Welcome to North Star Dog Park
North Star Dog Park, nestled in the vibrant community of Madison, Wisconsin, offers a dedicated space for your canine companions to socialize, exercise, and enjoy the freedom of off-leash play. For many Wisconsin dog owners, finding a safe and accessible environment for their furry friends is a top priority, and North Star Dog Park aims to provide just that. While it may be a more modest option compared to some of the larger dog parks in the area, it serves as a valuable local resource for daily walks and quick romps. This park is a community-driven space, meaning the experience can often reflect the collective responsibility of its users.
As a city of Madison park, North Star Dog Park operates under the guidelines set by the Madison Parks Division, ensuring a degree of oversight and structure. It's designed to be a convenient spot for local residents to bring their dogs without having to travel too far. While some dog parks boast extensive amenities, North Star Dog Park focuses on providing the fundamental necessity: a fenced area where dogs can be unleashed and enjoy some much-needed freedom. Understanding the nuances of this local gem, including its strengths and areas where community participation can make a significant difference, is key to maximizing your visit.
For those living in or near the North Star neighborhood, this dog park presents a practical solution for daily exercise. Its intimate size means your dog won't get lost in a massive expanse, and it allows for easier supervision. Despite being smaller than some other options, many local users find it provides enough space for dogs to get in a good run and stretch their legs. It’s a place where regular visitors often recognize each other and their dogs, fostering a sense of community among local pet owners.
It’s important to note that, like many public dog parks, the quality of the experience can be influenced by user etiquette. Responsible pet ownership, particularly regarding waste disposal, is crucial for maintaining a pleasant and hygienic environment for everyone. North Star Dog Park is a testament to the idea that even a smaller, more no-frills facility can be a cherished part of a community's pet-friendly offerings when everyone contributes to its upkeep.
North Star Dog Park is conveniently located at 439 Milky Way, Madison, WI 53718, USA. This address places it within a residential area of Madison, making it particularly accessible for those living in the surrounding neighborhoods. For local residents, the park is often just a short drive or even a walk away, reducing the time spent commuting and maximizing playtime for your dog. Its position in a less congested part of the city means that traffic is generally manageable, and finding the park is straightforward.
Accessibility extends beyond just the physical location. The park is part of the larger network of Madison City Parks, which means it adheres to standard operating hours, typically from 4:00 AM to 10:00 PM, allowing for early morning and late evening visits. Parking is available, though it may be limited, particularly during peak hours. This limited off-street parking is something to consider, especially if you plan to visit during popular times like evenings or weekends. However, for many locals, the proximity and ease of reaching the park often outweigh any minor parking inconveniences.
The park's location on Milky Way is well-known within the immediate community. While it might not be a destination for dog owners from across the entire city, it serves its local demographic exceptionally well. This localized appeal is a key aspect of its accessibility, fostering a neighborhood feel where familiar faces and furry friends are common.
North Star Dog Park provides essential services designed to facilitate a positive off-leash experience for dogs and their owners. While it may not offer extensive amenities found in larger, more developed dog parks, it focuses on the core necessities.
-
Off-Leash Play Area: The primary service offered is a designated fenced area where dogs can run, play, and interact freely without the constraint of a leash. This is the main draw for dog owners seeking a safe space for their pets to burn off energy. The park spans approximately 2 acres, providing a decent amount of space for dogs to stretch their legs.
-
Poop Bag Dispensers: To encourage responsible pet ownership and maintain cleanliness, the park is equipped with poop bag dispensers. This service is vital for ensuring that owners have the necessary tools to clean up after their dogs, which is crucial for the park's hygiene and overall enjoyment for all visitors.
-
Garbage Cans: Conveniently located garbage cans are available for the disposal of dog waste, complementing the provision of poop bags. This helps keep the park tidy and prevents accumulation of waste, contributing to a cleaner environment.
-
Benches: For human companions, benches are provided within the park. These offer a place to sit, relax, and observe their dogs playing, as well as to socialize with other dog owners. While there may not be an abundance of seating, enough are present for a comfortable visit.
It is important for visitors to remember that North Star Dog Park does not currently offer amenities such as picnic tables, dedicated restrooms (porta-potties), or water fountains for dogs. Owners should plan to bring their own water for their pets, especially on warmer days, as sharing water is generally discouraged to prevent the spread of parasites and diseases.
North Star Dog Park, though smaller in scale than some other Madison area dog parks, offers several features that make it a notable local spot for dog owners.
