The park's location on General Booth Boulevard ensures relatively straightforward vehicular access from various parts of Virginia Beach. One review notes its specific placement "at the end of Baumbach drive in hockey rinks," which provides a more precise landmark for visitors navigating within the larger Red Wing Park complex. Ample parking is typically available within Red Wing Park, making arrival hassle-free for most visitors.
Red Wing Dog Park operates with generous hours, generally open daily from sunrise to sunset, with some sources indicating specific hours of 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM. This extended schedule offers considerable flexibility, allowing dog owners to visit at their convenience, whether it's for an early morning romp or an evening play session. As a public city park facility, it's advisable to check the City of Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation website for any temporary closures due to weather or maintenance, especially during special events like the annual Cherry Blossom Festival held at Red Wing Park, where "dog park entrances will be modified." Despite these occasional adjustments, its consistent availability is a strong asset for local users.
Red Wing Dog Park offers a robust set of services and amenities designed to provide a safe, clean, and enjoyable experience for dogs and their owners. These features contribute significantly to its popularity within the Virginia Beach community.
- Two Separate Fenced Areas: A key service, the park provides "two separate fenced-in areas," specifically one "for small dogs and one for large dogs." This thoughtful separation ensures a safer and more comfortable environment for all canines, allowing smaller or more timid dogs to play without being overwhelmed, and larger dogs to play more vigorously within their designated space. The total off-leash facility is approximately 1 acre.
- Water Stand with Drainage: The park is equipped with a "water stand that drains." This crucial amenity ensures that dogs can stay hydrated during their active playtime, and the drainage system helps to prevent muddy conditions around the water source, contributing to overall cleanliness. Some reviews specify it has a "water fountain to supply fresh water."
- Waste Stations with Bags and Bins: Red Wing Dog Park is "well maintained with bags and trash bins." The availability of waste stations with dog waste bags and accessible trash receptacles promotes responsible pet ownership and helps maintain a clean and hygienic environment for all users.
- Shade Structures and Benches: For the comfort of human visitors, the park provides "shade structures and benches." These seating areas offer a place for owners to relax, observe their dogs, and socialize with other pet parents, with protection from the sun.
- Open Fields for Running: Even though the "grass is pretty much gone" in some areas due to heavy use, the park still offers ample "room to run" and "open fields." This expansive space is ideal for high-energy dogs to sprint and play fetch.
- Handicap Accessibility: The park is noted as "wheelchair accessible," promoting inclusivity and ensuring that visitors with mobility needs can comfortably enjoy the facility with their dogs.
These comprehensive services collectively make Red Wing Dog Park a highly functional and desirable destination for dog owners in Virginia Beach, supporting active play and community interaction.
Red Wing Dog Park distinguishes itself through several key features and highlights that enhance its appeal as a premier dog park in Virginia Beach, VA. These aspects contribute significantly to its positive reputation among local dog owners.
- Effective Size Separation: A standout feature is the clear division into "one for small dogs and one for large dogs." This thoughtful design minimizes potential conflicts and ensures that dogs of all sizes can play safely and comfortably, tailored to their energy levels and play styles. This is a highly valued amenity by users.
- Reliable Water Access: The presence of a "water stand that drains" or a "water fountain" is a crucial highlight. This convenient and clean water source is essential for keeping dogs hydrated during playtime, especially in Virginia's climate. The efficient drainage helps prevent muddy conditions, maintaining a cleaner environment.
- Consistent Cleanliness & Maintenance: Despite comments about grass wear, the park is consistently described as "well maintained with bags and trash bins." This indicates a proactive approach to cleanliness, providing the necessary tools for owners to responsibly clean up after their pets, fostering a more pleasant experience for everyone.
- Friendly Community Vibe: Visitors frequently praise the "very respectful and easy going" owners encountered at the park. This positive social dynamic creates a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere, encouraging more frequent visits and stronger community bonds among local dog enthusiasts. "Everyone there is chill," noted one reviewer.
