My family and I have come here for years with many different dogs. It's always a pleasant experience and there almost always seems to be other dogs there when we go which is what we go for! Just don't let your kids play in the bamboo forest if you bring them , lots of poop back there lol .

Welcome to Colonial Place Dog Park

For dog owners in Norfolk, Virginia, finding a reliable and welcoming spot for their canine companions to play and interact is incredibly important. Colonial Place Dog Park, situated at 405 Delaware Avenue, has long been a cherished fixture in the neighborhood, providing a dedicated space for dogs to enjoy off-leash freedom. It’s more than just a fenced area; it's a vibrant community hub where both pets and their owners can socialize and enjoy the outdoors.

Colonial Place Dog Park is consistently praised by local residents for its pleasant atmosphere and its ability to foster positive dog-to-dog interactions. Many families have made it a regular part of their routine for years, a testament to its consistent appeal. Visitors frequently highlight the friendly environment, where it's common to find other dogs and their "fur parents" ready to interact. This dog park is celebrated for its natural shade, providing a comfortable environment even on sunny days, and for its convenient location next to a children's park, offering a versatile outing for families. While recent information suggests some areas, like a bamboo forest, might require extra vigilance regarding cleanliness, the overall sentiment points to Colonial Place Dog Park as a highly valued and frequently returned-to spot for the Norfolk dog-loving community.

Colonial Place Dog Park is conveniently located in the Colonial Place neighborhood of Norfolk, Virginia, making it easily accessible for local residents. You can find this popular dog park at:

405 Delaware Ave, Norfolk, VA 23508, USA

The park's location on Delaware Avenue positions it within a residential area, contributing to its neighborhood feel. Accessibility is generally good, with street parking typically available, though like many popular urban spots, it "might be tough if a lot of people are here." Its integration into the Colonial Place Greenway suggests accessible pathways that connect to the surrounding area, making it easy for those walking from nearby homes.

Colonial Place Dog Park generally operates with extensive hours, often from 6:00 AM to 7:30 PM, seven days a week, though some sources indicate sunrise to sunset. This generous schedule provides ample opportunity for dog owners to fit a visit into their busy routines, whether it's an early morning energizer or an evening play session. Being an unmonitored city park facility, it’s advisable to check for any temporary closures due to maintenance or inclement weather on the City of Norfolk Parks and Recreation website, but its consistent availability is a strong point for local users.

Colonial Place Dog Park provides a range of essential services and amenities designed to create a comfortable and engaging environment for dogs and their owners. These offerings contribute to its popularity and functionality.

  • Fully Fenced Off-Leash Area: The park offers a secure, fully enclosed space where dogs can safely run and play without the constraint of a leash. This is a fundamental service, ensuring peace of mind for owners and maximum freedom for their pets. It is described as a "good size area" for dogs to roam.
  • Water Fountain: A crucial amenity, the park includes a water fountain for canine hydration. This ensures that dogs can stay refreshed during active play, which is particularly important during warmer weather. One review noted a temporary "lack of water" but also that a "water spigot has been installed and is almost ready to use," suggesting this amenity is intended to be consistently available.
  • Seating Areas: For the comfort of human companions, the park is equipped with "stone sitting benches" and sufficient seating. These areas allow owners to relax, observe their dogs, and socialize with other dog parents.
  • Natural Shade: A significant benefit, the park is noted for having "shade" provided by trees. This natural tree cover offers a welcome respite from direct sunlight, making visits more comfortable for both dogs and owners, especially on hot days.
  • Dog Waste Bag Dispensers: While one review mentioned bringing their own bags, other sources indicate that the park "has two dispensers with bags to dispose of dog waste." This service promotes cleanliness and responsible pet ownership within the park.
  • Toys Available: Some accounts mention "plenty of toys, including a tree tug," scattered around the park for dogs to play with. This adds an extra element of fun and stimulation for visiting pups.
  • Kids Park Next Door: For families with both canine and human children, the proximity to a "kids park right next door" is a convenient feature, allowing for varied activities in one outing.

It's important for visitors to note that while the park aims to provide these amenities, periodic checks on the City of Norfolk website or contacting Parks and Recreation might be wise to confirm their current operational status, especially regarding water availability or any maintenance issues that could temporarily impact park conditions.

