While this should not come as a surprise to anyone in the reptile hobby, I went in here to see if they had any adequate hides for my young bearded dragon a couple of weeks ago and they did not. Their shelves were a disorganized cluttered mess. Their "live" crickets were not quite that, and any staff that wasn't the cashier were nowhere to be found. However, that is not the main concern here. The problem here is the abhorrent conditions upon which their reptiles live in, their humidity is non-existent and has clearly led to shedding problems. They cohab their baby bearded dragons and adult leopard geckos, which is terrible for their health as their known to fight to the point of losing toes or tails, and use an extensive amount od reptile carpet which os known to harbor and make the growth of bacteria very easy. This makes it clear that Petco does not care for their reptiles as it is a common practice among their locations.

Welcome to Petco
Petco, located at 2277 Upton Dr #706 in Virginia Beach, operates under the platform category "Pet Store Near Me," indicating its role as a local retailer providing goods and potentially services related to pet care. Based on recent customer reviews, experiences at this particular Petco location appear to be varied, with notable concerns raised alongside positive feedback regarding certain aspects of the store.
One detailed review focuses on the reptile section of the store. The customer, experienced in the reptile hobby, reported difficulty finding adequate hides for a young bearded dragon, suggesting a potential lack of suitable products for specific reptile needs. Furthermore, this reviewer described the store's shelves as a "disorganized cluttered mess," which could make the shopping experience challenging for customers trying to locate specific items. The quality of the "live" crickets was also questioned, with the reviewer stating they were "not quite that," implying they may not have been alive or in good condition. Additionally, the reviewer noted a lack of available staff beyond the cashier, potentially hindering customers seeking assistance or information.
The primary concern highlighted in this review, however, pertains to the conditions in which the store's reptiles are housed. The reviewer described the humidity levels as "non-existent," which they believe has led to shedding problems in the reptiles. More alarmingly, the review points out the cohabitation of "baby bearded dragons and adult leopard geckos," a practice deemed detrimental to their health due to the known territorial behavior that can lead to fights and injuries such as lost toes or tails. The extensive use of "reptile carpet" was also criticized as a substrate known to harbor bacteria, further raising concerns about the hygiene and health of the reptiles.
The reviewer concludes this critical assessment by stating that these conditions make it clear that "Petco does not care for their reptiles," suggesting that the observed practices are not isolated incidents but rather a common approach across Petco locations. This raises significant ethical concerns regarding the welfare of the reptiles being housed and sold at this store.
In stark contrast to this negative experience, another reviewer offers a highly positive assessment, stating, "BEST PETCO EVER!!!" This customer specifically praised the store for having "amazing cats" and for taking "very good care of animals." They also lauded the "amazing service" and the "very nice people," concluding with a strong intention to return. This review presents a completely different perspective, focusing on the positive aspects of the store, particularly concerning the care of the cats (presumably available for adoption) and the quality of customer service.
The significant discrepancy between these two reviews highlights the potential for varied experiences at this Petco location. While one customer encountered issues with the reptile section, including product availability, store organization, and concerning animal husbandry practices, another found the store to excel in animal care and customer service, particularly in relation to the cats.
Given these conflicting accounts, it is challenging to provide a definitive overview of the environment and services at this Petco. The negative review paints a picture of disorganization and potentially inadequate care for reptiles, while the positive review suggests a well-maintained environment where animals are well-cared for and staff are helpful. Potential customers may experience different levels of satisfaction depending on their specific needs and the sections of the store they interact with.
In terms of services, Petco stores typically offer a range beyond just retail sales. These can include pet grooming services, veterinary clinics (often third-party partnerships operating within the store), dog training classes, and adoption events in collaboration with local animal shelters. The positive review's mention of "amazing cats" suggests that this location likely participates in cat adoption programs. However, neither review provides detailed information about the availability or quality of other potential services such as grooming or veterinary care at this specific Virginia Beach Petco.
Features that generally characterize Petco as a national chain include a wide selection of pet food, supplies, and accessories for various types of animals. They often carry popular brands and may have their own private label products. Petco also typically has a loyalty program to reward repeat customers. However, the disorganized shelves mentioned in one review might detract from the ease of accessing these features at this particular location. The presence of cats for adoption, as highlighted in the positive review, is another common feature of many Petco stores, aiming to connect adoptable animals with loving homes.
Promotional information is also absent from the provided reviews. As a large retail chain, Petco frequently offers various promotions, discounts, and special offers, often advertised in their weekly flyers, on their website, and in-store. These promotions can cover specific brands of food, seasonal items, or services like grooming. Customers interested in current promotions at the Virginia Beach Petco are advised to check the official Petco website or contact the store directly at (757) 716-6128 or +1 757-716-6128.
In conclusion, Petco at 2277 Upton Dr #706 in Virginia Beach is a local pet store that offers pet supplies and facilitates cat adoptions. However, customer experiences appear to vary significantly. One reviewer raised serious concerns about the conditions and care of reptiles, as well as store organization and staff availability in that section. Conversely, another customer had an overwhelmingly positive experience, particularly regarding the care of cats and the quality of service. Potential customers are advised to consider these contrasting viewpoints and perhaps visit the store themselves to assess whether it meets their specific needs and expectations for pet care and supplies. Those specifically interested in reptiles may want to carefully evaluate the conditions and product selection based on the concerns raised in one of the reviews.

Jan 25, 2025 · Raven LoveI was fired today, I don’t work there, but as a customer they fired me. It was my second time bringing my mixed pound puppy (husky mix) about 43 lbs maybe 1.5-2 yrs old. Friendliest dog I’ve met. The first time we brought her, they claim she tore up the crate they put her in and advised(demanded) we do the VIP service. They also upgraded her long hair. The only dogs that get short are like pits and such. Anyway, the supervisor comes out when I bring her the second time after I start asking questions about how many times they make owner upgrade their service, she looks at me kinda weird and I say, let’s say out of 100 customer…..about 50. I was stunned that she admitted 50% of the time they force customers to pay $16 for their VIP service. I tried to tell her it was the kennels they use, if the dogs are tearing them up and that’s when she got into her feeling. “I don’t think we’ll be able to satisfy your needs”. Ma’am I’m just trying to figure out why I’m paying a higher premium for the service. Back back story, I self groomed my previous dog, 100lbs German Shepherd for 11 years, it would take me about an hour when I did it. This new dog I did a couple of times and takes half the time. I just don’t have time anymore. But I don’t want to pay 3 times the amount. Corporate shops are the problem, not the staff. If they supplied the right gear, the dogs wouldn’t have an opportunity to get hurt in the kennels. End of rant shop local find family run shops.
Mar 10, 2025 · Maddrick99I’ve taken my Australian Shepherd here for grooming quite a few times but the last time I brought him in he saw someone named Bogey J. There are specific notes on his profile for how he should be groomed but she ended up shaving him. It’s damaged his coat so bad that it has not grown back the same and is fuzzy rather than silky like it was before. It also grows different directions now. It’s devastating and just think these groomers need to be held accountable.
Mar 22, 2025 · Brianne GhizAbsolute WASTE of my time. I booked a grooming appointment for my dog over 3 weeks ago- got no less than 5 reminders to bring rabies paperwork. And then they denied me service when I said my dog is on seizure meds because they need paperwork with official letter head from her vets office stating she is cleared to be groomed. Absolute trash. I even advised it had been over 5 years and the meds are just precautionary. Do not waste your time going to this place.