- Ample Running Space: Even with heavy use, the park offers "plenty of room to run" within its 1-acre fenced area. This ensures that even high-energy dogs have sufficient space to exercise vigorously and enjoy off-leash freedom.
- Shaded Areas and Benches: The availability of "shade structures and benches" enhances comfort for human companions, allowing them to relax and supervise their dogs out of direct sunlight.
- Integration within Red Wing Park: Being part of the larger Red Wing Park means visitors can enjoy additional amenities beyond the dog park, such as walking trails and beautiful gardens (especially during the Cherry Blossom Festival). This offers a more comprehensive outdoor experience for families. Some sources mention "new trees planted," indicating ongoing improvements to enhance natural shade.
These combined features make Red Wing Dog Park a highly functional, user-friendly, and enjoyable destination, solidifying its place as a top choice for dog owners in Virginia Beach.
As a public facility managed by the City of Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation, Red Wing Dog Park does not typically offer commercial promotions or discount codes. Its primary "promotion" is the consistent provision of a well-maintained, free-to-use off-leash dog park as a valuable public service to residents.
However, the City of Virginia Beach does have general guidelines and requirements for dog park usage that, while not "promotions," contribute to the overall positive experience and safety for all users. These include:
- Free Access: The park is free to use, meaning there are no daily or annual membership fees required to bring your dog, making it an accessible option for all Virginia Beach residents.
- Required Licensing and Vaccinations: For the safety and health of all park users, the City of Virginia Beach requires dogs to be licensed and up-to-date on their vaccinations. While not a promotion, compliance ensures a safer environment.
Furthermore, Red Wing Park, as a larger municipal park, is frequently a venue for various community events and festivals. While these are not directly "promotions" for the dog park itself, they can enhance a visit or provide additional recreational opportunities for families:
- Cherry Blossom Festival: Red Wing Park is famously home to an annual Cherry Blossom Festival, which attracts many visitors. During this time, "dog park entrances will be modified" due to high traffic, but it offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the park.
- Virginia Beach Parks & Rec Pup-Ups: Virginia Beach Parks & Rec occasionally hosts "Pup-Up" events at various city dog parks, including Red Wing. These events sometimes feature vendors with dog-themed items, local businesses, or educational content. Keeping an eye on the Parks & Rec event calendar is recommended for these.
To stay informed about any community events, rules, or operational updates, Virginia Beach residents are encouraged to:
- Check the official City of Virginia Beach Parks & Recreation website for event calendars and dog park information.
- Look for announcements or flyers posted at the park itself.
- Follow local Virginia Beach pet-related community groups or social media pages.
The consistent, free access to a well-equipped dog park remains the most significant ongoing benefit of Red Wing Dog Park for the Virginia Beach community.

Apr 11, 2022 · J. MassieLocated at the end of Baumbach drive in hockey rinks, one for small dogs and one for large dogs.
May 06, 2025 · Amelie Lindberg-LivingstonDecent size dog park with two separate gated areas for different size dogs. Usually pretty respectful owners, but during my last visit, there was a lot of unpicked up dog waste so it was rather stinky. A lot of parking, walking in area, bathrooms with running water. Worth the visit, but needed a little upkeep.
Dec 30, 2021 · kristin wI came here for the first time and my dog was instantly attacked by 10-12 dogs. Had to physically carry my dog out of the park while other dogs were jumping up and trying to continue to attack him. A 60 pound dog mind you. A couple owners apologized and said their dogs didn’t do well with others or puppies. Apparently it’s common for the misbehaved dogs to be at Red wing. I have never heard anything good about this place. For the love of your dog please do not bring them here.
Feb 26, 2023 · Rheagan RighterGreat experience for dogs to learn to socialize. The space is separated into two sections, one is always filled with friendly dogs (you can let them roam free) and the other one is an open space for those in training. There is water station and other parts of the park where you can walk your dog alone. Bring your leash at all times.
