-being:

  • Dual Fenced Off-Leash Areas: The park features two distinct, fully fenced areas: a large expansive space for general dog play and a separate, gated section specifically for small dogs. This separation enhances safety and comfort for all.
  • Pet Waste Bag Dispensers and Receptacles: The park is equipped with bag dispensers and waste receptacles, designed to make it easy for owners to clean up after their pets and maintain the park's cleanliness.
  • Benches and Shelter for Owners: Numerous benches are provided for dog owners to sit and watch their pets play. There is also a shelter, offering a degree of protection from the elements.
  • Grassy Play Surface: The park primarily features a grass surface, providing a natural and comfortable area for dogs to run and play.
  • Double-Gated Entrances: For enhanced security and to prevent accidental escapes, the park includes double-gated entrances, allowing for safe entry and exit.
  • Water Access (Community Responsibility): While there is a water station noted on some maps or by local initiatives (like a "dog water station" or communal jugs/bowls), consistent provision of clean water bowls and jugs can fluctuate. Owners are strongly encouraged to bring their own water and bowls to ensure their dogs stay hydrated.
Features / Highlights

The Heurich Dog Park stands out with several key features and highlights that make it a highly regarded destination for dog owners in the Maryland area:

We were excited to find a large dog park so close when we moved to Hyattsville, as we've always enjoyed taking our dogs out to play. Unfortunately, we won’t be returning. When we visited, there were four other dogs with two owners who weren’t paying attention at all. The owners didn’t pick up after their dogs or recall them when needed. One of the dogs even got into a fight with ours, and the owner stayed glued to their phone the whole time. Additionally, I suspect some of the dogs weren’t fixed/neutered. For now, we’ll make the 30-minute drive and pay for Bark Social in Bethesda, where every dog is required to be up to date on shots, fixed and registered. It’s a shame there isn’t a better, more responsible option nearby!

The large dog park is not well kept and the amount of poop waiting to be stepped in is absolutely ridiculous. My first (and probably last) experience here is very disappointing.

Great park with great people and dogs for my dog and I to socialize with. Best time to go is between about 4:30 and 7:30 on week nights, there's almost always a crowd there then to really tire the dog out!

Nice dog park attached to a larger park with playgrounds and turf fields. The dog park is divided for small dogs and big dogs. Bring bottles and/or bowls. There's water and poop bag stations. There are also benches for us humans to sit and relax while the pooches (at least mine) run around.
