This has become one of my favorite dog parks. It's all off leash and there are 2 big connected fenced in areas. A downside at times is its right next to the train tracks so sometimes the air is a bit rough. Lots of friendly dogs and people, no specific small dog areas but I've never had problems with my 2 15lb pups. A hill spits the whole thing so there is kinda a private trail... A lil woods patch in the back corner for the dogs to explore. It's a good park.

Welcome to Victory Prairie Off-Leash Recreation Area
For dog owners in Minneapolis, providing ample opportunities for our furry companions to run, play, and socialize off-leash is a cornerstone of responsible pet ownership. While our city boasts a variety of green spaces, dedicated off-leash dog parks are invaluable resources. In North Minneapolis, the Victory Prairie Off-Leash Recreation Area stands out as a highly favored destination, cherished by locals for its expansive layout and diverse features that cater to energetic pups and their human companions alike.
This isn't just a simple patch of grass; it’s a thoughtfully designed space that allows dogs to truly be dogs, offering varied terrain for exploration and plenty of room to stretch their legs. From open fields perfect for a game of fetch to shaded "woods patches" for sniffing adventures, Victory Prairie has cultivated a loyal following. This article will provide a comprehensive guide to Victory Prairie Off-Leash Recreation Area, highlighting its location, amenities, unique features, and why it has become a cherished staple for dog owners in the Minneapolis community.
Victory Prairie Off-Leash Recreation Area is conveniently located in North Minneapolis, within the welcoming Victory neighborhood. You'll find this popular dog park at 4701 Russell Ave N, Minneapolis, MN 55412, USA. Its address places it squarely within a well-established residential area, making it easily accessible for a significant number of Minneapolis residents, particularly those in the northern and western parts of the city.
The park benefits from good accessibility, with entrances on Russell Avenue North and through Victory Prairie via Osseo Road. This dual entry system helps with the flow of traffic, especially during peak hours. When it comes to parking, visitors generally find ample street parking available on Russell Avenue N and surrounding residential streets, which is a significant advantage compared to some other urban dog parks where parking can be a challenge. The fact that the entrance to this park is ADA-compliant also highlights its commitment to accessibility for all visitors. While the park is situated near train tracks, which can sometimes result in "rougher air" as noted by a reviewer, its overall accessibility and the available parking make it a convenient choice for regular visits. The park is open from 6 a.m. to midnight daily, offering extensive hours for enjoyment throughout the day and into the evening.
Victory Prairie Off-Leash Recreation Area provides a robust set of services and amenities designed to ensure a safe, clean, and enjoyable experience for both dogs and their owners. These offerings are standard for well-managed public off-leash areas in Minneapolis.
-
Two Large, Connected Fenced Areas: The park features two extensive, securely fenced-in areas that are connected, providing ample space for dogs to run freely and interact. This expansive layout, encompassing approximately 2.5 to 2.62 acres, allows for different play styles and helps prevent overcrowding, even when the park is busy.
-
Fully Off-Leash Permitted Zone: The entire designated area is off-leash, allowing dogs to fully express their natural behaviors and get vigorous exercise in a controlled environment.
-
Dog Waste Bag Dispensers: To promote cleanliness and responsible pet ownership, the park is typically well-stocked with dog waste bags, readily available at various points within the park. This makes it easy for owners to clean up after their pets.
-
Garbage Cans: Ample garbage receptacles are provided throughout the park for convenient disposal of dog waste bags and other litter, contributing to the overall hygiene and pleasantness of the space.
-
Community Water Bowls (Bring Your Own Water): While the park often provides bowls for community use, it's important to note that direct potable water sources are generally not available. This means owners are responsible for bringing their own water to keep their dogs hydrated, especially during warmer weather or after strenuous play.
-
Seating for Owners: The park includes benches and often "kind souls have left chairs for patrons to use," providing comfortable spots for owners to relax and supervise their dogs' playtime.
It is crucial for all users to remember that a valid Minneapolis Off-Leash Dog Park permit (annual or daily) is required to use Victory Prairie Off-Leash Recreation Area, as is the case with all Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) off-leash facilities. This permit system helps fund the ongoing maintenance and amenities of the parks. Additionally, dogs must be licensed in Minneapolis to obtain an off-leash permit.
Victory Prairie Off-Leash Recreation Area stands out among Minneapolis dog parks due to several distinctive features and highlights that enhance the user experience for both dogs and their human companions.
