This place is a hidden gem! When you walk in, you’re greeted by “Louie,” the most beautiful parrot I have ever seen for sale in a pet store, and let me tell you, if you want it, this place has it, and if not, they can get it!! From axolotls to exotic birds, there’s quite the variety. From now on I will simply only buy my birds from Simon. He was the only one able to find me my beautiful albino parakeet! Very kind, welcoming, and knowledgeable. The bird I was given is very healthy and full of life. I would highly recommend it!

Big Fish Little Fish Pet Store Introduce
Welcome to Big Fish Little Fish Pet Store, a distinctive pet shop located at 55 Elm St, Somerville, MA 02144, USA. As a notable member of the "Pet Store Near Me" category, Big Fish Little Fish Pet Store offers a unique and varied selection of pets and supplies to the local community. Based on customer reviews, this store stands out for its availability of less common pets and the personalized service offered by its staff.
Upon entering Big Fish Little Fish Pet Store, customers are often greeted by "Louie," a striking parrot that serves as an in-store ambassador. This immediate encounter highlights one of the store's key features: its offering of a diverse range of animals, including exotic birds. One enthusiastic reviewer noted that the store boasts an impressive variety, from axolotls to exotic birds, and expresses confidence in the store's ability to source specific pets even if they are not currently in stock. This suggests a willingness to go the extra mile to fulfill customers' needs for unique animal companions.
The expertise of the staff, particularly an individual named Simon, is frequently praised, especially concerning birds. One customer recounts a positive experience where Simon was instrumental in finding a specific albino parakeet, emphasizing his kindness, welcoming demeanor, and extensive knowledge. The customer also notes the excellent health and vitality of the bird they purchased, further solidifying Simon's reputation as a reliable source for healthy avian pets. This personalized and knowledgeable service is a significant draw for customers seeking specific types of animals and expert advice.
In terms of its environment, one reviewer describes Big Fish Little Fish Pet Store as a "hidden gem." However, another review offers a more critical perspective, characterizing the overall vibe as "dingy, shabby, cluttered, cramped, and kind of depressing," using the term "hole-in-the-wall" in a negative context. This suggests that while the store may offer unique products and knowledgeable staff, its physical environment might not appeal to all customers. Potential visitors should be aware that the store's ambiance may be more functional than aesthetically polished.
Big Fish Little Fish Pet Store offers a range of services and products related to the animals they sell. While specific details about the full extent of their offerings are not exhaustively listed in the provided reviews, we can infer the following:
- Sale of Live Animals: The store sells a variety of small animals, birds (including exotic species and specific breeds like albino parakeets), and fish (including betta fish and more exotic options like axolotls).
- Pet Supplies: The store stocks pet supplies, as one reviewer mentions it being a convenient location for restocking familiar items. While the selection's breadth is not fully detailed, it is implied that they carry necessary provisions for the animals they sell.
- Special Orders: The store appears willing to source pets that are not currently in stock, indicating a potential for special orders to meet specific customer requests.
- Basic Advice: The owner, Armand, is described as friendly and available to offer basic advice, particularly for beginner fishkeepers.
A recurring point in one review concerns the store's approach to fishkeeping advice, specifically regarding betta fish. While the owner is acknowledged for not housing bettas in cups (a positive aspect), the reviewer expresses disagreement with some of the advice given, particularly the perpetuation of the "bettas live in puddles" myth and the suggestion that they do better in smaller tanks. The reviewer, identifying as an experienced fishkeeper, found some of the advice to be outdated or suspicious, suggesting that customers with intermediate to advanced aquarium knowledge might find differing opinions. Additionally, the reviewer noted that the display tanks were consistently "filthy" during their visits, raising concerns about the overall maintenance of the aquatic environment within the store.
One positive aspect mentioned is the store's convenient location near Porter Square and its slightly lower prices compared to regular chain pet stores, making it a potentially attractive option for budget-conscious shoppers who know exactly what they need.

In conclusion, Big Fish Little Fish Pet Store in Somerville, MA, offers a unique experience within the "Pet Store Near Me" category due to its availability of a diverse range of pets, including exotic birds and axolotls, and the knowledgeable service provided by staff members like Simon. While the store's physical environment may be perceived differently by customers, its convenient location, potentially lower prices, and willingness to source specific pets make it a noteworthy option for local pet enthusiasts, particularly those seeking less common animals. Mar 27, 2025 · A. CI’ve kept betta fish for eight years (important context for later — I’m no stranger to aquatics and consider myself competent when it comes to the hobby). I’ve been a repeat customer though I’m not always thrilled to do so. Let me start with the good: it’s a convenient location being right next to Porter Square and the prices are slightly cheaper than your regular chain pet stores. When I know exactly what supplies I need to restock, it’s great for a quick pickup. The betta selection is small but decent and the owner Armand doesn’t house them in cups which is what I like to see. I’ve bought two bettas from him before and health-wise they’re about the same as ones I’ve gotten from other pet chains. That’s not a knock against BFLF though, that’s just how bettas are as a breed. To speak to the not-so-good: as a local resource for gaining knowledge or troubleshooting tank problems, I’m conflicted. Armand is friendly, makes himself available, and gives credible basic advice if you are an absolute beginner and wouldn’t know where to start. But if you have intermediate-to-advanced experience with fish be warned you may come into disagreement with him. His attitude can come across as dismissive and some of the advice he’s given me before ranges from either things I already know to seemingly off and suspicious. He insists on the “bettas live in puddles and do better in smaller tanks” myth. I get the impression that he’s very set in his ways about how aquariums should be kept and hasn’t evolved his views. All the tanks on display have also been filthy every time I visit. The vibe of the store overall is dingy, shabby, cluttered, cramped, and kind of depressing. Real hole-in-the-wall kind of place and not in a charming way.
Feb 21, 2025 · Kitt KogutPurchased a chinchilla and all the extra $600 later the chinchilla passed away within 14 days. The owner tells me too bad no return on anything. Let me help please go see this pet shop All Things Aquatic LLC I have purchased thousands of dollars with them, look me up Axolotl_breeding on instagram. Everything you see there came from them. I lost a couple of pets and they would be empathetic and gift my family a credit. Big fish won’t he’s great at apologizing one of the best. But when I asked him to tell me that in the hole for $600. Your time and your money will go much further than Big Fish little Fish. He definitely lost my support and I have purchased many fish from big fish little fish. About $1,200 so far. Don’t make the mistake I made. I’m call the better business bureau next. I don’t want him upsetting another child. I didn’t need the money but talk to me about a credit or something. WARNING do not give him any of your money. He needs to retire. All Things Aquatic LLC Is #1 with a 4.7 in reviews just saying…customers speak louder than $$$…
Jun 06, 2023 · Ricky LaRocaThe owner of this shop is great. He makes himself available over the phone and in person and has such a clear and evident passion for animals. This is a somerville/Cambridge gem. Today I bought some decorations and plants for my new nano shrimp tank and he was SO helpful and nice about it. I’m excited to know I have a local spot that I can rely on for great advice and great, caring pet supplies. Thank you boss!
Nov 11, 2023 · X RPeople understandably have polarizing opinions on animal care. But I can't fathom trusting the internet over the staff here, that obviously care about each and every animal (while I was in the store he refused a sale to another customer because the animal was too young and he needed it to grow first). He's been right every time when it comes to my beta fish and the fish I bought were very healthy and are now very happy thanks to the advice I got here.
