To begin, I think the animals at Petco could be taken care of better. For example, there was a ball python (pictured) with several pieces of stuck shed indicating a probable humidity issue. Abundant amounts of parakeets and bearded dragons were kept in small enclosures. Other than that the enclosures and terrariums seemed clean. However, I think if animals are being sold then their well-being should be prioritized. The store was clean and well organized. We found the majority of what we were looking for and employee service was good.

Petco Introduce
For local residents in Waukesha, Wisconsin, searching under the category "Pet Store Near Me," the Petco located at 1240 W Sunset Dr #102 has garnered mixed reviews, with notable concerns raised about the welfare of certain animals sold within the store, particularly reptiles, birds, and fish. While one reviewer acknowledged positive aspects such as store cleanliness, organization, and employee service, they also pointed out potential inadequacies in the living conditions provided for some animals. Another reviewer shared a severely negative experience specifically related to the health and quality of fish purchased from this location, leading to the death of their existing healthy fish and significant disappointment with the store's policies and staff communication regarding live animal purchases.
One customer who visited this Petco location expressed concerns about the living conditions of some of the animals: "To begin, I think the animals at Petco could be taken care of better. We found the majority of what we were looking for and employee service was good." This review highlights a potential discrepancy between the overall cleanliness and organization of the store and the specific care provided to some of the animals. The observation of a ball python with stuck shed strongly suggests a potential issue with the humidity levels in its enclosure, which can lead to health problems for reptiles. The reviewer's opinion that the enclosures for the parakeets and bearded dragons were too small raises ethical concerns about the space provided for these animals, especially if they are intended for sale. While acknowledging positive aspects like cleanliness and employee service, the reviewer's emphasis on prioritizing animal well-being serves as a critical point for potential customers, particularly those who are passionate about ethical treatment of animals in retail settings.
In stark contrast, another customer shared a deeply negative experience specifically related to purchasing fish: "If I could give no star I would. I have never bought fish from Petco before and now I regret doing so. I had two goldfish that I had for over a year and a half. They were babies when we got them and fairly large when my kids decided to get them some friends. So we stopped at the Petco in waukesha and bought 2 fish to bring home. I bought them on March 8th. March 11th the first one died. By March 18th both were dead. One of my goldfish (again that I had for over a year and a half) also died yesterday March 19th and the other one is sick, wont eat, has white bumps on its fins, which from what I am reading is “ich”. My fish NEVER got sick and were very healthy until I added these new fish into my tank. So I am now trying to treat the only fish we have left and have upset/sad kids. AND OF COURSE I didn't know they had a return policy as I have NEVER in my life bought fish from there. The lady at the store who got them out the tank for us nor the lady who checked me out told me anything about the return policy so I cant even get my money back or if I wanted to, which I don't, get more fish for my kids because they are gone in the trash outside…but they WERE QUICK to try and sell me a $400 tank versus telling me about the policy. First 2 photos were on March 20 at 1am. The last 2 were taken at 8am. THATS how fast this is spreading. I will never get fish from Petco again and am highly disappointed. ☹️" This detailed account raises serious concerns about the health and quality of the fish sold at this Petco location. The rapid death of the newly purchased fish and the subsequent illness and death of the reviewer's previously healthy goldfish strongly suggest that the new fish were diseased and introduced pathogens into the existing tank. The reviewer's frustration is compounded by the alleged failure of the store staff to inform them about the fish return policy at the time of purchase, while purportedly being eager to sell a significantly more expensive item. The rapid spread of the illness ("ich") further emphasizes the severity of the health issues with the purchased fish. This experience has understandably led to significant disappointment and a vow from the customer to avoid purchasing fish from this Petco location in the future.
Based on these reviews, the environment of the Petco in Waukesha, WI, appears to be clean and well-organized in terms of retail space. However, there are concerns raised about the adequacy of the living conditions for some of the animals being sold, specifically regarding enclosure sizes and proper environmental control (humidity for reptiles). Additionally, the health of the fish sold at this location is a significant concern, with one customer reporting the introduction of a deadly disease into their healthy aquarium after purchasing fish from this store.
As a Petco store, the services offered likely include the sale of a wide variety of pet supplies for different types of animals (dogs, cats, fish, small animals, birds, reptiles), including food, treats, toys, bedding, grooming tools, and health and wellness products. They may also offer live animals for sale, as indicated by the reviews mentioning ball pythons, parakeets, bearded dragons, and goldfish. Other potential services commonly found at Petco stores, such as pet grooming, veterinary clinics (often third-party), and dog training, are not specifically mentioned in these reviews for this location, so their availability cannot be confirmed.
The features of this Petco location are somewhat contradictory based on the provided feedback. A potential positive is the cleanliness and organization of the store, as well as generally good employee service (mentioned by one reviewer, though the fish-buying experience contradicts this somewhat regarding policy disclosure). However, significant negative features include potential inadequacies in animal welfare for certain species (reptiles and birds) and serious concerns about the health and quality of the fish sold, along with a lack of transparency regarding return policies for live animals (at least in the case reported).
There is no specific information about promotional offers in either of the provided reviews for this Waukesha Petco. As a national chain, Petco typically has various promotions, sales events, and a loyalty program ("Petco Pals Rewards"). Local users are advised to check the official Petco website or the store's local advertisements for any current promotions or discounts that might be available at the Waukesha location.
In conclusion, for local pet owners in Waukesha, Wisconsin, searching for a "Pet Store Near Me," the Petco at 1240 W Sunset Dr #102 presents a mixed picture. While the store may be clean and organized with generally good employee service in some areas, there are notable concerns regarding the welfare and living conditions of certain animals, particularly reptiles and birds, and significant issues reported with the health and quality of the fish sold, coupled with alleged lack of transparency about return policies for live animals. Potential customers, especially those considering purchasing live animals, should be aware of these reported issues and may want to inquire specifically about the store's animal care practices and policies before making a purchase. For those seeking general pet supplies, the store may still be a viable option, but the concerns raised about animal welfare and fish health warrant careful consideration.

Mar 20, 2024 · Stephanie WeareThey always have the dog food we use, and Becks, at the grooming salon is fantastic. We were so well taken care of when one of our little guys was nearing the end of his life. Becks was compassionate and loving and she groomed him perfectly. That's not something one easily forgets. We still take our other little guy to her and she snuggles and loves on him, and we just couldn't ask for more.
Aug 30, 2022 · The Death MidwifeAnimal enclosures in this store are cleaner than most other Petco stores, the employee that helped me get some shrimp was kind, and actually seemed to care about the lil invertebrates, asking about how long my tank has been set up, size, plants, etc. She did her due diligence. The staff at this store is friendly but they do seem to be a bit understaffed in retail but they always do the best they can to take care of everyone as efficiently as possible. I'm not usually a fan of big box stores but this one is definitely better than your average Petco! There aren't dead fish in all the tanks, the small animal enclosures are clean and don't smell bad. They seem to care about their livestock.
