The most caring, compassionate animal hospitals I've used. They have been great with my families dogs, cats, and goats. Their prices are very reasonable. As long as I'm in New York State, this is the only place I will bring my fury or feathery family to. They even come out to my barn to examine and treat our goats. I'm so grateful to all of the staff here. And I'm so happy I found GCAH. GCAH is the best in the area!

Welcome to Groton City Animal Hospital
Groton City Animal Hospital (GCAH), located at 794 Cortland Rd, Groton, NY 13073, USA, stands out as a highly acclaimed establishment within the "Pet Hospital" category. This veterinary care provider is consistently praised by its clientele for its deeply caring and compassionate approach, coupled with a wide range of services for an impressive variety of animals. GCAH's commitment to both modern veterinary medicine and a client-focused experience makes it a leading choice for pet owners in Groton and the surrounding New York State region.
The environment at Groton City Animal Hospital is characterized by an atmosphere of profound care and kindness, as frequently highlighted in client testimonials. Patients and their owners consistently report feeling comfortable and supported, even during potentially stressful situations. For instance, one client shared their experience with an anxious adopted dog, stating, "The patience and care he received made me more comfortable for the future. He now has meds to reduce his anxiety so he can still get the care he needs. Everyone was patient and kind even when he would crocodile roll to get away." This illustrates the staff's dedication to creating a low-stress environment and their ability to handle challenging animal behaviors with empathy and professionalism.
Beyond the clinical setting, GCAH extends its compassionate care through its "well-run office" and responsive staff. The computerized appointment system allows for efficient scheduling, and the team strives to accommodate all requests, including emergencies. This dedication to operational excellence ensures that pet owners receive timely and effective care, minimizing wait times and administrative hurdles. The overall impression is one of a friendly, knowledgeable, and genuinely helpful team that prioritizes the well-being of both the animals and their human companions.
Groton City Animal Hospital distinguishes itself by offering an extensive array of veterinary services, catering to a remarkably diverse patient base. Their services are designed to provide comprehensive care from routine wellness to complex medical and surgical interventions. Key service areas include:
-
Multi-Species Care: Unlike many clinics that focus solely on dogs and cats, GCAH proudly serves a wide range of animals, including "dogs, cats, and goats." Further information indicates their expertise extends to pocket pets, small farm animals, horses, sheep, and alpacas & llamas. This makes GCAH a unique and invaluable resource for families with various types of animal companions.
-
General Wellness and Preventative Care: This forms the foundation of their practice, encompassing routine check-ups, vaccinations, parasite control, and nutritional counseling to maintain optimal health and prevent disease. They emphasize ongoing nutrition and problem prevention, providing valuable informational articles on their website to educate pet owners.
-
Medical and Diagnostic Services: GCAH is equipped to diagnose and treat a wide array of illnesses and conditions. Their comprehensive approach to patient care includes thorough physical exams, laboratory testing, and advanced diagnostic imaging (though specific imaging modalities like X-ray or ultrasound are not explicitly listed in the provided text, they are typically standard for a comprehensive hospital).
-
Surgical Services: The hospital performs various surgical procedures, including soft tissue surgeries and dental procedures. Dr. Kathy Baxendell, one of the veterinarians and owner, is noted for her role as one of the small animal soft tissue surgeons and principle small animal dentist for the practice.
-
Dental Care: Recognizing the importance of oral health, GCAH provides comprehensive dental services, including cleanings and other necessary interventions, as highlighted by Dr. Baxendell's specialization.
-
Emergency & Urgent Care: GCAH accepts emergencies anytime the clinic is open, with a veterinarian and trained personnel on duty six days a week. They are prepared to handle urgent care situations, including accidental poison ingestion or injuries, and can "squeeze" urgent cases between scheduled appointments.
-
Mobile Veterinary Services: A standout feature, as mentioned by a client, is their willingness to "even come out to my barn to examine and treat our goats." This mobile service for large animals is a significant convenience and benefit for farm owners.
Groton City Animal Hospital's unique selling points are strongly reflected in client experiences and the breadth of their service offerings:
-
Exceptional Compassion and Patient Care: Consistently described as "the most caring, compassionate animal hospital," GCAH excels in its empathetic approach to animal welfare. This is particularly evident in their handling of anxious pets, where staff demonstrate patience and utilize methods, including medication, to ensure the animal receives necessary care without undue stress.
-
Versatility Across Species: The ability to care for "dogs, cats, and goats," as well as horses, sheep, alpacas, llamas, and pocket pets, makes GCAH a rare and valuable asset to the community. This broad expertise saves owners from needing to visit multiple specialized clinics.
-
On-Site and Mobile Services: The combination of a well-equipped hospital facility and mobile veterinary services for large animals provides unparalleled convenience and accessibility for owners of farm animals.
-
Reasonable Pricing: Clients consistently praise the "very reasonable prices," making high-quality veterinary care accessible to a broader range of pet owners, which is a crucial factor for many families.
-
Experienced and Dedicated Team: The practice boasts a team of veterinarians, including Dr. Kathy Baxendell (owner and a 1991 Cornell graduate) and Dr. Katherine Dart (also a Cornell graduate), alongside experienced veterinary technicians and assistants. This depth of expertise and long-standing commitment to the practice contribute to the high standard of care.
-
Community Involvement: GCAH offers discounted services to senior citizens and local area rescue groups, demonstrating a commitment to supporting the community and animal welfare beyond their direct patient care.
-

She also is very detailed in explaining a diagnosis and her thoughts. She treats Primrose with respect and kindness. We always feel that Primrose is getting top notch care with Dr. Austin and her team.
