Welcome to Greenbelt Dog Park (Permit Only)
For dog owners across Maryland, particularly those residing in Prince George's County and the vibrant Greenbelt area, securing a safe, clean, and engaging space for their canine companions to run, play, and socialize is a top priority. The Greenbelt Dog Park, located at 7300 Hanover Dr, Greenbelt, MD 20770, stands out as a unique and highly valued amenity. Notably operating on a "Permit Only" basis, this park offers a controlled and well-maintained environment, fostering a strong sense of community among its users.
Praised by locals as "nice," "open," and "clean," the Greenbelt Dog Park's most celebrated feature, especially during the warmer Maryland summers, is its abundant shade. Reviews consistently highlight that it "has trees and is semi cool," providing a crucial respite from the heat that can make outdoor play challenging for dogs. This thoughtful natural landscaping significantly enhances the comfort and usability of the park throughout much of the year, making it a beloved spot for those seeking refuge from the sun.
Beyond its physical attributes, the Greenbelt Dog Park is known for its vibrant community spirit, exemplified by events like the annual "Dog Expo Block Party." This free, welcoming event, held every first weekend in June, transforms the park into a lively festival for pets and their parents, offering services like free vaccines, vendor stalls, and adoption opportunities. This strong sense of community, combined with a commitment to cleanliness and a comfortable environment, solidifies the Greenbelt Dog Park's reputation as a premier destination for responsible dog owners in Maryland.
The Greenbelt Dog Park is conveniently located at 7300 Hanover Dr, Greenbelt, MD 20770, USA. This address places it squarely within the city of Greenbelt, a well-planned community in Prince George's County, Maryland. Its location makes it highly accessible for residents of Greenbelt and neighboring areas, including College Park, Bowie, Beltsville, and Lanham.
For those traveling by car, the park is easily reachable via Greenbelt's established road networks. Hanover Drive connects to major thoroughfares, ensuring a straightforward drive from various parts of Prince George's County. Greenbelt's strategic location near the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (MD-295), the Capital Beltway (I-495/I-95), and US Route 1 further enhances its accessibility for a broader range of Maryland residents. Ample parking is typically available at well-established municipal parks, making it convenient for visitors to unload their pets and gear.
Public transportation also serves the Greenbelt area. The city is home to the Greenbelt Metro Station (Green Line), and the local bus system (Prince George's County TheBus and WMATA Metrobus) offers routes that may bring visitors within a reasonable walking distance of the park. While specific bus stops directly at the dog park are not always guaranteed, public transit provides a viable option for many residents.
It is crucial to note that the Greenbelt Dog Park operates on a "Permit Only" basis. This means that access is restricted to individuals who have obtained the necessary permit from the City of Greenbelt or the relevant parks department. This permit system, while requiring an extra step, helps ensure that all dogs using the park are registered, vaccinated, and adhere to local regulations, contributing to a safer and more controlled environment for all users. Information on obtaining a permit would typically be available through the City of Greenbelt's official website or Parks and Recreation department.
The Greenbelt Dog Park, operating on a "Permit Only" basis, offers a range of services and amenities designed to provide a well-managed, clean, and comfortable off-leash experience for permitted dogs and their owners. While specific daily services beyond park access are generally not provided, the park's management ensures a high standard of core offerings:
- Fenced Off-Leash Area: The primary service is a secure, designated, and open area where permitted dogs can safely run, play, and socialize freely without a leash. This space is maintained to provide ample room for canine exercise.
- Shade Provided by Trees: A significant advantage, particularly noted in reviews, is the presence of numerous trees that offer considerable shade. This makes the park "semi cool" even on "hot summer day," enhancing comfort for both dogs and humans and allowing for longer, more enjoyable visits.
- Regular Waste Management: The park is described as having "garbage is upkept," implying the presence of trash receptacles and regular emptying, which is crucial for maintaining cleanliness and preventing odors.
- Clean Environment: Users consistently describe the park as "clean," indicating that both park management and users generally adhere to cleanliness standards, making for a pleasant experience.
