This park isn't just a place for dogs to run; it's a vibrant community hub where canine companions and their human counterparts can truly thrive, enjoying the freedom and joy of the outdoors.

What truly sets Warner Park Dog Park apart is its impressive size and diverse terrain. Spanning 8 acres, it offers ample room for dogs of all sizes and energy levels to explore. Unlike smaller, more confined dog parks, Warner Park provides long paths for energetic runs, shaded wooded areas for cooler excursions, and even direct access to the water for dogs who love to swim. This variety ensures that every visit can be a new adventure, keeping your furry friend engaged and happy.

The park's location within the larger Warner Park complex adds to its appeal. Beyond the dedicated dog area, the surrounding park offers a plethora of amenities, though it's important to remember that dog park rules apply specifically within the designated off-leash zone. The shared spaces encourage a broader community feel, making it a place where families, individuals, and their pets can enjoy a day out together in one of Madison's most beloved green spaces.

Regular visitors consistently rave about Warner Park Dog Park, often citing it as their "absolute favorite" in Madison. This address places it on the north side of Madison, making it easily accessible for residents across various parts of the city and surrounding communities. The park is part of the larger Warner Park, a well-known and significant recreational area in Madison, which helps with its recognition and ease of navigation.

Accessibility is a key advantage for Warner Park Dog Park. Situated with a path along the water, it offers beautiful views and a refreshing environment, enhancing the overall experience for visitors. The expansive nature of Warner Park itself means there is generally ample parking available, though it's important to be aware that during major events like Madison Mallards baseball games, parking within the broader Warner Park area can become more challenging. However, the dog park's dedicated section usually allows for reasonable access.

As a City of Madison park, Warner Park Dog Park operates with consistent hours, typically from 4:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily. This extensive timeframe allows for flexibility, accommodating early morning runs, midday strolls, and evening play sessions, fitting into various local schedules. The park's integration within a larger municipal park system also means it benefits from city maintenance and oversight, contributing to its generally well-kept condition.

For those traveling by public transportation or bicycle, Warner Park is usually well-connected, offering alternative ways to access the dog park. Its location away from the immediate downtown bustle means it often provides a more serene and less congested experience compared to some urban dog parks, while still being easily reachable for a large segment of the Madison population.

Services Offered

Warner Park Dog Park provides a range of services aimed at ensuring a positive and functional off-leash experience for dogs and their owners. While some services are direct provisions, others are facilitated by the park's design and features.

  • Expansive Off-Leash Area: The core service is an 8-acre dedicated space where dogs can run, play, and interact freely without leashes. This generous size allows for diverse activities, from long-distance running to casual sniffing and socializing.

  • Water Access for Dogs: A significant highlight is the direct access to the lake, specifically Lake Mendota. Dogs who enjoy swimming can safely enter the lower sections of the lake, offering a unique opportunity for water play and cooling off, especially during warmer Wisconsin months.

  • Poop Bag Dispensers and Waste Receptacles: To maintain cleanliness and promote responsible pet ownership, the park is equipped with dispensers for dog waste bags and strategically placed garbage cans for easy disposal. This fundamental service is crucial for keeping the park hygienic and enjoyable for everyone.

  • Separated Area for Smaller/Older Dogs: The park features a dedicated, fully fenced play area specifically for smaller and older dogs. This thoughtful provision ensures a safer and more comfortable environment for less active or more vulnerable canines, allowing them to play without being overwhelmed by larger, more boisterous dogs.

  • Shaded Wooded Areas: The presence of shaded wooded areas within the dog park offers natural relief from the sun, providing cooler spots for dogs and owners to rest, particularly on hot days. This adds to the comfort and usability of the park for extended visits.

  • Designated Paths for Exploration: With a beautiful path along the water, the park encourages exploration and provides distinct routes for walking and running. This design allows for varied exercise routines and scenic strolls.

It's important for visitors to remember that while the park offers lake access, dog owners should still bring their own fresh drinking water for their pets, as shared water bowls can sometimes pose health risks. Overall, the services at Warner Park Dog Park are geared towards creating a comprehensive and enjoyable outdoor experience for the local canine community.

