Welcome to Sellwood Off-Leash Dog Park
For dog owners in Portland, Oregon, finding a fantastic spot where their four-legged family members can truly stretch their legs and socialize is a top priority. Among the many excellent options in our city, Sellwood Off-Leash Dog Park stands out as a beloved destination. This isn't just any patch of grass; it’s a vibrant, spacious area where canine joy is palpable, set against the scenic backdrop of the Willamette River. Locals consistently flock here, drawn by the expansive off-leash opportunities and the natural beauty that makes every visit a mini-adventure for both pets and their people.
Sellwood Off-Leash Dog Park offers a quintessential Portland experience for dogs. It provides ample space for energetic pups to run, play fetch, and interact with other dogs in a designated off-leash environment. What truly sets it apart, however, is its unique riverfront location. Dogs that love to swim can safely splash and cool off in the Willamette, making it an ideal spot during warmer months. Beyond the open play areas, there are also opportunities for strolls along the river, where leashed dogs and their owners can enjoy the tranquil surroundings.
This park serves as a vital community hub, fostering connections among local dog enthusiasts. It's a place where you can regularly see familiar faces, share tips with fellow pet parents, and truly feel like part of a collective that prioritizes the well-being and happiness of our canine companions. Its popularity speaks volumes about its role in the Portland dog community, offering a reliable and enjoyable outdoor space for daily exercise and socialization.
Sellwood Off-Leash Dog Park is conveniently located at 7987 Southeast Grand Avenue, Portland, OR 97202, USA. This prime location places it within the vibrant Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood, known for its charming shops, eateries, and strong community feel. The park's address is often associated with Sellwood Riverfront Park, as the off-leash area is a significant part of this larger recreational space.
Its position along the Willamette River makes it particularly accessible for those living in Southeast Portland and nearby areas. Reaching the park is generally straightforward, whether you're coming by car, bike, or even public transportation. For drivers, street parking is typically available in the vicinity, though it can become busy during peak hours, especially on sunny weekends. The park's pathways are often described as accessible, making it easier for individuals with strollers or wheelchairs to navigate portions of the area.
The beauty of its location also lies in its integration with the natural landscape. Nestled below the Sellwood Bridge, the park offers picturesque views of the river and surrounding greenery. This setting provides a refreshing escape from the urban hustle, while still being easily reachable from various parts of the city. For Portland locals, its proximity means that a quick trip for some off-leash fun is always a feasible option, adding to the daily enjoyment of pet ownership in our city.
While Sellwood Off-Leash Dog Park doesn't offer "services" in the commercial sense (like grooming or boarding), it provides a wealth of natural amenities and designated spaces that cater directly to the needs of dogs and their owners. Think of these as the fundamental offerings that make it such a valuable community asset:
Designated Off-Leash Area: The primary "service" is the officially designated space where dogs are permitted to run and play freely without a leash. This allows for essential exercise and social interaction crucial for a dog's well-being.
River Access for Dogs: A major draw for water-loving pups, the park offers direct access to the Willamette River. This allows dogs to swim, cool off, and play in the water, a rare and highly valued feature in an urban dog park.
Open Grassy Fields: The park features expansive open fields of turf grass, providing plenty of room for dogs to chase balls, engage in group play, and simply burn off energy in a safe environment.
Walking Paths: While the primary off-leash area is for free play, the larger Sellwood Riverfront Park of which it is a part offers paved and unpaved walking paths where leashed dogs can enjoy a stroll with their owners.
Natural Surroundings: The park's setting amidst trees (like oak and pine) and along the river offers a naturally stimulating environment, providing varied scents and sights for dogs to explore.
Picnic Tables and Seating: For the human companions, there are often picnic tables and other seating options available, allowing owners to relax and observe their dogs while enjoying the park's atmosphere.
Restroom Facilities (at adjacent park area): While perhaps not directly within the immediate off-leash area, amenities like accessible restrooms are typically available within the broader Sellwood Riverfront Park, which is beneficial for longer visits.
It's important for visitors to remember that these are public park amenities. Therefore, pet owners are responsible for bringing their own waste bags and water for their dogs, as these are not consistently provided on-site. The focus here is on providing the natural space and freedom that dogs crave.
Sellwood Off-Leash Dog Park boasts several key features and highlights that make it a cherished spot for Portland's dog community:
Riverside Location and Water Access: This is arguably the biggest highlight. The park's position directly on the Willamette River means dogs can enjoy swimming and splashing, which is a fantastic way for them to cool down and get exercise, especially during warm weather. This natural water feature sets it apart from many other city dog parks.
Expansive Off-Leash Area: The park offers a generous 1.5-acre off-leash area, providing ample space for dogs of all sizes to run, play, and socialize freely. This large area prevents overcrowding and allows for diverse play dynamics.
Scenic Views: Pet owners can enjoy picturesque views of the Willamette River and the surrounding natural landscape while their dogs play. It's a beautiful environment that enhances the overall experience for humans too.
Kayaking and RC Boat Launch Access: Beyond just the dog park, the larger Sellwood Riverfront Park includes a kayak launch, which adds to the recreational opportunities available. This multi-use aspect means different community members can enjoy the space simultaneously.
Open Fields for Active Play: The large, open grassy fields are perfect for high-energy dogs to play fetch or simply run at top speed, ensuring they get the physical activity they need.