- Permit System for Controlled Access: The "Permit Only" system is a service that helps manage park usage, ensuring that dogs using the facility are registered and likely up-to-date on vaccinations, which contributes to a safer and healthier environment for all animals.
Additionally, the park is known for hosting a notable annual event that offers community-wide "services":
- Annual Dog Expo Block Party: This event, held the first weekend in June, transforms the park into a hub of pet-related services and activities. While a one-time event, it demonstrates the park's capacity to facilitate:
- Free Vaccinations: Offering essential veterinary services to attendees.
- Vendor Access: Providing free tables for pet service or product vendors to connect with pet parents.
- Pet Adoption Opportunities: Partnering with organizations like the SPCA for on-the-spot adoptions.
- Food and Drink Vendors: For human attendees.
- Community Socialization: Fostering a large-scale gathering for dogs and owners to interact.
The Greenbelt Dog Park (Permit Only) at 7300 Hanover Dr, Greenbelt, MD, boasts several distinctive features and highlights that make it a highly regarded and unique amenity for local dog owners:
- Abundant Natural Shade: This is arguably its most significant and beloved feature, especially in Maryland's warm climate. Reviewers consistently praise the park for its "trees and is semi cool" on "hot summer day." This natural canopy provides crucial relief from the sun, allowing dogs and their owners to enjoy the park for longer periods comfortably.
- Clean and Well-Maintained: Users frequently describe the park as "nice," "open," and "clean," and note that "garbage is upkept." This commitment to cleanliness ensures a pleasant and hygienic environment for all visitors.
- Permit-Only Access: While requiring an extra step, the "Permit Only" system is a significant highlight for many. It suggests a more controlled and potentially safer environment, as users are likely registered and may have met specific requirements (e.g., vaccination records), fostering a more responsible user base.
- Welcoming and Social Atmosphere: Reviews, particularly from the Dog Expo Block Party, vividly describe a "light and calming" atmosphere where "dogs were playing in the play area together. It was like watching children play on the playground together." The observation of dogs running to greet newcomers at the gate further emphasizes a friendly and highly social environment.
- Annual Dog Expo Block Party: This free event, held the first weekend in June, is a major highlight. It transforms the park into a vibrant community festival, offering valuable services like free vaccines, product/service vendors, food, and even on-the-spot pet adoptions. This annual event showcases the park's role as a true community hub.
- Ample Space for Play: The park provides sufficient open space for dogs to run freely, socialize, and expend energy, which is fundamental to a good dog park experience.
- Focus on Responsible Ownership: The permit system and overall cleanliness indicate a park designed to support and encourage responsible dog ownership within the Greenbelt community.
The Greenbelt Dog Park (Permit Only), managed by the City of Greenbelt, operates under a unique model that inherently provides a "special offer" through its controlled access system. While it does not run traditional commercial promotions or discounts, its structure and community engagement offer distinct benefits:
- Permit-Based Access: The "Permit Only" requirement itself is a form of managed access. While it involves a fee (details of which would be available from the City of Greenbelt), it ensures that all dogs using the park are registered, and likely vaccinated and licensed, contributing to a safer and healthier environment than completely open public parks. This controlled access is a key value proposition.
- Annual Dog Expo Block Party (Free to Attend): This highly anticipated event, held the first weekend in June, is a significant "special offer" to the broader pet-owning community. It is free to attend and provides a multitude of benefits:
- Free Vaccinations: A major cost-saving and health benefit for pet parents.
- Free Vendor Tables: An "offer" to local pet businesses to promote their services/products.
- Adoption Opportunities: Facilitating on-the-spot adoptions with organizations like the SPCA.
- Community Engagement: A large-scale social event for dogs and their owners, fostering connections and a festive atmosphere.
- Food and Drink Vendors: Providing convenient options for attendees.
- Consistent High Maintenance: The park's consistent cleanliness and upkeep, as praised by reviews ("open clean garbage is upkept"), can be seen as an ongoing "offer" of a premium, well-managed environment for the permit holders.

