Ah, yes. The founder of an industry which could single-handedly accomplish the one thing it does right: driving an entire species to extinction and making a quick buck off of it. There is literally nothing else this company can do than that. They waste materials making torture chambers and sell them for next to nothing. They make their clients no real profit when those useless objects are returned less than a month later, after successfully completing their job of killing the crustacean. The animals in question are illegally collected from their natural habitats and are treated with less care than a sack of gravel. Most of them die in the process of transport, robbing their clients of their money, and not to mention robbing the animals or what would’ve been a long life and fulfilling their role as vital parts of their ecosystem. There is no benefitting anyone in this sickening industry except those at the very top of the scheme, and I will never understand why retailers still support them. It hurts the buyers, it hurts the sellers, it hurts the consumers and traumatizes children. It hurts the ecosystem, both the land and the ocean, and it tortures living creatures in the worst ways humanly imaginable. I can’t wait for the day reformers finally take action against them and the hermit crab industry as a whole. I pray on their demise. I hope them and anyone who willingly associates with them a life as awful as they inflict on those unfortunate animals. 🩷

Situated at 145 Coxs Ave, the store is easily accessible to local residents seeking unique pets or related accessories. The store is known for its focus on hermit crabs, providing a range of habitats, toys, and supplies tailored to these fascinating creatures.
Shell Shanty Hermit Crab Co. operates Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. On weekends, the store remains closed, allowing the team to focus on restocking and preparing for the upcoming week. The store’s environment is designed to cater specifically to hermit crabs, offering a selection of tanks, decorations, food, and other essential items that create a comfortable living space for these crustaceans.
One of the standout features of Shell Shanty Hermit Crab Co. is its specialization in hermit crabs. The store provides a variety of hermit crab species, each with unique care requirements. While Shell Shanty Hermit Crab Co. has its niche in the pet market, it has faced significant criticism from customers and animal welfare advocates. Many reviews highlight concerns about the treatment of hermit crabs, with some describing the store’s practices as inhumane. Some customers have expressed frustration over the short lifespan of hermit crabs purchased from the store, suggesting that the animals may be stressed or mistreated during transportation or housing.
Customers have also raised ethical concerns about the sourcing of hermit crabs. Several reviews mention that the store may be contributing to the decline of wild hermit crab populations by selling animals collected directly from their natural habitats. These practices, according to some critics, not only harm the hermit crab population but also disrupt local ecosystems.
Despite these criticisms, Shell Shanty Hermit Crab Co. continues to operate and attract customers seeking unique pet options. For those considering purchasing a hermit crab, it is important to research alternative retailers who prioritize animal welfare and sustainable practices. Additionally, potential buyers should thoroughly understand the care requirements of hermit crabs before committing to their ownership.
Shell Shanty Hermit Crab Co. serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and ethical sourcing in the pet industry. While the store offers a unique selection of products, its practices have raised significant concerns among animal advocates and customers alike. For those interested in hermit crabs, exploring other retailers or adopting animals from shelters may be more compassionate choices.