-
Diverse Terrain for Exploration: Unlike some flat, open dog parks, Victory Prairie offers varied topography. It includes "open fields" for running, a "hill" that splits the whole area, creating what one reviewer described as a "private trail," and even a "lil woods patch in the back corner for the dogs to explore." This diverse landscape provides rich sensory stimulation and different opportunities for play and sniffing adventures, keeping dogs engaged and preventing boredom. The terrain is largely grass, with some gravel paths and wood chips near seating areas.
-
Spacious 2.5 to 2.62-Acre Layout: With approximately 2.5 to 2.62 acres of fully fenced space, the park is large enough to allow for long runs and robust play, accommodating multiple dogs without feeling overly crowded. The connected nature of its two large fenced areas maximizes this sense of space and provides distinct zones for different types of play.
-
Friendly Community Atmosphere: Reviewers consistently praise the "lots of friendly dogs and people" at Victory Prairie. This indicates a positive and welcoming atmosphere, fostering a good social environment for both canine and human visitors. Many dogs are "incredibly excited to engage with other dogs," suggesting a generally well-socialized canine crowd that frequent the park.
-
Well-Maintained and Aesthetically Pleasing: The park's "pretty well scaped" land and the presence of "cool decorations in the trees" suggest an attention to aesthetic detail and ongoing care that enhances the overall pleasantness of the environment.
-
ADA-Compliant Entrance: The park's ADA-compliant entrance on the east side ensures accessibility for individuals with disabilities, making it an inclusive space for all community members.
While there isn't a specific small dog area, reviews suggest that smaller pups generally integrate well, thanks to the ample space and the overall friendly demeanor of the park's regular visitors. However, as with any multi-dog environment, owners should always supervise their pets closely.
As a public off-leash recreation area managed by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB), Victory Prairie Off-Leash Recreation Area does not offer traditional commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the retail sense. Its value proposition for locals comes from its accessible permit system and consistent, high-quality public amenity.
-
Affordable Annual and Daily Permits: Access to Victory Prairie, like all MPRB off-leash dog parks, requires the purchase of a valid permit. The MPRB offers both annual and daily permit options, providing flexibility for different usage patterns. For Minneapolis residents, an annual permit for one dog for the 2025-26 period is approximately $38.00. For two dogs, it's approximately $65.00, and for three dogs, about $92.00. Non-residents also have options, with a single dog permit costing around $66.00 and $33.00 for each additional dog. Daily permits are available for $5.00 per dog for both residents and non-residents. These permits provide unlimited use of all Minneapolis off-leash dog parks for the permit period, offering excellent value for regular users.
-
Extensive Year-Round Access: The park is open from 6 a.m. to midnight daily, year-round. This consistent, extensive availability is a major "offer" for locals, ensuring that dogs have a safe place to play regardless of the season or time of day (within operating hours). This is especially valuable given Minnesota's varied climate.
-
Community Hub: While not a direct promotion, the park's consistent ability to attract "lots of friendly dogs and people" creates a de facto "special offer" of community and socialization for both pets and their owners. It's a place where locals can easily connect and share their passion for dogs, fostering a sense of belonging among regular visitors.

Apr 14, 2025 · C JI take my son and his dog here. It is pretty obvious I have a pitbull. He's very welcome here. I have never had any problems, people and dogs are very friendly. This is probably one of my favorite dog parks in Minneapolis. There is an off-leash dog park and a leash dog park. There is ample space for your dog to run and socialize with other dogs. Again most people here I have met are extremely friendly regardless of breed. There is water available most of the time and the place is pretty darn clean. Highly recommend this place.
Aug 23, 2022 · Leika SchmidtThis park has a big space and a few trees. I don't like coming here at "popular times" because there are many inattentive owners on their cell phones and random dog fights that no one tries to break up. I come here at random times so my pups can run, but I go elsewhere for socialization.
Mar 21, 2025 · Daniel SNice park. Generally very well-kept. I have had minimal issues with other dogs here, as the owners are usually attentive and use common sense. I go at all times of the day and sometimes run into another regular visitor. This park is beautiful, especially in the warmer months and makes for lovely photos of the dogs playing. Usually very quiet aside from about 3-6pm, sometimes I am the only one there otherwise. I like that it is tucked away and isn't a "destination" park like some of the larger ones, so is mostly used by others in the neighborhood who collectively take care of it. Can be muddy in spots, especially on the Prairie side after wet weather, but that's half the fun!
