It was a pretty nice area. Gates work, no holes in fence. Plenty of grass but also quite a few places that were run down and either only had wood chips, dirt, or mud. Overall, it was pretty good and I will visit again. I was surprised that it was completely empty and I was the only person with my dog there on a Saturday afternoon. Only thing I had an issue with was there were so many cigarettes butts there. People should pick them up or throw them elsewhere so the dogs don't eat them and vomit or get sick. It would be nice if the area could be level (not heavily sloped like it currently is) because it is quite sloped and when it's muddy or snowy, it becomes a hassle walking or jogging down the field. Same experience spring or winter.

Welcome to West Hills Small Dog Run
For dog owners across Long Island, New York, finding a safe, dedicated, and well-maintained space for their smaller canine companions to run and play off-leash is a top priority. The West Hills Small Dog Run, nestled within the expansive West Hills County Park at Highhold Dr, Huntington, NY 11743, USA, offers just such a haven. This specific dog run is designed with the needs of smaller breeds in mind, providing an environment where little pups can socialize, exercise, and explore without being overwhelmed by larger, more boisterous dogs. It's a valuable community asset, fostering a sense of camaraderie among local dog owners and ensuring that even the smallest members of our furry families have a place to thrive.
The importance of a dedicated small dog run cannot be overstated. While general dog parks are fantastic, a separate area specifically for smaller dogs offers crucial safety and comfort, allowing them to engage in natural play behaviors without fear or intimidation. This focused environment contributes significantly to their physical well-being, helping them burn energy and maintain a healthy weight. Equally important is the mental and social stimulation they receive from interacting with other dogs their size, which helps build confidence and improve social skills. For New York residents on Long Island, West Hills Small Dog Run provides this essential resource, ensuring that every pup, no matter how small, has access to quality off-leash recreation in a secure and thoughtful setting.
West Hills Small Dog Run is located on Highhold Dr, Huntington, NY 11743, USA, as part of the larger West Hills County Park. This prime location in Huntington, Suffolk County, makes it easily accessible for residents across Long Island, including those in nearby towns such as Melville, Commack, Dix Hills, and Plainview. West Hills County Park itself is a well-known and expansive green space, offering a variety of outdoor activities and natural beauty.
Access to the dog run is generally straightforward, with parking available within West Hills County Park. While reviews don't specify the exact parking arrangements for the small dog run, county parks typically provide ample parking facilities. Visitors should note that while the park is open year-round, there might be fees for parking or entry during peak seasons or specific times (e.g., Memorial Day to Labor Day on weekends between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. for the general park). The dog run's integration into a county park means it benefits from broader park amenities and maintenance efforts, making it a convenient and established destination for local dog owners.
West Hills Small Dog Run provides several key services and amenities tailored to ensure a positive experience for smaller dogs and their owners:
- Dedicated Small Dog Area: The primary service is a securely fenced, off-leash area specifically designated for small dogs (typically under 25 lbs). This separation ensures that smaller, more vulnerable dogs can play safely without intimidation from larger breeds.
- Secure Fencing and Gates: Reviews confirm that the "Gates work, no holes in fence," indicating a well-maintained and secure perimeter crucial for keeping small dogs contained.
- Access to Fresh Water: Information available for West Hills Dog Parks (including the small dog run) indicates the presence of a "Water fountain available." This is a vital amenity for keeping dogs hydrated during playtime, especially on warmer days.
- Waste Management: The park is equipped with "Waste bag dispensers and garbage cans," promoting cleanliness and responsible pet ownership.
- Seating for Owners: "Benches for owners to relax" are provided, allowing companions to comfortably supervise their dogs.
- Natural Terrain and Green Space: The run offers "Plenty of grass" for play, along with a mix of "wood chips" and "dirt" surfaces, providing varied textures for exploration.
West Hills Small Dog Run stands out with several key features that contribute to its appeal for Long Island dog owners:
- Purpose-Built for Small Dogs: Its explicit designation as a "Small Dog Run" is its most significant highlight, providing a safe and appropriate environment where little pups can confidently interact and play.
- Well-Maintained Fencing: The assurance that "Gates work, no holes in fence" is crucial for peace of mind, preventing escapes and ensuring a secure play area.
- Good Overall Condition: Despite some uneven terrain, the park is described as "pretty good" and "not as beat up as the others I’ve used," indicating a generally well-kept facility compared to many dog runs.
- Community Approval: The positive comments, especially about the "good shape the run is in" from a Shiba Meetup group, highlight its quality and suitability for specific breed gatherings.
- Access to Water: The availability of a water fountain within the run is a significant convenience, ensuring dogs can stay hydrated during their exercise.
- Integration with West Hills County Park: Being part of a larger county park means access to additional amenities like dog-friendly trails (where dogs must be leashed), further enhancing the outdoor experience for owners and their pets.
As a public facility managed by Suffolk County Parks, West Hills Small Dog Run does not offer commercial promotions or special discounts. Its primary "offer" is the provision of a free and accessible off-leash area for small dogs within a beautiful county park.
However, it's worth noting that while the dog run itself is open year-round, the general West Hills County Park may have entrance fees during specific peak seasons (e.g., Memorial Day to Labor Day on weekends between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.). For the most up-to-date information on any potential fees for park entry or parking, it is always best to consult the official Suffolk County Parks website.
Local dog groups or the Suffolk County Parks Department might occasionally organize events at West Hills County Park that could be of interest to dog owners, such as community clean-up days or dog-friendly walks on the leashed trails. These opportunities, while not "promotions," contribute to the community aspect and enjoyment of the park.

