Many birds show symptoms of severe respiratory illness. Adopted a bird with a puff to them thinking they were relaxing. Turned out to be a severe respiratory infection and they died 3 days later. I have a photo of said bird with symptoms of illness IN the cage at Petco. They then proceeded to blame me for her death and told me I was not allowed to adopt another bird despite the evidence that it was their fault. My other 2 birds adopted from other pet stores have been fine for almost *2* years now. Odd how the only issues I have been having with birds has been from this specific store. I will not be told I am a bad owner and I am not allowed to adopt a pet if almost every animal I have seen at Petco has severe issues. This isn't new, I see many hamsters with wet tail at this location as well. DO NOT buy animals from this location. Period.

Petco Introduce
For pet owners in Maple Grove, Minnesota, Petco located at 8010 Wedgewood Ln N is a prominent option within the "Pet Store Near Me" category, offering a wide array of pet supplies and live animals. However, recent customer reviews present a starkly divided perspective on the store's operations, particularly concerning the health and welfare of the animals sold. One review raises alarming allegations about the prevalence of severe illnesses among birds and hamsters, directly linking a fatal respiratory infection in a recently adopted bird to the store's conditions and staff negligence. This review strongly advises against purchasing animals from this location. Conversely, another customer offers positive feedback regarding the store's consistent inventory and the availability of staff for assistance with general pet supplies. This divergence in experiences necessitates a detailed and objective introduction that carefully considers both the serious welfare concerns and the positive aspects related to product availability and staff support for supplies.
The environment of the Petco in Maple Grove, based on the critical review, is depicted as one where animals, specifically birds and hamsters, exhibit signs of significant illness. The reviewer describes birds showing symptoms of severe respiratory illness, including puffiness (initially mistaken for relaxation), which tragically turned out to be a fatal infection. The presence of a photo documenting these symptoms within the bird's cage at Petco provides a disturbing visual account. Additionally, the reviewer notes seeing "many hamsters with wet tail," a serious bacterial infection in hamsters often associated with stress and poor living conditions. These observations suggest potential issues with the store's animal husbandry practices and the overall health environment for small animals. In contrast, the positive review focuses on the retail aspect, mentioning "good inventory and stock" and "shelves are always on full," indicating a well-maintained and stocked environment for pet supplies.
The services offered at the Petco in Maple Grove are typical of a large pet retail chain. These include the sale of live animals (birds, hamsters, and likely fish, reptiles, and other small pets), a wide selection of pet food and supplies for various species, and potentially grooming services or in-store veterinary clinics (though these are not specifically mentioned in the reviews for this location). The negative review details the experience of adopting a bird, highlighting the store's involvement in animal sales and adoptions. The positive review focuses on the retail aspect, mentioning the availability of dog face masks and the helpfulness of staff in locating products. This suggests that the store functions as a standard pet supply retailer while also engaging in the sale of live animals.
Several features of this Petco location emerge from the customer reviews, presenting a mixed assessment. A major negative feature is the alleged poor health conditions of the animals, particularly birds and hamsters, with one customer providing a firsthand account of adopting a severely ill bird that died shortly after. The store's reaction to this incident, reportedly blaming the adopter and prohibiting future adoptions despite evidence of pre-existing illness, is also a significant negative feature concerning their customer service and accountability regarding animal health. Conversely, a positive feature highlighted by another customer is the "good inventory and stock," ensuring that needed pet supplies are usually available. The "staff is always available for assistance" is also mentioned as a positive aspect of their service for retail customers.
The stark contrast between the two reviews paints a concerning picture regarding the animal welfare standards at this specific Petco location in Maple Grove. The serious allegations of widespread illness among small animals and the negative experience of the adopter raise significant ethical questions about the store's animal care practices. While the positive feedback about product availability and staff assistance for supplies is valuable for customers seeking retail items, the potential risks associated with purchasing live animals from this location, as strongly cautioned by one reviewer, cannot be ignored. This necessitates a careful consideration of priorities for local pet owners: those primarily seeking supplies may find the store adequate, while those considering animal adoption should be aware of the serious health concerns raised.
The provided reviews do not contain any specific details about current promotional offers or loyalty programs at the Petco in Maple Grove. Large pet retail chains like Petco typically have ongoing promotions, seasonal sales, and loyalty programs that offer discounts or rewards to frequent shoppers. However, the strong negative review might overshadow any potential savings for customers concerned about animal welfare. The positive review does not mention any promotions but focuses on the convenience of product availability and helpful staff for general inquiries.
In conclusion, the Petco located at 8010 Wedgewood Ln N in Maple Grove presents a dichotomy of customer experiences. While one reviewer praises the store for its consistent inventory and helpful staff regarding pet supplies, another provides a deeply troubling account of severe illness among the animals, particularly birds and hamsters, and criticizes the store's handling of a fatal adoption. This raises significant concerns about the animal welfare standards at this specific location. Local pet owners considering purchasing supplies may find the store adequate based on one review, but those contemplating animal adoption are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and consider the serious health risks highlighted by another customer. A balanced perspective requires acknowledging both the potential convenience for retail shopping and the deeply concerning allegations regarding animal health and the store's response to related issues.

This is probably one of the best grooming experience we've had! Thank you Beth. You're awesome and the service you provided for Demi was exceptional!
Feb 06, 2025 · Kevin ThienAight, so here's how this went down. I've been to a few Petcos in my day, and none while I was shopping for someone else - shout out my fellow instacart shoppers. You da real MVPs, man. Seriously, respect these people. They deal with crazy, no, not "Oh, that was crazy Steve, you gotta go" type craycray. Crazy like fighting an alligator after being awake for 96 hours on some wolf of wall street ish type crazy. Anyways, I'm searching for this dog food, right. Kid you not, up and down the same 3 Isles for 25 minutes before I broke down n asked someone. THEY HAD TROUBLE TOO! long story short, they got me settled not long after, and I was on my way to schlepping that puppy chow to the customer. Solid service. Great employees. Maddening layout. Or, it was. Could have changed by now. That's enough now. RIP GusGus. You were a great Golden buddy. 😁 🥲
Mar 26, 2025 · Jared WilderThis store sold me rotten night crawlers....which I found out when I stuck my hand through the stinky bodies. Then made me drive 40 minutes to return the stank carcasses, as they can't do refunds over the phone. NEVER SHOPPING HERE again. Way to waste my time and money Petco.
