In this comprehensive article, we'll provide you with all the essential details about Monona Dog Park. Location and Accessibility

Monona Dog Park is situated at 851 Femrite Dr, Monona, WI 53716, USA. Its location at the corner of Femrite Drive and Edna Taylor Parkway, right next to the Public Works Garage, makes it relatively easy to find within the city of Monona. This convenient spot serves local residents well and also acts as an ideal "pit stop" for travelers with dogs along major routes.

The park is generally accessible during standard daylight hours, often from early morning until late evening (e.g., 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM according to some listings). Parking is convenient and free, typically available on the street right next to the park. This ease of access contributes significantly to its popularity.

As a municipal park, Monona Dog Park has specific requirements for use. Dogs must wear a current municipal dog license tag, which can be purchased at Monona City Hall. For residents of Monona, the dog park is free to use if they have this current municipal dog license. For visitors from outside Monona or those who also frequent other dog parks in Dane County, a separate Dane County Dog Park Permit may also be required. This permit is valid for use in Dane County Parks, City of Madison Parks, City of Sun Prairie parks, and City of Middleton parks. It is always recommended to check with the City of Monona or Dane County Parks for the most current permit requirements and fees. Dogs must remain on a leash until inside the gated park area.

Services Offered

Monona Dog Park, while compact, offers essential services to ensure a pleasant and functional off-leash experience:

  • Off-Leash Play Area: The primary service is providing a designated, fenced area where dogs can run freely and safely without being on a leash, promoting vital physical activity and socialization.
  • Water Fountain: A convenient water fountain is available, ensuring that dogs (and their humans) can stay hydrated, especially during warmer weather. Reviewers specifically mention "almost always fresh water."
  • Waste Management: "Poop and scoop is mandatory," and the park is equipped with designated receptacles for waste, encouraging responsible clean-up and maintaining a clean environment. While not explicitly stated, dog waste bags are usually available at well-kept parks.
  • Resting Areas: The park provides "a couple resting areas," likely benches or shaded spots, allowing owners to relax comfortably while their dogs play.
  • Community Toy Sharing: Reviewers note "lots of shared toys to be had," fostering a playful atmosphere and reducing the need for every owner to bring their own toys.

Features / Highlights

Monona Dog Park, though described as "small," boasts several features that contribute to its charm and functionality:

  • Cleanliness and Maintenance: A consistent highlight from customer reviews is that the park is "always clean" and "well kept." The grass is "cut nicely," indicating diligent maintenance.
  • Friendly Atmosphere: Both dogs and people are frequently described as "always friendly," creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for newcomers. This fosters positive social interactions.
  • Adequate Space for Running: Despite being small, reviewers affirm there's "plenty of space for your baby to run around" and it's "perfect place for my doggies to stretch their legs and run around." This suggests efficient use of the available area.
  • On-Site Water Source: The availability of a water fountain for dogs is a significant convenience, ensuring dogs stay hydrated during their playtime.
  • Convenient Resting Spots: The presence of "a couple resting areas" (benches/shelters) allows owners to supervise comfortably.
  • Shared Toys: The presence of community toys adds to the fun and encourages interaction among dogs.
  • Free Street Parking: Easy and free parking directly adjacent to the park enhances its accessibility and convenience.

Promotions or Special Offers

As a municipal park operated by the City of Monona, Monona Dog Park does not offer traditional commercial "promotions" or "special offers." Its value proposition lies in providing a free and accessible community amenity for licensed dogs.

However, there are specific requirements for its use that serve as the "offer" of access:

  • Monona Municipal Dog License: For residents of Monona, the park is "free to residents who have a current municipal dog license." This license must be obtained annually from Monona City Hall and requires proof of current rabies vaccination. There may be a late fee for licenses not obtained by a specific date (e.g., March 31).
  • Dane County Dog Park Permit (Optional, but Recommended for Broader Access): While Monona's park may not explicitly require a Dane County permit for its use, many dog owners in the area also visit other dog parks within Dane County, which do require this separate permit. This permit allows access to all eight off-leash dog recreation areas within the Cooperative Dog Park Program (Dane County Parks, City of Madison Parks, City of Sun Prairie Parks, and City of Middleton Parks). The annual cost for this permit varies (e.g., $45 for the first resident dog, $30 for additional resident dogs).

The "promotion" is the consistent provision of a clean, friendly, and accessible off-leash environment for local dogs. For the most accurate and current information on licensing and permit requirements, residents should contact the City of Monona directly.

For dog owners in Monona, Wisconsin, and even those simply passing through the Madison area, Monona Dog Park stands out as an exceptionally suitable and highly valued local amenity. Despite its description as "small," its consistent positive attributes make it a reliable and enjoyable destination for canine companions and their human friends.

A key factor in its suitability is its unwavering cleanliness and excellent maintenance. Reviewers frequently praise the "well kept" grounds and "nicely cut grass," which directly translates to a more pleasant and hygienic environment for both dogs and people. This attention to detail is crucial for ensuring a safe space where dogs can play without encountering hazards and owners can relax.

The park's friendly atmosphere is another significant draw. The consistent feedback about "friendly people and dogs" creates a welcoming community vibe, which is vital for both canine socialization and for owners to connect with fellow dog lovers. This supportive environment can be particularly beneficial for new dog owners or those seeking to improve their dog's social skills.

Furthermore, the practical amenities, though not extravagant, are highly appreciated. The on-site water fountain is a crucial convenience, especially during warmer weather, ensuring dogs stay hydrated. The "couple resting areas" and the availability of shared toys enhance the comfort and enjoyment for all visitors. Its role as a perfect "pit stop for a road trip" also highlights its accessibility and utility for a broader audience beyond just daily local users.

While a municipal dog license is required for Monona residents (making it "free" for them), this contributes to a regulated environment and helps ensure that dogs are vaccinated and properly cared for. The convenient, free street parking further adds to the park's ease of use.

In conclusion, Monona Dog Park may not be the largest facility in Wisconsin, but its commitment to cleanliness, its friendly community, and its essential amenities make it a highly suitable and cherished resource for locals. Well kept off-leash dog park. Although small it is always clean, there are lots of shared toys to be had and almost always fresh water. The people and dogs are always friendly. Parking is free and on street.

Really nice and clean. Except for the person(s) who do not think they have to pick up their dog's poop. The dog park has 2 big bowls to put water in. And if you forget to bring water, they have a stand when you first walk in with a jug of water. Plus bags and gloves to pick up your dog's poop. There are 2 benches(one in the shade) to sit on and relax. There are also some tennis balls, and a hurdle like thing for the dogs to play with. My baby girl Bella loves the park!!!

Small park so it's easy to keep tabs on your dogs. A steady flow of dogs using the park. Tt's a grassy corner lot so this is the place to come when you dog wants to interact with other dogs or have a little space to run around.

I love this dog park and so does my dog!! It's small enough to see him at all times, but big enough for him to get his exercise. We enjoy the "regulars" and their owners too. My only issue lately is I see alot of dog waste not being cleaned up. Come on, people, the bags are provided for you!! Be respectful.
