Welcome to Herb Katz Dog Park

For dog owners in Santa Monica, California, and the surrounding Westside communities, finding a dedicated and spacious environment for their furry friends to socialize and exercise off-leash is a daily quest. The Herb Katz Dog Park, nestled within the larger Joslyn Park, stands out as a highly favored destination among locals. It's more than just a dog park; it's a vibrant community hub where canines can burn off energy, make new friends, and enjoy the freedom of off-leash play, all within a designated and generally well-maintained space. This park embodies Santa Monica's commitment to providing essential recreational opportunities for its beloved canine residents.

The enduring popularity of Herb Katz Dog Park is largely due to its thoughtful design and robust amenities. Covering 1.25 acres, this enclosed park offers ample room for dogs to run, chase, and engage in vigorous play. A significant highlight, and one frequently praised by its dedicated users, is the provision of "separate little dog section" alongside a large dog area. This crucial division ensures that pups of all sizes and temperaments can enjoy their playtime safely and comfortably, fostering a more harmonious environment for all.

Beyond the physical space, the social fabric of Herb Katz Dog Park is a key draw. Many users describe it as their "favorite place to come to each and every day," often citing the presence of "regulars that come here at certain times." This creates a welcoming atmosphere where dogs can "get acquainted with the same dog regularly and have friends," and their owners can build connections within the community. This camaraderie transforms routine visits into enriching social experiences for both humans and their canine companions, making it a true gathering spot for Santa Monica's dog lovers.

While the park generally maintains a good standard of cleanliness, local feedback acknowledges that "maintenance workers are late" sometimes and that issues "happen quite often." This suggests that while efforts are made, ongoing community vigilance and communication with city services (like 311 app requests) are part of the user experience to ensure the park consistently meets the high expectations of Santa Monica residents. Despite these occasional maintenance nuances, the park's fundamental value as a dedicated off-leash space remains paramount, superseding other options in the area for many.

The Herb Katz Dog Park's integration within Joslyn Park also offers additional benefits, as it means access to other amenities within the larger park setting, such as playgrounds and picnic areas. This allows families to enjoy a broader recreational outing, catering to the needs of all family members. Its established presence and consistent popularity underscore its role as a vital component of Santa Monica's pet-friendly infrastructure, providing a much-needed outlet for canine exercise and socialization in a dynamic urban environment.

Its accessible location makes it a popular choice for residents throughout Santa Monica and the nearby Westside communities.

For those arriving by car, Herb Katz Dog Park offers both "Parking Lot" and "Street" parking options. While a limited number of off-street parking spaces are available directly within Joslyn Park, ample street parking can often be found in the surrounding residential areas. The park's position within a residential area also means it is easily reachable for many locals via walking or cycling.

The Herb Katz Dog Park maintains extensive operating hours, generally open from 7:00 AM to 8:30 PM on weekdays and 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM on weekends. These broad hours provide ample flexibility for dog owners to visit in the mornings, afternoons, or evenings. However, it is crucial for visitors to be aware of the scheduled maintenance closures: the park is "closed for maintenance on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM." This regular upkeep is essential for ensuring the cleanliness and safety of the park facilities. While user reviews mention occasional delays in opening times due to maintenance crews, the scheduled closures are a consistent part of the park's operation. It is always advisable to check the City of Santa Monica's official Parks and Recreation website for the most current operating hours and any temporary closures due to weather or unforeseen circumstances.

Its integration within Joslyn Park means visitors can also access other amenities that the larger park offers, such as playgrounds, basketball courts, and picnic tables, allowing for a more comprehensive outing for families. The clear address and its well-known status as Santa Monica's preferred dog park make Herb Katz Dog Park a straightforward and convenient destination for locals seeking off-leash fun for their canine companions.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a public recreational facility managed by the City of Santa Monica, the Herb Katz Dog Park does not offer commercial promotions or special discounts in the traditional sense. Its primary purpose is to provide a free and accessible space for the community's dogs and their owners. However, similar to other municipal dog parks in California, there are important regulations and requirements for its use that are essential for all visitors to understand and adhere to.

Key requirements for using Santa Monica dog parks, including Herb Katz Dog Park, typically include:

  • City Dog License: All dogs using Santa Monica's off-leash areas are required to be "licensed Santa Monica pups." An annual City of Santa Monica Dog License Tag must be obtained, requiring proof of current rabies vaccination and spay/neuter certificate.
  • Non-Resident Permits: For non-residents, a "temporary permit" may be available, often an annual non-resident permit from the Santa Monica Animal Shelter for a fee (e.g., $20.01 based on past information), provided proof of a current local address, valid license, and rabies vaccination from their hometown.
  • Owner Supervision: Owners must remain present and in control of their dogs at all times within the off-leash area, keeping them in sight.
  • Waste Removal: Owners are legally required to immediately clean up and dispose of their dog's waste in designated receptacles.
  • Aggressive Behavior: Dogs exhibiting aggressive behavior are not permitted and must be promptly removed from the park. Users note that while most regulars are respectful, occasional "outsiders" with "untagged dogs who are unneutered" can "cause chaos and aggression," emphasizing the need for owner vigilance.
  • No Food or Treats: For safety, food and treats are typically prohibited inside the off-leash areas.
  • Leash Requirement: Dogs must be leashed when entering and exiting the fenced off-leash areas and in parking lots.
These rules are crucial for maintaining a safe, clean, and harmonious environment for all users, and non-compliance can result in citations.

While there are no direct "promotions," the City of Santa Monica's Department of Recreation and Arts (or similar department) may occasionally host pet-related community events or workshops in local parks. It is always recommended to consult the official City of Santa Monica website or local community calendars for announcements regarding such events, policy updates, or temporary park closures.

Its suitability for locals stems from several key factors that directly address the needs and desires of pet owners in this Westside community.

Firstly, the park's generous 1.25-acre size and its crucial division into "separate large and small dog sections" are paramount. This thoughtful design ensures that dogs of all sizes and play styles can enjoy a safe and appropriate environment. For local owners with smaller or more timid dogs, the dedicated small dog area provides immense peace of mind, while larger dogs have ample space to run freely and expend their energy, which is vital for their physical and mental well-being in an urban setting.

Our favorite place to go!! Supersedes all other dog parks in Santa Monica. The upside is there’s regulars that come here at certain times so your dog can get acquainted with the same dog regularly and have friends.!! The downside is there are outsiders, not from Santa Monica with untagged dogs who are unneutered as well sometimes and completely cause chaos and aggression towards other dogs . It’s a 50-50 here. Some days are good. Some days are crazy.!

I’ve had some bad experiences at dog parks, and this dog park 8 out of 10. It’s really big, which is great for getting the energy out with your dog. There were a few heated moments I witnessed with other dogs, which isn’t ideal, but I guess that’s to be expected at a dog park. But overall, really nice people, lots of water, scoopers, nice vibe.

My dog loves this place. I enjoy coming here on my work from home days. I can relax and work from my phone while keeping an eye on my dog because all the benches are at the top of the park, so you can see everything. My dog loves the tunnels and the ramp. I especially love this park for afternoons because of all the shade.

Best dog park in Venice. Loads of space for larger dogs to run, water fountains and a wood chip play area. The park is on a slant so dogs tire quickly when running up and down the little hill.
