On March 21st, my wife and I brought home a beautiful puppy named Teddy from Alley Cat Pet Center. He was a sweet, gentle dog, and immediately got along with our other puppy. But from day one, I noticed he was very traumatized by being put in a cage. I brushed it off at first, thinking he just needed time. but seeing how they treated them I realize why he was so traumatized. Unfortunately, on March 30th—just 9 days later—Teddy started vomiting severely. We rushed him to the vet hospital, stayed with him through it all, but the vet said he was extremely sick. We were told the treatment to save him could cost anywhere from $8,000 to $20,000. We called Alley Cat Pet Center, and all they offered was a refund. No help, no compassion, no effort to get him treated—despite it being well within the 10-day health warranty they offer. We lost Teddy that day. We were devastated. And it got worse. The vets told us he had a contagious virus that now lives in our home and could infect our other puppy too. We had to throw away everything—beds, toys, food bowls—over $300 worth of items, plus a custom-built dog house we had made for both dogs. The virus can live in our home’s environment for a year. And now we live with the fear that our other dog could get sick too. We told Alley Cat Pet Center everything. We begged them to at least notify the other pet owners who may have adopted dogs from the same area or litter—so maybe they could catch the virus early and save their pets. But they didn’t care. No follow-up. No apology. No responsibility. Just cold indifference. To make matters worse, we saw the conditions these animals are kept in. Filthy cages, no proper cleaning, no care for these innocent lives. What they are doing is not just wrong—it feels criminal. So here I am, writing this review with one hope: that if you are thinking about getting a pet from Alley Cat Pet Center, please, please reconsider. Ask me any questions—I’m open to share more details if it helps someone avoid this pain. You will fall in love with a pet, and then be left alone in your grief when they get sick. They will not help you. They will not care. I will not stop speaking out until this place is held accountable. Please don’t make the same mistake we did.

Lots of puppies looking so scared and sad whenever we walk by . This place does not take very good care of their puppies . I came into the mall today and took videos of a puppy consuming large chunks of plastic from the dollar store chew toys they put inside . They have no website or email address to send the videos to. Unfortunately I am not able to upload them on here (only photos ) Someone should investigate this store.

Don’t buy a dog here unless you enjoy spending hundreds of dollars at a vet less than 24 hours later. Took him to the vet the next day after we got him because he had frequent bloody diarrhea from the second we brought him home. Turns out he has severe giaria.

Cool place. Haven’t seen pet shops like this since the 90s and early 2000s due to all the animal activism. I think it’s important to have pet shops like this around otherwise kids will never have the desire to share their life with animals. All of my nephews and nieces have no desire to own any type of pets - they see it as a burden. But as a young kid I remember walking through the mall and seeing puppies; falling in love with them - which in turn opened up my interest in animals, leading to my career towards vet school. Just saying, it’s not all bad. A lot of these 1 star reviews are not valid.

Obviously the abuse to dogs is not okay. For once and for all people really need to not buy puppies from here. Even if they ARE sourced from breeders, which I highly doubt because any reputable breeder would not lock their pups in a 3 x 3 glass box, it doesn't matter. Puppies all look very stressed and are not being treated well. Rats and mice are crammed into 10 gallon tanks. Bird cages are filthy and probably a breeding ground for disease. My issue came with the fish section. As I am a very active fishkeeper, I was happy to have something other than petco nearby for fish. Absolutely NOT. Petco is a hundred times better. The workers give bad advice, saying that schooling fish like corydoras can be kept solitary or in pairs. They advocate for bettas to be kept in 1.5 gallon tanks and say it's a great "starter pet." I have bought fish from here. I purchased two otocinclus catfish. One is still very healthy, the other passed a month or so after purchase and likely wasn't alleycat's fault. I will admit that. However when going in to look and see if they had pygmy corydoras, I noticed a fancy veilteil goldfish gasping for air, as well as another fish dead on the bottom, and informed one of the workers that one of the fish was dead and his response was simply "yeah, they do that." Clear disregard for animal care. Axolotls are kept in filterless plastic tubs with very little decor. Don't buy fish here. Don't buy anything here. They mistreat animals all around the board. For the same price or cheaper, go to the Wet Spot Tropical in Portland. It is worth the drive. Much better service, prices, selection, and I guarantee you won't see a dead fish whatsoever.
