Welcome to Spencer's Run
For dog owners across Connecticut, finding a safe, expansive, and well-maintained environment for their canine companions to freely play and socialize is a top priority. Nestled within the picturesque Waveny Park in New Canaan, Spencer's Run stands as a premier destination that offers precisely that. This isn't your average public dog park; Spencer's Run operates as a member-only facility, ensuring a controlled, clean, and secure environment for all its furry and human visitors. This exclusive access fosters a strong sense of community among responsible dog owners and contributes to the park's consistently high standards.
The philosophy behind Spencer's Run aligns with providing an optimal experience for dogs. As one satisfied member enthusiastically put it, "Spencer’s run is a wonderful dog park- clean and spacious. My pup enjoyed her run!" This highlights the park's commitment to offering ample room for dogs to truly stretch their legs and engage in vigorous play. For many dogs, especially those living in more confined spaces, the opportunity to run off-leash is not just a luxury but a vital component of their physical and mental well-being. It allows them to burn energy, practice important social skills, and interact with a diverse group of other canines in a secure setting.
While its "members only park with keycode entry" structure might differentiate it from other public spaces, this system is precisely what contributes to its high quality and safety. It ensures that all dogs entering the park are registered, vaccinated, and in compliance with park rules, leading to a more predictable and positive environment. The large, mostly grass expanse provides a natural and comfortable surface for play, further enhancing the dog's experience.
This article will delve into all aspects of Spencer's Run Dog Park, providing comprehensive details for Connecticut residents interested in joining this unique canine community. We'll cover its exact location, the amenities it offers, the benefits of its membership model, and how to become a part of this exclusive dog-friendly oasis in New Canaan.
Spencer's Run Dog Park is conveniently located at 677 South Ave, New Canaan, CT 06840, USA. This address places it squarely within the beautiful Waveny Park, a prominent and cherished green space in New Canaan. Waveny Park itself is a significant landmark in Fairfield County, known for its sprawling acres, historic mansion, and various recreational facilities. The dog park's integration within such a well-regarded municipal park adds to its appeal, offering a picturesque setting for canine activities.
Accessibility to Spencer's Run is straightforward for residents across Connecticut, especially those in Fairfield County. New Canaan is well-connected by local and state roads, making it a manageable drive from neighboring towns like Darien, Stamford, Wilton, and Norwalk. The specific location within Waveny Park is generally described as being "by the Lapham Road entrance to Waveny Park," providing a clear navigational point for visitors.
A significant advantage for visitors is the availability of parking. Information indicates that "there is plenty of parking available directly adjacent to the dog park." This ample and convenient parking eliminates a common frustration associated with visiting popular public spaces, ensuring a hassle-free arrival and departure for dog owners. The ease of access, combined with a beautiful natural setting, makes Spencer's Run a highly desirable destination for those seeking an exceptional off-leash experience in Connecticut. While it is a member-only park, the structured entry with a keycode further streamlines access for authorized users, contributing to an efficient and secure arrival process. The phone number for inquiries, (203) 594-3600, also serves as a direct line to the New Canaan Parks & Recreation office, which oversees the park, further facilitating accessibility for potential members.
Spencer's Run Dog Park, operating as a controlled, member-only facility, offers a range of specific services and provisions designed to ensure a high-quality and safe experience for its users. These are more structured than typical public parks due to its exclusive nature.
-
Secure, Fenced Off-Leash Area: The primary service is a substantial, securely "fenced" area (approximately 1.5 acres) where dogs can run and play off-leash without concern for their safety or accidental wandering. This provides crucial freedom for canine exercise and socialization. The "keycode entry" system further reinforces this security, ensuring only registered members can access the park.
-
Spacious Grass Play Surface: The park primarily features "mostly grass," offering a natural and comfortable surface for dogs to run, jump, and play. Grass is generally preferred by many dog owners as it is easier on paws and joints compared to harder surfaces, and it contributes to a more aesthetically pleasing environment.
-
Water Access for Dogs: Hydration is critical, and Spencer's Run provides "water" for dogs. While specific details may vary, this typically includes water fountains or spigots, ensuring dogs can rehydrate after vigorous activity. One review mentions a "water fountain inside the dog park with 3 water bowls," highlighting robust provision.
-
Waste Management Amenities: Promoting cleanliness and responsible pet ownership, the park provides "trash and bags." This means readily available waste bags and receptacles for proper disposal of dog waste, which is essential for maintaining a hygienic and pleasant environment for all members.
-
Benches for Owners: For the comfort of human companions, the park includes "benches for owners." These seating areas allow members to relax, supervise their dogs, and socialize with other dog owners, fostering a sense of community.
-
Controlled and Regulated Environment: By being a member-only park with strict registration requirements (including proof of vaccinations, licensing, and spay/neuter status), Spencer's Run offers the "service" of a highly regulated and safer environment. This minimizes the risk of encountering unvaccinated, unlicensed, or potentially aggressive dogs, contributing to a more predictable and positive experience. Rules like "all dogs must be spayed or neutered" and prohibitions on aggressive behavior are enforced to maintain this standard.
-
Dedicated Maintenance: As a registered facility, it benefits from dedicated maintenance, ensuring it remains "clean and spacious" with regularly "cut grass," as noted by members.
These structured services collectively contribute to Spencer's Run being a premium dog park experience in Connecticut.
