Centre Barkway is a fantastic addition to the growing area of parks under the Colorado Centre. Originally intended to have schools, shopping centers, appartment complexes and more this area died out after the builders and contractors ditched and the housing market tanked. Centre Barkway has everything a small dog park needs. A double gate that acts like a staging area for your pet. A small dog section. A fake hydrant. Doggie poo bags. The one thing it doesNOT have is a clear way to get into this park. You have to either cross the drainage ditch or skirt the small deertrail footpath next to the chain link fence.

Welcome to Centre Barkway

Introduction / Overview

For dog owners in the growing Colorado Centre area of Colorado Springs, Centre Barkway offers a practical and much-appreciated spot for their furry friends to stretch their legs. Located at 9696 Flagstone St, Colorado Springs, CO 80925, this park is a testament to the ongoing development of recreational spaces within the Colorado Centre community. While the area itself has seen its share of developmental shifts, Centre Barkway has emerged as a functional and accessible dog park, providing "everything a small dog park needs." It is a fully fenced off-leash area designed to offer a secure environment for canine exercise and socialization. Unlike expansive natural dog parks, Centre Barkway is a compact and efficient space, making it ideal for quick visits and providing a dedicated spot for local dogs to burn off some energy. It's a valuable addition to the neighborhood, offering a controlled environment for pups to play and for owners to connect with fellow pet parents.

Location and Accessibility

Centre Barkway is situated at 9696 Flagstone St, Colorado Springs, CO 80925, USA. It is part of the larger Colorado Centre development, located near the skate park. While the address is clear, some local users have noted that the "clear way to get into this park" might require some navigation, advising visitors to "either cross the drainage ditch or skirt the small deertrail footpath next to the chain link fence." This suggests that while easily locatable by address, the immediate approach may not be as straightforward as larger, more established parks. For residents of Colorado Centre and nearby areas, it is a highly accessible neighborhood park, likely a short drive or even a walk for many. Ample street parking is generally available in the vicinity, making it convenient for those arriving by car. Despite the minor access nuance, its presence provides a valuable local amenity that enhances convenience for daily dog outings in this part of Colorado Springs.

Services Offered

Centre Barkway is designed to provide the essential amenities required for a functional and safe off-leash dog park experience, catering to the needs of local pet owners. While it operates as a smaller, more focused facility, its services address core requirements for dog recreation. Key services and provisions at Centre Barkway include:

  • Fenced Off-Leash Play Area: The park offers a secure, fenced space where dogs can run freely without the need for a leash, providing a dedicated area for exercise and play.
  • Double-Gated Entry System: A "double gate that acts like a staging area for your pet" is a crucial safety feature. This two-door system helps prevent accidental escapes when dogs are entering or exiting the park, especially beneficial for "escape artists."
  • Small Dog Section: The park includes a "small dog section," a thoughtful amenity that provides a separate, less intimidating space for smaller breeds or more timid dogs to play comfortably and safely.
  • Pet Waste Bag Dispensers: To encourage responsible pet ownership and maintain cleanliness, the park is equipped with "Doggie poo bags," making it easy for owners to clean up after their pets.
  • Trash Receptacles: Conveniently located trash cans are available for the disposal of pet waste and other litter, contributing to the park's overall hygiene.
  • Fake Hydrant: The inclusion of a "fake hydrant" adds a whimsical and functional element, providing a designated spot for male dogs to mark their territory.

Features / Highlights

Centre Barkway, while compact, boasts several key features that contribute to its utility and appeal for local dog owners in Colorado Springs. These highlights are focused on functionality and safety for a convenient dog park experience:

  • Essential Small Dog Park Amenities: The park is recognized for having "everything a small dog park needs," indicating a well-thought-out design that maximizes the available space for core dog park functions.
  • Secure Double Gate: The "double gate that acts like a staging area" is a significant safety highlight. This system provides a crucial buffer, preventing dogs from dashing out into potentially unsafe areas during entry and exit, especially appreciated by owners of active or easily distracted dogs.
  • Dedicated Small Dog Section: The presence of a "small dog section" is a vital feature for the community. It ensures that smaller breeds or more timid dogs have a safe and comfortable space to socialize and play without feeling overwhelmed by larger, more boisterous dogs.
  • Provision of Doggie Poo Bags: The availability of "Doggie poo bags" is a practical highlight that promotes responsible pet ownership and helps maintain the park's cleanliness, making it easier for everyone to do their part.
  • Proximity to Colorado Centre Area: Its location within the "growing area of parks under the Colorado Centre" makes it highly convenient for residents of this specific neighborhood, reducing travel time for daily dog walks.

However, it is important to note some challenges highlighted by user reviews. The park's surfacing is described as "all small gravel, no grass, and tons of sharp burrs." This can lead to issues with "burrs in their paws," causing discomfort or even limping for dogs. Users are advised to check their dogs' paws regularly after visits and consider protective paw wear if their dog is sensitive to rough or burr-prone surfaces. Additionally, the challenge of a "clear way to get into this park," potentially requiring navigation of a "drainage ditch or skirt the small deertrail footpath," points to an accessibility aspect that users should be prepared for upon their first visit.

Promotions or Special Offers

Centre Barkway, as a public dog park likely managed by the Colorado Centre Metropolitan District (CCMD) or a related local parks department, typically does not offer commercial promotions or special offers in the traditional sense, such as discounts or loyalty programs. Its primary "promotion" is the free and open access it provides as a community amenity. However, being part of a local community development, there might occasionally be community-organized events or initiatives that take place at or near the park. These could include neighborhood gatherings, pet-focused events organized by local groups, or community clean-up days. Any such activities would generally be advertised through the Colorado Centre Metropolitan District's official communications, local community bulletins, or relevant social media groups for residents in the Colorado Centre area. Dog owners interested in participating in community events or staying updated on local park news are encouraged to check these local sources regularly. The ongoing provision of this accessible and dedicated space for dog recreation serves as its continuous value to the local residents of Colorado Springs.

Conclusion: Why this place is suitable for locals

For residents of Colorado Springs, particularly those in the Colorado Centre area, Centre Barkway is a uniquely suitable and valuable asset for dog owners. Its primary suitability stems from its localized convenience; for many, it’s a quick and easy destination for a dog walk, eliminating the need for longer drives to more expansive parks. While it may be a "small dog park," it provides all the "needs" for a functional off-leash experience: a secure, fenced environment with crucial safety features like a "double gate," which offers peace of mind to owners concerned about their "escape artists." The dedicated "small dog section" is a particularly important amenity, ensuring that smaller or more timid dogs have a safe and comfortable space to socialize without being overwhelmed by larger, more energetic canines. The provision of "Doggie poo bags" highlights a commitment to cleanliness and encourages responsible pet ownership, fostering a better environment for all visitors. While the gravel surface and presence of burrs are noted drawbacks requiring vigilance from owners, and the park’s exact entrance might be a bit unconventional, these are manageable considerations for the benefit of having a dedicated, nearby space for daily exercise. Centre Barkway serves as an accessible, practical solution for local dog owners seeking a reliable, fenced area for their pets to play and socialize, making it a functional and appreciated part of the Colorado Centre community.

We took our small dogs there yesterday for the first time. It is all small gravel, no grass, and tons of sharp burrs. Both of my dogs were limping from burrs in their paws within five minutes, and showed no desire to play or explore the tiny space. The place they're trying to put a soccer field in is much better as a dog park!

This is a lovely dog park provided for the CCMD residents. It’s pea gravel so there’s no muddy paws and it’s always clean. The pathway to it isn’t the most accessible but it’s passable and it’s a great item to have for our community, my dogs love it!