Jul 27, 2023 · jish kellyThere was a Dog Expo Block Party at the dog park. It is apparently held the first weekend in June every year. This was my first time hearing of it and so, I decided to go and check it out. It was free to attend which was great. Pet parents were welcomed to bring their fur babies of all sizes to come out and get vaccines for free and enjoy a day out for pets to socialize and play. The atmosphere was light and calming while I was there. There were vendors there that were provided free tables to present their pet services or products to pet parents who came to the expo. Food and drink vendors were there for people to purchase. The SPCA was stationed out there and they had kittens for people to adopt on the spot and take home. What I really liked was how the dogs were playing in the play area together. It was like watching children play on the playground together. They seemed so happy to be out and meeting new friends. Everytime a pet parent approached the play area with their dog, the other dogs would run to the gate to greet the new dog and welcome him into the play area. It was sooo cute to watch. I really had a nice time and will definitely attend next year.
Jun 09, 2019 · ANTONICIA HOLMESVery nice dog park. The community definitely takes care of this park. And they actually pick up after their fur babies! A lot of room for them to run and play.
Jun 17, 2023 · Nichelle CouncilThis is NOT a public park. I was here alone (no other dogs or people in sight) for less than 10 minutes when the animal control for greenbelt pulled up promptly to let me know I had to have a paid permit and be a city of greenbelt resident to come here and made me and my dog leave. There’s no signs about this anywhere either which the animal control also pointed out. Absolutely ridiculous. I live in the Landover area and there are no dog parks in my area, what do I pay taxes for? They are really here waiting for me to leave and standing guard for a empty sad dog park.
Aug 31, 2022 · briana andrewsGreen Belt Dog Park, located in the vicinity of College Park, Maryland, is a popular spot for dog owners in the area. However, when compared to the exceptional Hollywood Dog Park nearby, there are certain aspects that make it fall short of being the top choice for dog enthusiasts. One significant drawback of Green Belt Dog Park is that it requires a pass or entry fee to gain access. Unlike the Hollywood Dog Park, which welcomes everyone without any financial constraints, this policy at Green Belt may deter some potential visitors. Dog parks should ideally be open and accessible to all, providing a free and inclusive space for people to socialize and enjoy quality time with their canine companions. While Green Belt Dog Park does have some shaded areas, it falls short compared to the generous canopy of trees found at Hollywood Dog Park. Dogs, especially during hot summer days, need ample shade to stay cool and comfortable while playing. Hollywood Dog Park's thoughtful provision of shade demonstrates its commitment to the well-being and enjoyment of both dogs and their owners While Green Belt Dog Park does have some shaded areas, it falls short compared to the generous canopy of trees found at Hollywood Dog Park. Dogs, especially during hot summer days, need ample shade to stay cool and comfortable while playing. Hollywood Dog Park's thoughtful provision of shade demonstrates its commitment to the well-being and enjoyment of both dogs and their owners. Another aspect that could use improvement at Green Belt Dog Park is its parking situation. While it does offer a fair amount of parking spaces, it can still become congested during peak hours. Hollywood Dog Park has clearly planned for such contingencies and offers a more spacious and well-organized parking area, ensuring a stress-free arrival and departure for visitors. The cleanliness of a dog park is essential for a pleasant experience, and while Green Belt Dog Park is generally tidy, it falls short when compared to the exceptional cleanliness maintained at Hollywood Dog Park. A cleaner environment not only reflects a park's dedication to hygiene and aesthetics but also contributes to the overall enjoyment of all visitors. The mood and atmosphere at Green Belt Dog Park are satisfactory, but it lacks the friendly and welcoming vibe that I experienced at Hollywood Dog Park. The sense of community and camaraderie among dog owners is an important aspect of any dog park, and Hollywood Dog Park excels in fostering a warm and inviting environment for everyone. In conclusion, while Green Belt Dog Park does provide a suitable space for dogs to play and interact, it pales in comparison to the outstanding features and amenities offered by Hollywood Dog Park. The requirement of a pass for entry, limited shade, parking challenges, and a somewhat lesser level of cleanliness and ambiance are areas where Green Belt Dog Park could improve to make it more attractive and accessible to dog owners in the area. If you're looking for an exceptional dog park experience near College Park, Maryland, Hollywood Dog Park remains the top choice for its inclusive, dog-friendly, and well-designed environment