-
Fenced Off-Leash Area: The park's main feature is its fully fenced perimeter, providing a secure environment for dogs to play off-leash. This gives owners peace of mind, knowing their dogs can explore and socialize freely without wandering off. The fencing is a critical safety element, particularly for energetic dogs or those still working on recall.
-
Decent Size for Local Use: At approximately 2 acres, North Star Dog Park offers a decent amount of space for dogs to run and play. While it might not be a vast, sprawling park, it’s large enough for a good exercise session and social interaction, especially for a neighborhood dog park. Many users appreciate that it's not overwhelmingly large, making it easier to keep an eye on their pets.
-
Community Atmosphere: Due to its local nature and consistent visitor base, the park often fosters a strong sense of community among regular users. It's a place where dog owners can connect, share tips, and build friendships, enhancing the overall experience for both pets and their humans.
-
Accessible Location for Nearby Residents: Its location on Milky Way makes it highly accessible for residents of the immediate North Star neighborhood and surrounding areas. This convenience means less travel time and more play time for your dog, fitting easily into daily routines.
-
Basic Conveniences: The presence of dog waste bag dispensers and garbage cans, while basic, are crucial features that contribute to the park's usability and cleanliness. These provisions highlight the park's commitment to responsible pet ownership within its confines.
While the park offers these practical features, visitors should be aware that it does not boast extensive amenities like separate small dog areas, water fountains for dogs, or covered shelters. Its highlights lie in its fundamental purpose as a convenient, fenced space for off-leash dog activity.
As a public city park managed by the Madison Parks Division, North Star Dog Park does not typically offer individual promotions or special discounts akin to a private business. Instead, access and usage are governed by the city's general dog park permit system.
To use North Star Dog Park, as well as other off-leash dog parks in Madison, dog owners are required to purchase a dog permit. These permits can be obtained online or by calling the Madison Parks Division directly. The current fee structure for these permits is as follows:
-
Daily Pass: $8.00
-
Annual Pass: $43.00
-
Annual Senior (65+) & Disabled Pass: $20.00
-
Annual Military/Veteran Pass: $20.00
An annual permit is valid from the time of purchase through December 31st of the year for which it's purchased. This permit is also part of the Cooperative Dog Park Program, which means it is also valid for use in Dane County Parks, City of Sun Prairie parks, and City of Middleton parks, offering broader access to off-leash areas across the region.
Beyond the permit, dog owners in Madison are also required to have a valid dog license for all visiting dogs. City of Madison residents can purchase these through the City of Madison Treasury Office. Dogs visiting from other areas are welcome with proper licenses and/or vaccinations from their respective towns or municipalities. Park rangers may request proof of these at any time.
While there are no "promotions" in the traditional sense, the annual pass offers a significant cost saving for regular users compared to daily passes, essentially acting as a value-based offer for frequent visitors. Keeping an eye on the Madison Parks Division website or signing up for their newsletters might occasionally provide information on community events or initiatives related to dog parks, though these are not typical promotional discounts.

Nov 23, 2024 · Brad CanardI was impressed at how many of our fur friends were out today. The park was a quaint jog. Not huge, just enough for a few laps and a leg stretch though. The unimpressive part were all the poop bombs. This littler park alone had more bombs than any large park! Shame on you irresponsible dog owners. This alone will keep us from returning. This is a city of Madison park. There is a fee to use the park. I'm not saying the city of Madison should be responsible for irresponsible dog owners. However, this is a paid for exercise Park that should be maintained.
Nov 23, 2024 · Karla CanardNice park, the people are not the nicest but they clean up behind themselves
May 26, 2025 · DyamondNorth Star Dog Park is a nice large grassy open space to get those zoomies and sniff curiosities out. It's about 0.3 miles around, with a little worn walking path around the fence line. There's not a lot to explore compared to other parks, but it does the trick if you just need a place to let your dog run, sniff, or play. There's only one picnic table, and it's mounted abnormally high, so it's not very accessible to everyone. I'm tall with long legs and I have difficulty comfortably sitting at it. However, they just recently provided 2 plastic outdoor chairs, so hopefully they stay there and get replaced if they ever break. There's no water source, so bring your own. Like all dog parks, poop bags are provided. The park is right next to North Star Park and is accessible with fence doors in 3 places. Owners that I've encountered here are very respectful and I've never seen a dog fight at this park. Overall I would recommend this park!
Aug 14, 2022 · Rebecca FincutterOkay dog park, wish there were benches or chairs to sit on while the dogs played. Also a drinking fountain to get the dogs water would be great! This is very much a no frills park.
