It’s a mediocre park at best. The biggest issue is just that there aren’t many people bringing their dogs here so there’s not much of a good experience for your pet to socialize. Also my dog was once bit on the face while she was there, so that wasn’t very cool. Overall, it’s a pretty underwhelming place. Mark Twain dog park is just 15 minutes north of here and that park is always busy with so many dogs, responsible pet owners who are super friendly, and it’s huge. Maybe this place will improve over time? But anyone who thinks this is a great dog park probably has just never been to an actual good one.

Welcome to Ferndale Dog Park (Membership Required)
For dog owners across Michigan, finding a dedicated and safe space for their furry companions to play and socialize is a top priority. In the heart of Ferndale, the Ferndale Dog Park stands as a local option designed to provide a secure environment for canine recreation. This article offers a comprehensive look at the Ferndale Dog Park, helping Michigan residents understand its offerings and determine if it's the right fit for their beloved pets.
Unlike some open public parks, the Ferndale Dog Park operates on a membership-required basis. This approach is intended to ensure a controlled environment, promoting the safety and well-being of all visiting dogs and their owners. While it means a bit of upfront effort, it also fosters a community of responsible pet owners. As with any dog park, the experience can vary, but the intention behind a membership-based system is often to create a more consistent and predictable play area for our four-legged friends.
The Ferndale Dog Park is conveniently situated at 1280 Hilton Rd & University St, Ferndale, MI 48220, USA. This central Ferndale location makes it easily accessible for residents within the city and surrounding communities. Its proximity to major roads helps ensure a straightforward journey for those driving. When planning your visit, keep in mind that the park is part of the larger Wilson Park, providing a familiar landmark for navigation.
Accessibility often plays a crucial role in how frequently a dog park is utilized. For those living in Ferndale, the park is likely just a short drive away, making spontaneous visits or regular exercise routines convenient. For visitors coming from further afield in the Michigan region, the clear address and central location within Ferndale simplify the trip. As a local dog park, its design is centered around serving the immediate community, making it a handy spot for many Michigan dog owners.
The Ferndale Dog Park, being a membership-based facility, offers specific services to its registered members. These services are designed to ensure a safe and well-maintained environment for dogs and their owners. The core offerings revolve around providing a designated space for off-leash play and socialization.
- Membership Access: The park is exclusively for registered members, requiring an annual fee and completion of an on-demand Dog Park Safety Course. This course aims to educate owners on park rules and dog behavior, contributing to a safer environment.
- Key Fob Entry: Members receive a key fob for secure, controlled access to the park, enhancing safety and limiting unauthorized entry.
- Designated Play Areas: The park features separate, fenced play areas for both large and small dogs. This separation helps ensure that dogs of varying sizes and play styles can interact comfortably and safely.
- Dog Water Stations: Hydration is key for active dogs, and the park provides dedicated water stations to keep your pup refreshed during their playtime.
- Waste Pickup Stations: To maintain cleanliness and hygiene, waste pickup stations with bags are available throughout the park, encouraging responsible pet ownership.
- Sitting Areas: For the comfort of human companions, benches and sitting areas are provided, allowing owners to relax while their dogs play.
- Urine-Resistant Shrubbery: The landscaping includes urine-resistant shrubbery, a thoughtful touch to help maintain the park's aesthetics and cleanliness over time.
The Ferndale Dog Park, as a dedicated facility for canine recreation, boasts several features and highlights that aim to enhance the experience for both dogs and their owners. These elements contribute to the park's overall functionality and appeal within the local Michigan community.
- Secure, Membership-Based Environment: The primary highlight is the membership requirement, which helps create a more predictable and often safer environment compared to open public spaces. This means a higher likelihood of encountering responsible pet owners who have committed to the park's rules.
- Dedicated Spaces for Different Dog Sizes: The separation of large and small dog play areas is a significant feature. This allows smaller or more timid dogs to play without being overwhelmed by larger, more boisterous canines, and vice versa.
- Convenient Access and Amenities: Features like key fob access, readily available dog water stations, and waste pickup bags demonstrate a focus on convenience and cleanliness. These practical amenities contribute to a more enjoyable visit.
- Focus on Safety and Responsibility: The mandatory Dog Park Safety Course underscores the park's commitment to safety and responsible pet ownership. This educational component is a key highlight, aiming to minimize incidents and promote positive interactions.
- Located within Wilson Park: Being part of a larger park system like Wilson Park provides a pleasant backdrop and potential for other nearby park amenities, though access to the dog park itself remains restricted to members.
Based on publicly available information, the Ferndale Dog Park primarily operates on a membership model with set fees for residents and non-residents. At present, there are no specific ongoing promotions or special offers explicitly advertised for reduced membership rates or free trial periods directly from the park's official channels. Membership fees are typically $40 for Ferndale residents and $65 for non-residents, plus a $10 key fob fee. These fees cover annual access and the required safety course.
However, it's always a good idea for interested individuals to check with the Ferndale Parks and Recreation Department directly. Sometimes, local parks and recreation departments might offer seasonal promotions, or there could be community events that provide opportunities to learn more about the park and its offerings. While not a direct promotion, the value of the membership comes from access to a dedicated, controlled environment for your dog's exercise and socialization.

May 17, 2025 · Devin McMullinGreat park! It’s changing a lot the years. In the past 3 years (since 2015) they have added a dog park, tore down a school, built 20 homes, removed a roller skate rink, not about to add a skate park. You can still go there and have a great time with the dog and Slackline!
Jan 16, 2019 · Mathew RileyCute fenced area for the dogs to run and play in. Public restrooms. Picnic area, playground, and soccer field. One star off because I found a bag of poop and a used ear swab. Bring hand sanitizer.
May 21, 2021 · Ethan HaddonAll star ratings are for the bathroom, not the establishment. The Ferndale Dog Park was the closest Google had to "Wilson Park". The bathroom here is a pretty common luxury outhouse. I have seen worse, but this is nothing special. The good thing about it is that people are already expecting it to be smelly... so if you can brave it yourself... go for it.... good luck.
Nov 07, 2022 · The Ferndale PooperMy dog loved it there. But we weren't supposed to go in it's only accessible to city residents. The only time we did enter some doggy parents saw her peering through the fence and whimpering because she wanted to play. They allowed us in. And she played til the others left. We are transplants from Arizona where dog parks are staples. We now live in Oak Park, and what they have here is a muddy UNFINISHED mess!!
