Three years ago I had gotten a Rat Terrier/Australian Cattle Dog mix from them and of course paid a designer dog price. One DNA test later revealed she鈥檚 mostly a Rat/Jack Russel mix with a sprinkling of other toy breeds, even part Ford Fiesta. Oh and she is about as inbred as Charles II. That being said, my inbred little mongrel has been a wonderful companion, and is perfectly healthy and free of mental defect, which is the important thing.

Hug-A-Pup Introduce
Introducing Hug-A-Pup, a pet store located at 6931 Calumet Ave, Hammond, IN 46324, USA. Operating under the platform category of "Pet Store Near Me," Hug-A-Pup appears to specialize in the sale of puppies. Based on the limited customer reviews available, the experiences have been varied, highlighting both positive outcomes in terms of companionship and health of the purchased dogs, as well as some concerns regarding breed accuracy and pricing. This introduction aims to provide an objective overview of the store's environment, services (as implied by the reviews), features, and any promotional aspects that can be inferred from the customer feedback.
The "environment" of Hug-A-Pup, based on the reviews, is primarily focused on the interaction between staff and potential buyers, as well as the condition and demeanor of the puppies offered for sale. One customer who purchased a puppy three years prior noted that their mixed-breed dog, while a "wonderful companion" and "perfectly healthy," was acquired at a "designer dog price," suggesting a retail environment where specific breeds or mixes are marketed at a premium. Another customer who recently purchased a Jack Russell puppy named Ruby had a positive experience with "Sue" and her staff, describing them as "great." This indicates a customer service aspect to their environment, with staff available to assist potential buyers through the process of acquiring a puppy. The fact that the puppy Ruby was described as "very happy and healthy" suggests that the animals within their care are, at least in some instances, maintained in good condition.
The primary "service" offered by Hug-A-Pup is the sale of puppies. The reviews mention the acquisition of a Rat Terrier/Australian Cattle Dog mix and a Jack Russell puppy, indicating that they offer a variety of breeds or mixed breeds. The interaction with staff, such as "Sue," who was helpful with "multiple phone calls," suggests that they provide customer support and guidance to potential buyers even before a purchase is made. The process involves selecting a puppy and presumably completing the necessary paperwork and payment. While not explicitly stated, it can be inferred that they ensure the puppies are available for viewing and interaction by prospective owners. The positive outcome of a "very happy and healthy puppy" being brought home suggests a level of initial care provided to the animals before sale.
Several "features" can be gleaned from the limited reviews. One notable aspect is the pricing strategy, with at least one customer feeling they paid a "designer dog price" for a mixed breed. This suggests a pricing model that may not always align with the actual breed composition as revealed by DNA testing post-purchase. However, a significant feature highlighted by both reviewers is the positive temperament and health of the puppies acquired. Despite concerns about breed accuracy, the older dog was described as a "wonderful companion" and "perfectly healthy and free of mental defect," which is paramount for any pet owner. The more recently purchased Jack Russell was also described as "very happy and healthy." Another feature appears to be the helpfulness and availability of the staff, particularly "Sue," who was accommodating with phone inquiries and had a supportive team. This customer service aspect can be crucial in the decision-making process for potential puppy buyers.
The "promotional information" for Hug-A-Pup is somewhat mixed based on the available reviews. The positive experiences of acquiring a healthy and happy companion, despite any discrepancies in breed information or pricing perceptions, serve as a form of positive promotion. The willingness of staff to engage with potential buyers and facilitate the purchase process, as seen in the interaction with "Sue," can also attract customers. The focus on having puppies available for purchase is itself a primary promotion for a pet store operating under this model. However, the mention of "designer dog price" for a mixed breed that later DNA testing revealed to be different, along with the somewhat concerning revelation about potential inbreeding ("about as inbred as Charles II," though the dog was healthy), could be seen as negative aspects that might deter some potential buyers who prioritize breed accuracy and ethical breeding practices. The fact that the purchased dogs have been healthy and good companions ultimately serves as the strongest implicit promotion, as the well-being of the animal is the primary concern for most pet owners.
For local users in Hammond, IN, looking to acquire a puppy, Hug-A-Pup is a nearby pet store that offers dogs for sale. The experiences of past customers suggest that while you may find a healthy and happy companion, it is advisable to be diligent in understanding the breed information provided and the associated pricing. The staff, particularly "Sue," appear to be helpful in the purchasing process. However, potential buyers should be aware that the perceived value and breed accuracy may not always align with post-purchase findings. The positive outcomes in terms of the dogs' health and temperament are significant factors to consider. If you are seeking a puppy and value direct interaction with the staff and the availability of animals, Hug-A-Pup is a local option to explore. It may be beneficial to ask detailed questions about the breed lineage and health history of any puppy you are interested in before making a purchase. You can contact them at (773) 327-2050 or +1 773-327-2050, and their address is 6931 Calumet Ave, Hammond, IN 46324, USA, to inquire about their current puppies and purchasing process.

Mar 09, 2025 路 Steven KoweskiI just purchased my beautiful short legged Jack Russell Ruby from Sue. She was great with my multiple phone calls and her staff is great too. I couldn't be happier with the very happy and healthy puppy I brought home. Ruby is beyond happy in her new home and I'm looking forward to many years and loving moments with her. Thank you Sue!!!
Dec 05, 2024 路 jennifer phillipsWe LOVE Hug A Pup! We got all 3 of our babies from there! Our oldest: Australian Herding/Border Collie, our second: Asustrtilian Herding/Border Collie/Mini Aussie/Mini Pinscher and our newest addition: Pomeranian/Rat Terrier! The pups are well taken care of in their first 8 weeks, pre-spoiled and ready to come home when you choose your fur baby! They also come chipped now! We highly recommend Hug A Pup! Here are our babies at their favorite places: the park, beach, and car! Kilo (Large, M, 1.5 y/o), Kali (Medium, F, 1 y/o), and now, Kola (Tiny, F, 9 wks). 馃挋馃┓馃挏
Oct 10, 2024 路 VanessaI have bought two German shepherds from them, one boy and one girl. They are loving, protective, and very energetic, and very smart and healthy. I love hug a pup thank you so much for having these great puppies
Apr 07, 2025 路 Isaiah JenkinsI was quite excited when I bought my dream pup . The owner of the shop was helpful with all of the questions we asked. A German shepherd of whom became a part of my family as my only son. He was healthy for a while until one day he started having seizures and was put on seizure meds. He ended up passing after turning 3years old on 1-25-25. I never lost and hurt so much but I will become much more cautious going forward.