Colonial Place Dog Park is well-regarded in the Norfolk community for several key features and highlights that enhance its appeal and utility for local dog owners.

  • Consistent Socialization Opportunities: A major highlight is the park's vibrant community aspect. Visitors consistently note that "there almost always seems to be other dogs there," which is a primary reason many owners visit. This fosters excellent opportunities for dog-to-dog interaction and socialization, crucial for canine development and well-being.
  • Shaded Environment: The presence of ample "shade" from trees is a significant benefit, especially during warmer months. This natural cover provides a comfortable environment for both dogs to play without overheating and for owners to relax.
  • Family-Friendly Proximity: The park's location "right next door" to a children's park makes it particularly appealing for families with both canine and human children. This allows for a versatile outing where everyone can enjoy their preferred form of recreation simultaneously.
  • Welcoming Atmosphere: Reviews consistently describe the "dogs and their fur parents were friendly," indicating a positive and inclusive atmosphere. This welcoming vibe contributes to a pleasant experience for new and returning visitors alike.
  • Ample Space for Roaming: Despite being a neighborhood park, it offers a "good size area for dogs to roam" with "plenty of room" for exploration and running around, even for multiple dogs at once.
  • Established Community Presence: Having been a regular spot for families "for years," the park has a strong, established community presence. This long-standing use reflects its reliability and value to the Colonial Place neighborhood and beyond.

While one review cautiously mentioned a "bamboo forest" area where pet waste might accumulate, this highlights the importance of individual owner responsibility rather than a park deficiency. The overall sentiment points to Colonial Place Dog Park as a well-loved and consistently enjoyable destination for dog owners seeking a friendly, shaded, and spacious environment for their pets.

As a public dog park managed by the City of Norfolk Parks and Recreation, Colonial Place Dog Park primarily offers its services free of charge to all residents. Therefore, traditional commercial "promotions or special offers" are not applicable in the way a private business might provide them. Its main "promotion" is the provision of a valuable, accessible, and well-maintained off-leash area as a community resource.

However, the City of Norfolk has general rules for dog park usage that serve to ensure a safe and responsible environment for all. These aren't promotions but are crucial guidelines that benefit the entire community:

  • No Fees: The park is free to use, eliminating a financial barrier for pet owners and making it an accessible option for daily exercise and socialization.
  • Required Vaccinations and Licensing: All dogs using Norfolk dog parks are generally required to wear valid rabies and city license tags. This ensures a baseline level of health and safety for all interacting animals.
  • Owner Responsibility: The expectation that "owners must scoop the poop" and "responsible dog owners bring their own bags" contributes to the park's cleanliness and pleasantness, a benefit for all users.

While specific events at Colonial Place Dog Park are not frequently advertised as "promotions," Norfolk Parks and Recreation often organizes city-wide or neighborhood events that are pet-friendly or related to park maintenance. Local residents are encouraged to:

  • Check the official City of Norfolk Parks and Recreation website for their calendar of events.
  • Monitor local neighborhood association announcements or social media groups for the Colonial Place area, as community clean-ups or pet-focused gatherings might be organized by residents.
  • Look for any posted notices or flyers at the park itself during visits.

The consistent, free access to a shaded, friendly, and well-regarded space for dogs remains Colonial Place Dog Park's most significant ongoing benefit to the Norfolk community.

This was the first dog park experience I've had, and it was great. There were only 2 additional visitors during out visit. But the dogs and their fur parents were friendly. My dog had a great time running around. There was a lack of water that another fur parent brought to my attention. But luckily my bf and I came prepared with water bottles. The shade helps you stay out of the sun. There's a kids park right next door for your little ones too. I will surely return!

Really a nice dog park, plenty of space to run around. Well maintained. Owners are for the most part friendly and responsible

Dogs love this park. Only thing is that there is a lot of dirt and if it rains it's a muddy mess. Other than that, it's a great dog park. Our pup loves the big dog bowl 😂

I live in the neighborhood and frequent the park often. There's never bags in the bag station so make sure to bring your own. Watch your step too because people often do not pick up after their pets.