For New York locals, particularly those in Huntington and across Long Island who own small dogs, West Hills Small Dog Run offers a highly valuable and suitable recreational space. Its primary advantage lies in its specific dedication to smaller breeds, providing a secure and comfortable environment where little pups can engage in off-leash play without the concerns often associated with mixed-size dog parks. The confirmed integrity of the fencing and gates ensures peace of mind for owners, while the availability of fresh water and waste disposal stations underscores a commitment to convenience and cleanliness.
While some reviews mention uneven terrain and occasional muddy spots, these are common challenges in natural park settings, and the overall positive feedback on the park's condition suggests it's a well-managed facility. The observation of it being "completely empty" on a Saturday afternoon, though surprising to one reviewer, could be a benefit for those seeking a quieter playtime or for more nervous pups. The strong community endorsement from specific breed meetups highlights its suitability for focused gatherings. Despite the need for vigilance regarding cigarette butts (a general public park issue), West Hills Small Dog Run stands as an essential resource, providing a safe, clean, and dedicated space where Long Island's smaller dogs can truly thrive, exercise, and socialize, making it a cherished local amenity for their devoted owners.

May 26, 2025 · Matthew RossReally nice dog run and not as beat up as the others I’ve used. Scheduled a Shiba Meetup recently and everyone commented on the good shape the run is in.
Apr 09, 2024 · Lily CardlinWest Hills Small Dog Park is a decent spot with a good amount of space for dogs to run around freely. The park provides some conveniences like dog bowls and poop bags, which is helpful. There are about four benches for pet parents to relax, though a few more wouldn’t hurt. It can get quite muddy after it rains, so keep that in mind if you’re visiting in wet weather. One downside is that it's been pretty quiet (empty) every time we’ve visited on weekdays, so it might be ideal for those looking for a less crowded park.
Oct 30, 2024 · Ani ArjuneThe West Hills small dog run is normally a great place to let my Havanese puppy run without fear of being trampled by larger dogs. Some time in the past week mulch has been spread. Large and small chunks of wood (poorly mulched) which can splinter in my dogs mouth and paws. Had a dog once that suffered internal bleeding, not fatal but could have been. Why would any one spread this stuff in a dog park. Shame on them
