Introduction / Overview

Kennedy Dells Dog Park is a prominent feature within the larger Kennedy Dells County Park, managed by the Rockland County Park System. Located in New City, NY, this dedicated off-leash area provides a crucial space for dogs to socialize and exercise in a controlled and safe environment. The dog park itself is a significant draw, but it’s also important to recognize its integration into a 179-acre county park that offers a variety of recreational opportunities for human visitors as well.

The park's history is quite interesting, once being owned by the renowned movie producer Adolph Zukor. Acquired by Rockland County in phases during the 1960s and 70s, it has evolved into a well-developed county park with diverse topography, from heavily wooded areas to more open spaces. The dog park, specifically, is a "big dog park," offering ample room for dogs to run and play. It aims to foster a community setting where both dogs and their owners can gather, socialize, and observe the interaction of groups of dogs at play.

What truly sets Kennedy Dells Dog Park apart is its dual appeal: a dedicated off-leash space for dogs combined with access to extensive natural trails within the wider park. As one reviewer mentioned, "Before going to the dog park, us and our dog usually walking in the trail. Beautiful woods scenery and big dog park." This allows for varied activities, from vigorous off-leash playtime to more serene, on-leash walks through scenic woodlands. The park's commitment to providing a safe, clean, and engaging environment makes it a highly valued amenity for dog owners in New City and beyond.

Location and Accessibility

Kennedy Dells Dog Park is conveniently located on Zukor Rd, New City, NY 10956, USA. This places it centrally within Rockland County, making it easily accessible for residents of New City and surrounding towns. The park is part of the larger Kennedy Dells County Park, which has a main entrance easily identifiable.

Accessibility is a key advantage for local users. The park offers "ample parking" at the main parking lot, making it hassle-free for visitors arriving by car. From the parking lot, visitors can easily access both the dog park area and the extensive network of trails within the wider Kennedy Dells County Park. The park is open year-round, typically from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM, providing flexibility for dog owners to visit at various times of the day, accommodating different schedules.

While the dog park is a dedicated off-leash area, it's important to note that dogs must be leashed on the trails outside the designated dog run. This ensures safety for all park users, including hikers and those enjoying other passive recreational activities. The clear signage within the park helps guide visitors to the dog run and informs them of the rules. The convenient location and plentiful parking make Kennedy Dells Dog Park a practical and attractive destination for dog owners throughout Rockland County, encouraging frequent visits for exercise and socialization.

Services Offered

  • Fenced Off-Leash Area: Kennedy Dells Dog Park provides a secure, fenced environment where dogs can safely run and play without a leash. This is the primary service, crucial for canine exercise and mental well-being.
  • Separate Sections for Dog Sizes: The park features two separate sections: one for small dogs (30 lbs and under) and another for large dogs (over 30 lbs). This design ensures that dogs can play safely with companions of similar size and energy levels, reducing the risk of accidental injury or stress.
  • Socialization Hub: The park acts as a community gathering place, allowing dogs to interact with various breeds and temperaments, fostering improved social skills. It also provides an opportunity for dog owners to connect and build relationships with fellow pet enthusiasts in the area.
  • Access to Extensive Hiking Trails: While the dog park is off-leash, the surrounding Kennedy Dells County Park offers "beautiful woods scenery" and trails, including the 1.4-mile white-blazed Bridle Path and the 1.4-mile yellow-blazed Fitness Trail, where leashed dogs are welcome. This allows for a diverse outing experience.

Features / Highlights

  • Large, Dedicated Dog Park: Recognized as a "big dog park," it provides ample space for dogs to run, chase, and play, allowing them to expend significant energy.
  • Dual Sections for All Dogs: The presence of separate areas for small and large dogs is a significant highlight, catering to the needs of different canine sizes and ensuring safer play.
  • Scenic Trail Access: Beyond the dog park, the surrounding Kennedy Dells County Park boasts "beautiful woods scenery" and trails with "lots of elevation changes and steps down and up," offering varied landscapes for on-leash walks.
  • Benches and Picnic Tables: The dog park includes benches and picnic tables, providing comfortable seating for owners to relax and supervise their dogs.

  • Restrooms On-Site: Public restrooms are conveniently located near the parking lot, providing essential facilities for human visitors.
  • Water Availability (Note): While past reviews mention "no water provided" directly at the dog park itself, some official sources indicate "drinking fountains have attached dog water fountains" in the larger park, so it's advisable for visitors to confirm or bring their own water, especially for the dog park area.
  • Handicapped Accessible: Portions of Kennedy Dells County Park, including restrooms and picnic tables, are noted as handicapped accessible, making it more inclusive for all visitors.

Older trail that must be beautiful when trees in full bloom. Lots of elevation changes and steps down and up. Multiple places to sit. Only bathrooms by parking lot. Originally set up with stretching and exercise stations. Signage dated 1975 and stations are in disrepair and for most part unusable.

It was the hottest weekend in January and beautiful for a walk, so we decided to take Lexie to the dog park for the first time since moving to New City. Lexie had an amazing time and met lots of new friends both human & canine. BTW, so did my wife & I. The park is a very spacious fenced area for multiple dogs, it has benches for the humans to sit & relax, it has a double gate system and there’s also a poop bag station should you forget yours. There’s ample parking and is a nice hike to the dog park from the parking lot, so be ready for a nice walk. I also recommend maybe boots depending on what type of weather there’s been or old sneakers because they might get a little muddy or pick up lots of dirt. The same with the close you’re wearing since some of the new friends you meet might be very happy to see you and jump all over you. Lexie was pooped out and as soon as we got home she went straight to bed.
