I was trying to save my 20 pound terrier yesterday from some pitbull/boxer mix dog that weights more than me. No command to “get down” from the owner of the dog. I was screaming on top of my lungs because I was so terrified. This dog wouldn’t get down. The owner is lucky I didn’t call the cops. They would’ve taken her dog from her. I wouldnt suggest this park for small dog owners. City really needs to separate it into two. The problem with some big dogs are not them but the owners who don’t train them well and do not pay attention when they play with other dogs. It’s all fun until someone gets hurt. That dog would’ve broken mine into two just with its weight. Extremely unpleasant and terrifying experience. You shouldn’t own a dog like that if you don’t care enough to train it and be on top of it when you are in public. And the audacity to not even own up to it. Some people.

Features / Highlights
  • Central Santa Monica Location: Pacific Street Park's prime location in Santa Monica makes it incredibly convenient for local residents. Being situated centrally means easy access for urban dwellers who might otherwise have limited options for off-leash dog exercise. This accessibility is a major benefit for quick daily visits or longer playtimes.

  • Open and Flat Layout: The park features an open and flat layout, which provides a straightforward and unobstructed space for dogs to run and play. While it doesn't boast grass, its dirt and wood chip surface offers a consistent terrain for chasing balls, wrestling, and general canine frolicking. The flat nature also contributes to visibility, allowing owners to keep a close eye on their pets.

  • Less Crowded Environment: Compared to some other dog parks in the region, Pacific Street Park is often noted for being "open and flat and doesn't get as crowded." For owners who prefer a slightly less chaotic environment, this can be a significant advantage, allowing for more relaxed play and easier supervision of their dog's interactions.

  • Water Station Available: A dedicated water station for dogs is a practical amenity, ensuring that pets can stay hydrated during their play sessions, especially on warm California days. While some reviews suggest bringing a personal bowl for hygiene, the presence of water is a fundamental convenience.

  • Prevalence of Tennis Balls: A quirky yet practical highlight mentioned by users is the frequent presence of "tennis balls buried in the dirt and wood chips." For dogs who love to fetch, this means there's often a ready supply of toys, adding to the fun without owners needing to bring their own every time.

  • Owner Attentiveness Encouraged: The park fosters an environment where attentive dog ownership is key. While challenging incidents can occur, the park tends to be favored by owners who "pay attention to your dog even as they socialize," promoting a community of responsible pet parents. This focus on supervision is a crucial feature for maintaining a safe environment.

  • Size for Vigilance: Described as "not huge," the park's compact size can be a benefit for owners who want to keep their dog in sight at all times. This closer proximity allows for quicker intervention if an "unruly dog/person comes into the park," providing a sense of control and security for pet owners.

This is probably the best park around for owners who understand that a dog park is not the equivalent of taking your 14 y/o to the mall. If you pay attention to your dog even as they socialize with other dogs and/or occasionally engage in fetch - this park can be great. It’s not huge and has no grass, but it’s open and flat and doesn’t get as crowded. The size can be tougher for big dogs when there are multiple trying to play ball, but it’s a big benefit if an unruly dog/person comes into the park because your dog is always close by. There’s water and usually tennis balls buried in the dirt and wood chips - which are my dogs favorite smh. All in all this is a decent option for those who don’t risk the ticket by playing by the beach. There’s a water station that can sometimes be gross so bring a bowl if you have one. I recommend going at a late hour to beat the rush.

Its a great park maintained well perfect for bringing your dog to play with, leashes are not needed because it is gated in. There are scoopers to clean up after your dog has done his or her business.

Smallish dog park on Main and Pacific. There is water pump and bowl for thirsty pups and scoopers and trash for doody but no bags. Some shade and at least two park benches for people. I've always met nice folks and dogs here but just note there is no special small dog area, it's just one big square lot (maybe 10,000 sq. Feet or 1/4 acre?)

Great large, open space. Dirt and chip grounds, no grass. There is NOT a designated small dog/ large dog area, it's all for one. A few benches for seating and free accessible water & community bowls for the pups.