Features / Highlights

Warner Park Dog Park is renowned among Madison locals for several outstanding features that make it a top-tier destination for dog owners.

  • Expansive 8-Acre Layout: One of its most significant highlights is its generous size. Covering 8 acres, the park offers vast open spaces for dogs to run freely, chase balls, and truly stretch their legs. This ample room contrasts with many smaller urban dog parks, providing an unparalleled sense of freedom for energetic pups.

  • Beautiful Lakeside Access: A major draw is the direct water access to Lake Mendota. Dogs can enjoy splashing, swimming, and cooling off in the lake, making it an ideal spot during warmer months. The scenic path along the water adds to the park's beauty, offering lovely views for human companions.

  • Partially Fenced with Natural Barriers: While described as partially fenced, the park strategically utilizes natural barriers, including the lake itself, to define the off-leash area. This design allows for a more natural feel while still providing boundaries for safety. There is also a separate fully fenced area for smaller and older dogs, ensuring safety for all.

  • Diverse Terrain for Exploration: The park boasts a mix of open grassy fields, shaded wooded areas, and waterfront sections. This varied terrain encourages exploration and provides different environments for dogs to engage with, keeping their visits interesting and stimulating.

  • Vibrant Community Atmosphere: Regular users often describe the park as a lively hub where both dogs and their owners form connections. It's a place to meet friendly faces, share experiences, and for dogs to build lasting play relationships, fostering a genuine sense of camaraderie among local pet parents.

  • Year-Round Appeal: Loved by locals even in winter, the park remains "on and poppin'" as one reviewer noted, offering a beautiful path for walks regardless of the season. Its natural beauty adapts well to changing weather, providing an inviting space year-round.

These features collectively make Warner Park Dog Park a standout choice in the Madison area, providing a comprehensive and highly enjoyable outdoor experience for dogs and their owners.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a public facility managed by the City of Madison Parks Division, Warner Park Dog Park does not offer individual promotions or discounts in the traditional sense. Instead, its access and usage are integrated into the broader Madison dog park permit system, which provides excellent value for local dog owners.

To utilize Warner Park Dog Park, along with other designated off-leash areas in Madison, dog owners are required to purchase a valid dog permit. These permits can be conveniently obtained online or by contacting the Madison Parks Division directly via phone. The current fee structure for these permits is as follows:

  • Daily Pass: $8.00 - Ideal for occasional visits or those trying out the park for the first time.

  • Annual Pass: $43.00 - This is the most cost-effective option for regular users, valid from the time of purchase through December 31st of the calendar year.

  • Annual Senior (65+) & Disabled Pass: $20.00 - A reduced rate is available for eligible seniors and individuals with disabilities.

  • Annual Military/Veteran Pass: $20.00 - A special rate is offered to honor military personnel and veterans.

A significant benefit of these permits is their participation in the Cooperative Dog Park Program. This means that a single permit from Madison Parks is also valid for use in designated dog parks within Dane County Parks, the City of Sun Prairie, and the City of Middleton. This inter-municipal agreement effectively broadens the range of off-leash opportunities available to permit holders across the greater Madison area.

In addition to the park permit, all dogs visiting Warner Park Dog Park (and other Madison City Parks) must possess a valid dog license. Madison residents can secure their dog licenses through the City of Madison Treasury Office. For dogs visiting from other areas, proper licensing and up-to-date vaccinations from their home municipality are required. Park rangers have the authority to request proof of these at any time, ensuring the health and safety of all park users.

We're all coming out of our gopher hole and taking the pooches to the park. Truth be told this park was on and poppin' all winter long. This park is among our favorites. It's such a nice park. I can't say it enough.

This is a big dog park. There is also a small dog enclosure. A river/pond form one side of the dog area. There are a few areas where the dogs can go for a swim if they are so inclined. I like walking along and among the trees, which are mostly along the water. I appreciate that there are free poop bags at both entrances as well.

Great dog park. Lots of shaded wooded areas and multiple spots for your dog to take a dip in the water. You can check the Madison Parks website for algae status. There is a smaller area for small/geriatric dogs.

Warner Dog Park has very large small dog and large dog areas, access to swimming, and shaded paths along the water front for when it's hot. Not to mention it's natural beauty and wildlife. We love going there!