Spencer's Run Dog Park stands out in the Connecticut landscape due to several key features and highlights that enhance its appeal and contribute to its excellent reputation among local dog owners.
-
Exclusive Member-Only Access with Keycode Entry: This is arguably the most significant highlight. Operating as a "members only park with keycode entry," Spencer's Run ensures a controlled and secure environment. This system means that all dogs using the park are registered, vaccinated (including rabies), licensed, and often spayed/neutered, significantly reducing the risk of illness or aggression. This exclusivity provides peace of mind for owners seeking a consistently safe and well-regulated play space. The use of a "user code" or key fob prevents unauthorized entry and maintains the integrity of the park.
-
Generous Size and "Mostly Grass" Play Area: The park is described as a "large space, mostly grass" and approximately "1.5-acre fenced" area. This ample room allows dogs to run at full speed, engage in extensive play, and explore freely. The grass surface is gentler on paws and joints compared to harder alternatives, making it comfortable for dogs of all ages and energy levels.
-
Exceptional Cleanliness and Spaciousness: Member reviews consistently praise Spencer's Run as being "clean and spacious." This indicates a high standard of maintenance and a commitment to providing a pleasant environment for both dogs and their owners. A clean park encourages responsible behavior and fosters a more enjoyable experience for everyone.
-
Comprehensive Amenities for Dogs and Owners: The park is well-equipped with essential features: "water, trash and bags" are readily available, ensuring hydration and promoting cleanliness. There are also "benches for owners," allowing them to relax comfortably while supervising their pets. One review specifically mentioned "a water fountain inside the dog park with 3 water bowls," indicating robust water provision.
-
Location within Waveny Park: Being situated within the expansive and beautiful Waveny Park in New Canaan offers additional benefits. While the dog park is a dedicated fenced area, visitors can enjoy the surrounding parkland for on-leash walks before or after their off-leash adventures, enhancing the overall outdoor experience.
-
Mandatory Spay/Neuter and Vaccination Policies: As part of its controlled environment, Spencer's Run requires "all dogs must be spayed or neutered" and display "current rabies tag, Town license, and Spencer's Run ID tags." These strict health and safety protocols are a major highlight for owners concerned about the well-being and behavior of other dogs in the park.
These features collectively define Spencer's Run as a top-tier dog park experience in Connecticut, prioritizing safety, cleanliness, and ample space for canine enjoyment.
As a municipal, member-only facility, Spencer's Run Dog Park does not offer typical commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the retail sense. Its value proposition is centered around its exclusive, well-maintained, and safe environment, which is sustained through its membership structure.
However, the "offers" come in the form of its structured membership fees, which provide access to a premium dog park experience:
-
Tiered Annual Membership Fees: Spencer's Run operates on an annual membership basis, with different rates for residents and non-residents of New Canaan. This tiered pricing can be seen as a "special offer" for local residents, providing them with a discounted rate for contributing to the local tax base.
-
New Canaan Residents: $25 for the first dog, and $15 for each additional dog.
-
Non-Residents: $40 for the first dog, and $15 for each additional dog.
These fees contribute directly to the maintenance, cleanliness, and security of the park, including amenities like water, waste bags, and the keycode entry system.
-
-
Key Fob Access (Potential Additional Cost): While access is via keycode, some information suggests there might be an additional cost for a physical key fob (e.g., $15 each). This ensures secure, personalized access.
-
Consistent High Standards: The ongoing "promotion" is the consistent high standard of cleanliness, spaciousness, and safety provided by the park, which is a direct benefit of the membership model. Members are essentially paying for a premium, well-regulated environment.
-
Exclusive Community Access: The member-only status offers the "special offer" of belonging to a community of responsible dog owners who prioritize their pets' well-being and adhere to park rules. This reduces the likelihood of encountering aggressive or unvaccinated dogs, which can be a concern in open public dog parks.
To become a member, applicants must provide proof of current rabies vaccination, town license, and spay/neuter status for each dog. Applications are typically processed through the New Canaan Parks & Recreation office. New Canaan residents and other interested Connecticut dog owners should always consult the official New Canaan Parks & Recreation website or contact their office directly for the most current information on membership fees, application procedures, and any specific requirements.
For those interested in learning more about Spencer's Run Dog Park, including membership details, park rules, or general inquiries, the primary points of contact are through the New Canaan Parks & Recreation Department, which oversees the facility.

Jan 11, 2025 · Kindred WindSpencer’s run is a wonderful dog park- clean and spacious. My pup enjoyed her run!
Mar 02, 2025 · Chris LiSuch a clean and lovely dog park! You have to apply to join and show proof of all vaccinations. Huge relief that you are actually with other dogs who are vaccinated… Has a very cute dog fountain for if your pup is thirsty too! All the bad reviews left no comment and probably don’t like that you have to apply - plenty of other dog parks in the area to go to! Spencer’s definitely has a nice sense of security and all owners are very vigilant of their pups.
Apr 18, 2023 · Matthew RogersBeen here many times since 2012. The facilities are clean, well kept for and the dog park is secure and usually used.
Jan 03, 2022 · Greg GingoldMembership required. Lame. We were on a road trip and I wanted to let the pup have a run but the gate was locked. I hope it's not expensive, literally just a fenced area no different than countless other free and open dog parks. (fine, it's a nice looking fence but still lame).
