My puppy absolutely loves it. There is a separate dry park (small/large) and then an awesome fenced in beach down on the shore that is also roped off so they cannot swim too far. A hose was added near the bathrooms to wash off after play time. Other owners seem attentive to their dogs and no one seemed to bring aggressive ones in. There are people who bring toys and stuff in - so if your dog doesn’t 100% agree with drop it/leave it, you might irritate a few people. (Whoops - he’s a puppy)

Welcome to Friends of Alum Creek Dog Park
For dog owners across Ohio, especially those of us in the Lewis Center and greater Columbus area, finding that ideal spot where our furry companions can truly let loose, play, and even swim safely is a constant quest. The Friends of Alum Creek Dog Park, located within the expansive Alum Creek State Park, stands out as a truly unique and beloved destination. This isn't just any dog park; it's a versatile haven that offers both traditional dry play areas and, distinctively, a fantastic fenced-in beach for dogs to enjoy the water.
The Friends of Alum Creek Dog Park has been a long-standing and cherished resource for the Ohio dog-owning community. Its development, and continued support by the "Friends of Alum Creek Dog Park" organization, highlights a strong commitment to providing a high-quality, diverse environment for canine recreation. It’s a place that recognizes dogs' natural instinct to run, play, and cool off in the water, offering specialized areas to safely accommodate these activities. This thoughtful design has made it a go-to spot for active dogs and their attentive owners, fostering a vibrant and generally responsible community.
What truly sets this park apart for us Ohioans is the unparalleled opportunity for dogs to safely swim in a designated, fenced area. While many parks offer land-based play, very few provide a secure beach environment where dogs can splash and cool down. This unique feature, combined with separate dry play zones, ensures that Friends of Alum Creek Dog Park caters to a wide array of canine preferences and energy levels. It’s a place where puppies can discover the joy of water, seasoned swimmers can get their laps in, and all dogs can socialize in an environment that prioritizes their well-being and happiness.
Friends of Alum Creek Dog Park is conveniently located at 3993 Hollenback Rd, Lewis Center, OH 43035, USA. This address places it within the larger Alum Creek State Park, which is situated north of Columbus in Delaware County. Its location within a state park means it benefits from natural surroundings, ample space, and a generally peaceful setting, despite its popularity.
Accessibility to the park is straightforward for those traveling by car. It's well-marked within Alum Creek State Park, with clear signage guiding visitors to the dog park area. Ample free parking is typically available directly adjacent to the dog park entrance, making for easy arrival and departure. The park is generally open daily from dawn to dusk, aligning with typical state park hours, which provides extensive opportunities for visits throughout the day.
One of the key aspects of its accessibility is the distinct separation of the "dry park" and the "beach area." This means visitors can choose the type of environment best suited for their dog's play style. The beach area, while part of the larger park, is specifically "fenced in" and "roped off so they cannot swim too far," demonstrating a commitment to safety and controlled access, even for water play. While the park is very popular and can get busy, its sheer size helps accommodate the crowds, making it a viable option for many Ohio locals looking for a comprehensive dog park experience with water access.
Friends of Alum Creek Dog Park offers a comprehensive suite of services tailored to active dogs and their owners:
- Dual Play Environments: The park uniquely provides two distinct, fully fenced areas: a "separate dry park" and an "awesome fenced-in beach down on the shore." This allows dogs to engage in both land-based running and water-based swimming within secure boundaries.
- Dry Park Separation: Within the "dry park," there are typically separate sections for small dogs and large dogs. This crucial separation helps ensure safer interactions among dogs of different sizes and energy levels, accommodating a wider range of canine visitors.
- Fenced Dog Beach: A standout service is the large, fenced-in beach area that extends into Alum Creek. This section is specifically "roped off so they cannot swim too far," providing a safe and controlled environment for dogs to swim and cool off.
- Post-Play Wash-Off Station: A significant convenience for owners is the "hose was added near the bathrooms to wash off after play time." This allows owners to rinse off sandy or muddy paws (and bodies!) before getting back into their vehicles, promoting cleanliness.
- Waste Disposal Stations: The park is equipped with waste disposal bins and, typically, complimentary poop bags, encouraging responsible pet ownership and helping maintain the park's cleanliness.
- Restroom Access: Human visitors have access to "bathrooms" near the wash-off station, providing a necessary amenity for longer visits.
