Arlington/Arkwright Off Leash Dog Park is conveniently situated at 400 Arlington Ave E, St Paul, MN 55130, USA. This location places it on St. Paul's East Side, specifically east of the North End neighborhood and west of the golf course homes in the Payne-Phalen neighborhood. Its urban setting makes it easily accessible for residents of downtown St. Paul and its eastern suburbs, including Maplewood and North St. Paul.
The park is part of the larger Arlington Arkwright Park, which spans over 20 acres and includes various athletic fields and a skate park. For dog park visitors, accessing the off-leash area is straightforward. The most common access point is via the main parking lot off Arkwright Street North, near the baseball field. From there, a paved path leads south directly to the double-gated entrance of the dog park. This clear pathway ensures safe entry and exit for dogs and their owners.
The dog park itself boasts multiple entrance areas, providing convenient access from different sides of the park. These include main and secondary entrances near the tennis courts (closest to the parking lot), two entrances along Arkwright Street, and a final entrance at the southeast corner near Clark Street. Each entrance is equipped with a swing gate that must be closed upon entering and exiting, crucial for maintaining the security of the fenced area. The park is generally open daily from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM, offering extensive hours for visitors. As a public park operated by the City of St. Paul, it is generally free to use, though users are encouraged to be familiar with city dog park rules.
Arlington/Arkwright Off Leash Dog Park provides essential services and features designed for free, off-leash canine recreation:
- Fenced Off-Leash Area: The primary service is a fully fenced 4.5-acre designated space where dogs can legally and safely run and play without a leash.
- Wooded Trails and Open Spaces: The park offers a combination of winding trails through well-shaded wooded areas and larger open grassy sections, providing diverse environments for dogs to explore and exercise.
- Multiple Entrances: The park features several double-gated entrances for convenient access from various points, enhancing usability and safety.
- Benches and Picnic Tables: Seating options are available in common areas, often shaded, allowing owners to rest and supervise their dogs.
- Trash Cans: Waste receptacles are provided for convenient disposal of dog waste. Users are expected to bring their own waste bags, as they are not provided on-site.
- Space for Socialization: The park's design encourages interaction among dogs, offering sufficient room for group play and individual exploration.
- Public Access: As a municipal park, it offers free access to licensed and vaccinated dogs (with owners adhering to city rules).
Arlington/Arkwright Off Leash Dog Park offers several features and highlights that make it a notable spot for dog owners in St. Paul:
- Fully Fenced Perimeter: The entire 4.5-acre off-leash area is completely fenced, providing a secure environment where dogs can run freely without owners worrying about them wandering off. This is a significant peace-of-mind feature for many.
- Diverse Terrain: Unlike some flat, open dog parks, Arlington/Arkwright boasts a varied landscape. It features wooded trails with gentle slopes, offering engaging sniffing opportunities and a sense of "wilderness" within the city, alongside larger flat grassy areas perfect for games of fetch.
- Wooded and Shady Areas: The presence of large, established trees provides ample shade, making the park more comfortable for both dogs and humans, especially during Minnesota's sunny summer months.
- Generous Size: At 4.5 acres, it's considered a good-sized park, especially for an urban setting. While "smaller than some" regional parks, its layout with wooded areas makes it "feel bigger" and offers plenty of space for activity without feeling overcrowded.
- Established Walking Trails: The park features established wide walking trails, as well as smaller spur trails, making it easy to navigate and explore different sections with your dog. Some reviewers even note the dirt on the trails is almost like sand, which helps prevent excessive mud when wet.
- Community Vibe: Despite some individual challenges noted in reviews, the park generally attracts a community of dog owners, providing opportunities for social interaction for both pets and their people.
- Urban Oasis: It's described as a "lovely little oasis on the east side," providing a valuable natural escape within a residential neighborhood, offering a convenient natural setting without a long drive.
As a public off-leash dog park managed by the City of St. Paul Parks and Recreation, Arlington/Arkwright Off Leash Dog Park does not offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the traditional sense (e.g., discounts, loyalty programs). Access to the park is generally free for all licensed and vaccinated dogs whose owners adhere to city dog park rules.
The "offer" here is the provision of a free, publicly accessible, and well-maintained off-leash area. There are no permits or annual fees specifically for Arlington/Arkwright Dog Park, unlike some regional parks (e.g., Three Rivers Park District parks) which require them.
However, visitors should be aware of the general rules and expectations for St. Paul city dog parks, which are a form of "terms of service" to ensure everyone's enjoyment:
- Dogs must be licensed and vaccinated.
- Owners must clean up after their dogs (waste bags are not provided).
- Dogs must be in sight and under voice control at all times.
- No aggressive dogs allowed.
- Female dogs in heat and puppies under four months old are prohibited.
- A maximum of three dogs per handler is typically allowed.
- Children under 16 should be supervised.
- No food, dog treats, cigarettes, or glass containers are allowed in the park.

It meets the crucial need for accessible off-leash areas, particularly for residents on the East Side.

This safety feature is combined with a diverse landscape that includes both open grassy areas for energetic play and well-shaded wooded trails for exploration and sniffing. This variety keeps visits interesting and caters to different canine personalities and energy levels, allowing for both rigorous exercise and mental stimulation. The "feels bigger" aspect due to the wooded trails is a significant draw, making it feel less like a city park and more like a natural escape.

Nov 12, 2024 · K ELovely park with trails. Smaller than some but the wooded areas make it feel bigger. Well maintained except for the benches needing a bit of work. Lovely little oasis on the east side.
May 18, 2024 · Alicia LaBrosseIt’s hit and miss. The location is great. Large but not too large. Lots of trail options for such a modest park. It’s really the folks that visit that make it problematic. Be it other dog owners or people that wander through with no official dog business. And please don’t bring small children! This is a dog park and not all dogs are familiar or comfortable with small children.
Dec 23, 2024 · Hole botMy dog loves this dog park! Definitely his favorite. The size is perfect in my opinion where it’s not too big but it’s still big if that makes sense. The trails are great and lots of squirrels to chase lol There are two entrances: one by the tennis courts and the other is down the street. I bring my dog here because he loves running around and exploring the wooded areas
Aug 09, 2023 · Erika ParviIt definitely needs more loving care as far as the park as a whole trees are falling down there are hills that should have fencing around them so people or pets don't go to dangerous areas in there etc etc there should be doggy poop bags put in there boxes more often it's just made me feel like an unsafe park