Community Atmosphere: While not a physical feature, the park is known for fostering a friendly and active community of dog owners. It's a place where regulars connect and dogs make lasting friendships, contributing to Portland's vibrant pet culture.
However, it is important for potential visitors to note a few recent changes mentioned in customer reviews:
Removal of Lighting: The park's lights have reportedly been removed due to age and safety concerns, with no immediate plans for replacement. This means the park may feel unsafe or be less suitable for use during darker hours, particularly in the evening or early morning.
Reduced and Relocated Garbage Cans: There has been a reduction in the number of garbage cans, and their placement has been altered to only be around the grassy off-leash area, rather than throughout the entire park. This has led to an observed increase in litter, including dangerous items like glass bottles, on the shoreline and in other areas, posing a potential hazard to dogs and people.
Despite these recent challenges, the inherent beauty and recreational value of Sellwood Off-Leash Dog Park remain significant highlights for the Portland community.
As a public park operated by Portland Parks & Recreation, Sellwood Off-Leash Dog Park does not offer commercial promotions or special offers in the traditional sense, such as discounts or loyalty programs. Its "offer" is its very existence as a free, publicly accessible space for dog owners.
However, the value it provides can be considered a constant "special offer" to local residents:
Free Access: The most significant "promotion" is that there is no fee for entry or use of the off-leash area. This makes it an accessible recreational option for all dog owners in Portland, regardless of income.
Community Events: While not official "promotions," public parks often host or facilitate community events, clean-up days, or dog-related gatherings. Keep an eye on local community boards or Portland Parks & Recreation announcements for such opportunities that might enhance your park experience.
Health and Wellness Benefits: The park offers invaluable benefits for both dogs and their owners in terms of physical exercise, mental stimulation, and social interaction, all freely available.
For information on broader Portland Parks & Recreation initiatives, dog-related events, or any temporary closures for maintenance, it's always best to check the official Portland Parks & Recreation website or local community calendars. These sources will provide the most accurate and up-to-date information relevant to the park's usage.
As Sellwood Off-Leash Dog Park is a public park maintained by Portland Parks & Recreation, there isn't a direct phone number specifically for the dog park itself. For general inquiries about park rules, maintenance, or facilities, you would typically contact Portland Parks & Recreation. However, for locating the park, the essential information is:
Address: 7987 Southeast Grand Avenue, Portland, OR 97202, USA
It's important to note that the provided customer reviews did not include a specific phone number for the dog park. If you need to report an issue, inquire about specific park policies, or find out about current conditions (e.g., muddy areas, temporary closures), it's best to refer to the official Portland Parks & Recreation website or their general contact information, which can be found through a quick online search for "Portland Parks & Recreation contact."
Sellwood Off-Leash Dog Park remains an invaluable resource and a highly suitable destination for dog owners throughout Portland, Oregon. Despite recent adjustments to lighting and waste management, its core offerings align perfectly with the needs and desires of our local canine community and their human companions.
Firstly, the sheer amount of dedicated off-leash space is a major draw. In a bustling city like Portland, having a large area where dogs can truly run free, play, and socialize without the constraints of a leash is essential for their physical and mental well-being. This park provides that vital outlet, allowing high-energy breeds to burn off steam and shyer dogs to build confidence in a natural, open setting.
Secondly, the unique access to the Willamette River sets Sellwood apart. For many Portland dogs, swimming is a favorite pastime, and this park offers a rare opportunity for them to safely enjoy the water. This feature alone makes it a prime spot for cooling off during warmer months and adds an exciting dimension to regular park visits.
While the recent changes regarding lighting and garbage cans are noted by visitors, the fundamental benefits of this park—its size, river access, and natural beauty—continue to outweigh these concerns for many. The onus is placed on responsible pet ownership, encouraging locals to bring their own waste bags and be mindful of litter, fostering a shared responsibility for maintaining this cherished public space.
Ultimately, Sellwood Off-Leash Dog Park embodies Portland's love for pets and outdoor recreation. It offers a free, accessible, and stimulating environment for dogs, while also providing a scenic and social space for their owners. For any local seeking a reliable and enriching outdoor experience for their beloved canine, Sellwood Off-Leash Dog Park continues to be a top recommendation, a place where tails wag, friendships are forged, and the simple joy of a dog's life unfolds.

Jun 13, 2025 · Tim WirickAs always, my dogs loved playing at the river tonight. Unfortunately, I dropped my rating from 5 stars to 4 because of some recent changes made at the park. The lights were removed for safety reasons due to safety reasons because of their age. Sadly, there is no plan to replace them leaving this popular park unsafe in the dark. They have also reduced the garbage cans and changed the placement of them. Instead of spacing them throughout the park, they are now only located around the grassy off leash area. As a result, I have noticed more litter in the park. On Monday, I pulled 4 glass bottles and multiple cans from the shoreline. Not only is it ugly... it's dangerous for dogs, children, and anyone recreating in the river.
Jun 16, 2023 · PJ WallaceThis was a really cool dog park with lots of river access for the dogs. There's no fence, so you may want to make sure you have good recall with your dog before visiting. There were lots of happy dogs swimming and hanging out on the beach. There is a restroom nearby, but it was not very nice. I didn't get a chance to do the trails, but it looked like there were a few trails that would be nice for a walk.