Friends of Alum Creek Dog Park boasts several key features and highlights that make it a premier destination for dog owners in Ohio:
- Unique Dog Beach Access: The most significant highlight is its expansive, "awesome fenced-in beach down on the shore." This allows dogs safe, off-leash access to the water for swimming and splashing, a rare and highly sought-after feature among dog parks in Ohio. The roped-off area ensures safety from going too far into the lake.
- Versatile Play Zones: The combination of a large dry play area (often with separate sections for small and large dogs) and the dedicated beach area provides exceptional versatility. Dogs can run and play on land, then cool off with a swim, catering to all energy levels and preferences.
- Post-Swim Wash Station: The convenience of a "hose added near the bathrooms to wash off after play time" is a much-appreciated feature, allowing owners to easily clean sandy or muddy paws before leaving the park, keeping cars and homes tidier.
- Attentive and Responsible Owners: While incidents can occur (as noted in one review), the general sentiment from visitors is that "other owners seem attentive to their dogs and no one seemed to bring aggressive ones in." This fosters a generally positive and responsible community atmosphere.
- Beautiful Natural Setting: Being part of Alum Creek State Park, the dog park benefits from a scenic natural backdrop, offering a more serene and expansive environment compared to typical urban dog parks.
- Spaciousness: Both the dry park and the beach area offer ample room for dogs to run, play, and explore, preventing overcrowding even on busy days.
As a public facility located within Alum Creek State Park, Friends of Alum Creek Dog Park primarily serves as a free recreational amenity for the community. Therefore, it typically does not feature commercial "promotions or special offers" in the traditional retail sense. Access to the dog park and its core amenities is generally open and complimentary, though state parks often have specific rules or regulations.
However, being supported by the "Friends of Alum Creek Dog Park" organization and part of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) State Parks system, there can be indirect benefits or community-driven activities:
- Volunteer Opportunities: The "Friends of Alum Creek Dog Park" organization is a volunteer group that works to maintain and improve the park. Participating in their volunteer days or contributing to their initiatives is a way for locals to directly support the park and ensure its continued quality. This is a form of engagement, if not a direct "promotion."
- Community Gatherings: The park's popularity and the general attentiveness of its owners often lead to informal gatherings or regular meetups among local dog enthusiasts. While not formal promotions, these foster a sense of community.
- State Park Programs: Alum Creek State Park itself might host various nature programs, recreational events, or educational sessions that visitors to the dog park might find complementary. While dogs on leash are permitted on many state park trails, specific dog-related events might occasionally be organized by the park system.
- Membership to "Friends" Group: While not a park "promotion," joining the "Friends of Alum Creek Dog Park" group might come with benefits like newsletters, early notification of volunteer days, or input on park improvements, contributing to the park's future.

While a past incident of an attack was noted, the general consensus from reviews points to a community of "attentive" and responsible owners, fostering a welcoming atmosphere. The park's vast size and natural setting within Alum Creek State Park further enhance its appeal, offering a more expansive and natural experience compared to typical urban dog parks. Jul 03, 2024 · Regina KrauseThe dog park itself is great. Ours dogs have been there several times and they’ve loved it. Yesterday, my daughter took Luna there to play. Luna was having a great time until another dog attacked her. The dog grabbed Luna on the back of her neck and started dragging her. She ended up with two puncture wounds on the back of her neck. It would have been worse but her harness saved her from more serious bites. The owners of the other dog took off while my, daughter, in hysterics, tried to attend to Luna. I’d like to thank all the other owners there that looked at Luna’s wounds and comforted my daughter until my wife and I could get there. I know accidents can happen. But to leave after your dog attacks another without staying to see if everything’s alright is unacceptable. We took Luna to an emergency vet who treated her wounds and gave her antibiotics.
Mar 30, 2025 · Tom BoydReally clean park LOVE THE WATER AREA FOR PETS BUT.... They should make a water park area for big dogs that are a little less social so they can get in the water too 😞 Still clean establishment and pretty scenery !
May 10, 2025 · Kristen BentsenThis is a wonderful dog park. My dog especially loved the water park. Well done. I just wanted to add a photo that I thought was funny. This was inside the dog park and is probably a first aid kit. Whomever put the flag up probably thought it was the American Red Cross but in actuality it is the flag of the Country of Switzerland 😂😂😂🇨🇭🇨🇭🇨🇭
Jul 20, 2024 · Kamie HartleyIt was a good time. Except for the one lady who thought my dog was being too rough with her little yappy dog. I thought they used to have a water area for little dogs like they do for the park area. They could use a bench or two in the shaded area.
