This is one of the nicest parks I’ve been to. Everyone is very respectful with their dogs and kids have a playground next to it so that they aren’t getting bumped by dogs playing. I always park on the red dirt outside the entrance door, I see gov and pov on there all the time. The dogs think it has the best smells, and a couple spots to dig even. Excellent park

Welcome to Garden of the Dogs

For military families and authorized personnel at Peterson Space Force Base and in the surrounding Colorado Springs area, finding a top-tier dog park is essential for the well-being of their furry companions. Garden of the Dogs stands out as a highly regarded destination, offering a dedicated and well-maintained off-leash environment where dogs can exercise, socialize, and thrive. This article provides an in-depth look at what makes Garden of the Dogs a cherished resource for the local pet-owning community.

Garden of the Dogs is a spacious and thoughtfully designed off-leash area located on Peterson Space Force Base. It provides a secure and expansive environment where dogs can run freely, interact with other canines, and burn off energy without the constraint of a leash. The park is often praised by visitors for its welcoming atmosphere and the respectful nature of both dog owners and their pets. One of the unique aspects highlighted by users is the park's natural terrain, including "red dirt" areas that dogs enjoy for their smells and even for a bit of digging, allowing for natural canine behaviors. While some dog parks can feel cramped or overly crowded, Garden of the Dogs offers a generous size, ensuring plenty of room for active play and reducing potential conflicts. Its location adjacent to a children's playground is also well-planned, providing a clear separation so that kids can play safely without being interfered with by exuberant dogs. This careful consideration for both human and canine visitors contributes to the park's reputation as one of the nicest and most enjoyable dog parks in the region.

Location and Accessibility

Garden of the Dogs is located on Stewart Ave, Peterson Space Force Base, CO 80914, USA. As it is situated on a military installation, access to the park is generally restricted to individuals with valid Department of Defense identification (e.g., military personnel, their families, retirees, and authorized contractors). Visitors without base access would typically need to be sponsored or have a valid reason for entry. It is crucial to verify current base access policies and requirements before planning a visit.

The park boasts generous operating hours, being listed as open 24 hours from Monday to Sunday, providing flexibility for pet owners with various schedules. While some reviews mention challenges with parking, noting the lack of dedicated "car parking" and the need to park on the red dirt outside the entrance, many users report seeing both government (GOV) and privately owned vehicles (POV) parked in these areas without issues. It is important to adhere to all base parking regulations. The park’s location on Peterson Space Force Base means it benefits from the overall security and maintenance standards of the installation. For those with base access, its presence offers a convenient and secure option for their dogs' recreational needs within their community.

Services Offered

Garden of the Dogs provides essential services aimed at facilitating a safe, enjoyable, and clean off-leash experience for military families and authorized personnel.

  • Spacious Fenced Off-Leash Area: The core service is a large, securely fenced enclosure where dogs can run, play, and socialize freely. This ample space minimizes overcrowding and allows for vigorous activity.
  • Natural Terrain for Exploration: The park's natural surface, including red dirt areas, offers varied smells and spots for digging, catering to dogs' natural instincts for exploration and sensory enrichment.
  • Dedicated Play Space: While amenities like water fountains are not explicitly mentioned in all reviews, the primary focus is on providing a large, open area for dogs to simply be dogs and play.
  • Waste Receptacles: Although not explicitly detailed in provided reviews, public dog parks typically provide waste disposal bins to encourage owners to clean up after their pets, maintaining hygiene. (It is always advisable for owners to bring their own waste bags.)
  • Community Interaction: The park fosters a respectful community among dog owners, providing a positive environment for both canine and human socialization.
Features / Highlights

Garden of the Dogs boasts several unique features that make it a highly regarded and valued asset for the Peterson Space Force Base community.

  • Exceptional Respectful Community: A significant highlight is the "very respectful" atmosphere among dog owners. This contributes to a positive and safe environment for all dogs and visitors, fostering a sense of community.
  • Large, Expansive Area: The park is described as "a good size park" with a "huge" fenced area, providing plenty of room for dogs to run, play, and burn off energy without feeling confined.
  • Natural Play Elements: The presence of "red dirt" that dogs "think has the best smells" and "a couple spots to dig" allows for natural canine behaviors and sensory enrichment, making playtime more engaging.
  • Separation from Children's Play Area: The thoughtful design ensures that the dog park is situated "next to" a children's playground but in a way that prevents dogs from "getting bumped by kids playing," ensuring safety for both groups.
  • Secure and Fenced: Being a fenced area, it provides a secure environment for off-leash play, giving owners peace of mind.
  • Convenient Location for Base Personnel: For those living or working on Peterson Space Force Base, having a dedicated and high-quality dog park directly on base offers unparalleled convenience.
Promotions or Special Offers

As a facility located on a military installation and provided for the benefit of service members and authorized personnel, Garden of the Dogs does not offer commercial promotions, discounts, or special offers in the traditional business sense. Access to the park is part of the amenities provided to those with base privileges. There are no entrance fees, membership requirements, or specific deals associated with using the dog park.

The primary "promotion" of Garden of the Dogs lies in its consistent availability as a well-maintained, secure, and spacious public space for authorized dog owners. Any dog-related events or programs that might occasionally take place at the park would typically be organized by the Peterson Space Force Base Force Support Squadron (FSS) or military family readiness groups. These events would be communicated through official base channels. For everyday use, the park remains a reliable and cost-free option for eligible locals to provide their dogs with essential exercise and socialization within a secure community.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

Garden of the Dogs is an exceptionally suitable and highly valued asset for dog owners who are part of the Peterson Space Force Base community in Colorado Springs. Its unique attributes directly cater to the specific needs and preferences of this local population.

Firstly, for military families and authorized personnel living or working on base, the convenience of having a spacious, secure, and well-maintained off-leash dog park directly within the installation is unparalleled. This eliminates the need for external travel, providing a safe and accessible option for daily dog exercise and socialization within their immediate community.

This is particularly important in a transient military community, where building connections is key.

While some reviews highlight the lack of dedicated paved parking and an internal water fountain, the benefits of a large, secure, and community-focused space often outweigh these minor inconveniences for authorized users. The strategic separation from the children's playground also demonstrates thoughtful planning, ensuring safety for all base residents. For those with access, Garden of the Dogs is not just a dog park; it's an integral part of the quality of life on Peterson Space Force Base, providing an essential amenity for the beloved canine members of their families and fostering a thriving, pet-friendly environment in Colorado.

The park is fine, but there is no parking for cars. We have a basset hound. We could walk her there, but she would be too tired to play once she arrived. Also, a water fountain for the dogs would be great! Our last duty station had huge dog parks with water fountains for the dogs. It was great because we didn't have to bring our own.

Our only complaint was there was no water tap for the dogs. If it's a hoot day, just bring some for the dogs. Oh, and all the benches they have, none are in the shade! Other than that everything was pretty nice. Nice neighborhood and people using the park. It's on base so you need access. Nice for the dogs to run around and get some energy out.

Needs to be better maintained and users need to be more responsible. Lots of poo and lots of holes where people just let their dog have at it. Also, lots of toys left behind.

Doesnt always have doggy bags but it is an owners responsibility to pick up poop and it's rarely ever done. They also really need to put in a water bowl for the dogs. I bring water most times but it would be a great addition.
