Welcome to McNary Dog Park

For many dog owners in Lake Oswego, finding a safe, dedicated space for their furry friends to run, play, and socialize off-leash is a top priority. While the larger Portland metropolitan area offers various options, having a convenient local spot truly enhances the daily lives of both pets and their human companions. McNary Dog Park stands out as a beloved local gem, offering a much-appreciated fenced environment for canines to enjoy. This comprehensive guide will delve into what makes McNary Dog Park a valuable resource for Lake Oswego residents, covering everything from its layout to seasonal considerations.

Introduction / Overview

McNary Dog Park is a well-regarded community asset nestled within Lake Oswego, Oregon, specifically designed to provide a secure and enjoyable off-leash experience for dogs. This park, while smaller in size compared to some larger regional facilities, is highly valued for its key features, particularly its fully fenced perimeter. This fencing provides peace of mind for owners, knowing their dogs can play freely within a contained area, reducing concerns about wandering or unexpected encounters. It’s an ideal spot for dogs of all sizes to burn off energy, practice their social skills, and engage in playful interactions with other dogs. The park fosters a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, reflecting Lake Oswego's commitment to supporting its pet-owning community. While it is primarily a grassy area, discussions among local users often highlight the desire for more all-weather surfacing to combat mud during the wet Oregon winters, a common challenge for many natural-surface dog parks in the region. Despite this, its convenience and security make it a go-to for many in the immediate area.

Location and Accessibility

McNary Dog Park is conveniently located at 31 Juarez, Lake Oswego, OR 97035, USA. This address places it within a residential area of Lake Oswego, making it highly accessible for those living nearby. For residents who prefer to walk, the park is often within a comfortable walking distance, allowing for easy, daily visits. For those driving, the park features limited parking availability. It is important for visitors to be mindful of local parking regulations and residential considerations when seeking a spot.

Regarding public transportation, Lake Oswego is served by TriMet bus lines. While specific bus stops directly adjacent to the park might require a short walk, various routes connect to areas within Lake Oswego, making it possible to reach the park via public transit for those without personal vehicles. Checking the latest TriMet schedules and route maps for lines serving the Lake Oswego area, particularly those near McNary Parkway or Jefferson Parkway, would be beneficial for planning your trip. The park’s integration into a neighborhood setting means it benefits from existing infrastructure, enhancing its overall accessibility for the local community. Its localized position makes it a natural gathering point for dog owners from the surrounding Lake Oswego neighborhoods.

Services Offered

As a public dog park managed by the City of Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation, McNary Dog Park offers essential amenities geared towards providing a functional and safe off-leash environment. While it doesn't offer commercial services like grooming or training, its core provisions are highly valued by local dog owners:

  • Fully Fenced Off-Leash Area: The most significant service is the provision of a secure, fully enclosed space where dogs can run and play without a leash. This feature, confirmed by recent updates in 2023, provides crucial peace of mind for owners regarding their dog's safety and containment.
  • Open Grassy Play Area: The park primarily consists of a grassy expanse, offering ample room for dogs to exercise, chase balls, and engage in spirited play. This natural surface is generally comfortable for dogs' paws.
  • Doggie Bag Stations: The park typically provides dog waste bag dispensers and waste receptacles, encouraging responsible pet ownership and helping to maintain the cleanliness of the park. Visitors are always encouraged to bring their own bags as well.
  • Community Gathering Space: Although not a formal "service," the park naturally serves as a hub for local dog owners to connect, share experiences, and foster a sense of community among pet lovers in Lake Oswego.
  • Seasonal Operation: It is important to note that Lake Oswego dog parks, including McNary, are often open seasonally, typically between March 15th and September 15th. This seasonal closure during wetter months is due to the park's all-grass surface, which can become very muddy and prone to damage with heavy use in the winter.
Features / Highlights

McNary Dog Park boasts several features that make it a favored spot for dog owners in Lake Oswego:

  • Complete Fencing: A paramount highlight is that the park is fully fenced. This crucial feature, updated in 2023, provides an essential layer of security, allowing dogs to play freely and safely without the constant worry of them straying. This is particularly beneficial for owners of dogs with high prey drives or those still working on their recall.
  • Compact and Manageable Size: Described by users as "nice small," the park's size is often seen as a benefit. It's large enough for dogs to get a good run, but small enough that owners can keep a close eye on their pets and easily monitor interactions, fostering a more intimate and less overwhelming environment.
  • Easy Accessibility: Its location in a residential area makes it highly convenient for local residents, often within walking distance. This ease of access encourages frequent visits and integration into daily routines.
  • Grass Surface: The natural grass provides a comfortable and natural play surface for dogs. However, as noted by reviews, this can lead to muddy conditions during the wet season, prompting the seasonal closure.
  • Neighborhood Integration: Being part of a neighborhood park, it blends seamlessly into the local community, contributing to the overall dog-friendly atmosphere of Lake Oswego.
Promotions or Special Offers

As a public park operated by the City of Lake Oswego Parks & Recreation, McNary Dog Park does not offer commercial promotions, discounts, or special offers. Access to the park is free for all members of the public, aligning with the city's mission to provide accessible recreational spaces for its residents and their pets. There are no membership fees, entry charges, or paid services within the park itself.

Any "special offers" would typically arise from community-organized events, such as informal dog meetups, park clean-up days, or breed-specific playdates, which are coordinated by local dog owner groups rather than the City of Lake Oswego. For information on such informal gatherings or community initiatives, local Lake Oswego dog owner social media groups or community forums would be the best resources. The park's value lies in its consistent availability as a free, safe, and welcoming space for dogs to play.

Nice small fully fenced dog park that is easy to get to. Parking is limited

If you live in the area there's not a lot of choice for dog parks in walking distance, so it really hurts when this place closes in the winter. Covering at least a portion of it with barkchips or gravel would solve the mud issues in the wet seasons, but unfortunately it's currently all grass and mud. The reviews saying that it's not completely fenced are out of date, it was fully fenced in 2023.

Small grassy space big enough for easy throws. No water, bring your own. The space is fenced and about 180x72 feet in size. There is also a children's play area outside the dog park.

Well maintained and frequented park with a play structure and pretty good sized fenced dog park.

It’s pretty small and haven’t found many dogs there for socializing.
