Great open space. Covered picnic table area. Pretty flat and well maintained. I wish people would stop bringing balls/toys into the park because it is really distracting for my dog and potentially dangerous if other dogs resource guard (also against the stated rules) 馃槙

Welcome to Red Oaks Dog Park
For dog owners across Michigan, especially those in Oakland County and the Metro Detroit area, finding expansive and well-managed spaces for their furry companions to play and socialize is a high priority. Red Oaks Dog Park, located in Madison Heights, is a shining example of such a facility. As part of the extensive Oakland County Parks system, this 5.2-acre parcel offers a generous, fully fenced environment where dogs can run freely, interact with other canines, and burn off energy in a safe setting. Opened with the well-being of local pets in mind, Red Oaks Dog Park has quickly become a beloved destination, celebrated for its openness and the variety of dogs and owners it attracts.
The park's design thoughtfully addresses the needs of different dog sizes and temperaments, ensuring a comfortable experience for all. Reviews consistently highlight its well-maintained grounds and the attentiveness of the owners who frequent the park, contributing to a positive atmosphere. While it's a fantastic spot for off-leash fun, visitors are also reminded of the importance of adhering to park rules to ensure everyone's enjoyment and safety. This balance of freedom and responsibility makes Red Oaks Dog Park a model amenity. This article will provide Michigan residents with a comprehensive guide to this excellent dog park, detailing its location, the services and features it offers, important entry information, and why it's a highly suitable choice for local dog lovers.
Red Oaks Dog Park is conveniently situated at 31353 Dequindre Rd, Madison Heights, MI 48071, USA. Its location in Madison Heights places it within Oakland County, making it easily accessible for a wide range of Michigan residents from surrounding communities such as Royal Oak, Troy, Warren, and Sterling Heights. The park is adjacent to the Red Oaks Waterpark, a well-known local landmark, which further aids in its discoverability.
Accessibility to Red Oaks Dog Park is generally excellent for those traveling by car. The park features a paved parking lot, providing ample space for visitors. While there are a few options for parking (some unofficial street parking might exist, as mentioned in a review, but the official paved lot is the best bet), the designated parking ensures convenience. For those who prefer public transportation, SMART bus routes operate along Dequindre Road and nearby major thoroughfares, offering connections for residents throughout Metro Detroit. Being part of the Oakland County Parks system means the park benefits from clear signage and established infrastructure. However, it is important for visitors to note that a daily or annual Oakland County Parks vehicle permit is required for parking, though the dog park itself is free to enter once within the park system. This structured entry system helps maintain the park's quality and ensures continued investment in its upkeep. The park's well-lit nature with "limited street light illumination for extended hours in fall and winter" also adds to its accessibility and safety during shorter daylight hours.
Red Oaks Dog Park offers a robust set of services and amenities designed to create a safe, clean, and enjoyable experience for dogs and their owners:
- Expansive Off-Leash Area: The core service is a large, fully fenced 5.2-acre enclosure where dogs can run, play, and socialize off-leash, providing ample space for vigorous exercise.
- Separate Small Dog Area: A crucial feature, the park includes a distinct, fenced-off section specifically for small dogs. This ensures a safer and less intimidating play environment for smaller breeds.
- Canine Drink-Filling Stations: The park is equipped with water stations designed for dogs, allowing owners to easily provide fresh water to their pets to keep them hydrated during play. Some reviews mention a pump, implying a fresh water source, but bringing a bowl for your dog is always a good idea.
- Covered Picnic Shelter: A picnic shelter provides a shaded area for owners to relax, socialize, and observe their dogs, offering respite from the sun or light rain.
- Waste Stations with Bags: To promote cleanliness and responsible pet ownership, waste stations with dog bags are typically available, encouraging owners to clean up after their pets. (Note: One older review mentioned a lack of bags, but current Oakland County Parks standards usually include these.)
- Dog Run Rotation: Oakland County Parks rotates the dog runs throughout the year to allow for turf restoration and maintenance, ensuring the ground remains in good condition and is not overused.
Red Oaks Dog Park boasts several impressive features that make it a premier destination for dog owners in Michigan:
- Large 5.2-Acre Space: Its generous size is a significant highlight, providing "Great open space" for dogs to truly stretch their legs and run without feeling confined. This ample room allows for diverse play activities and reduces overcrowding.
- Dedicated Small Dog Area: The presence of a separate, enclosed area for smaller dogs is a highly valued feature. It ensures that petite pups can play safely and comfortably, away from the more rambunctious play of larger breeds.
- Covered Picnic Table Area: The "Covered picnic table area" offers a convenient and comfortable spot for owners to rest, providing shade and shelter, which is especially appreciated during sunny or mildly inclement weather.
- Flat and Well-Maintained Grounds: Reviews consistently describe the park as "Pretty flat and well maintained." A flat, well-kept surface is safer for dogs to run on and more pleasant for owners to navigate. While some areas can get muddy after rain, this is common in natural-surface parks.
- Variety of Dogs and Owners: The park consistently attracts "a variety of dogs and owners who are watching their dog." This creates a dynamic and engaging social environment for both canines and humans, fostering community connections.
- Paved Parking Lot: The convenience of a dedicated, paved parking lot is a significant plus, ensuring easy access to the park.
- Limited Street Light Illumination: For those who visit during darker hours of fall and winter, the "limited street light illumination" extends usability, making it a viable option for after-work visits.
- Adjacent to Red Oaks Waterpark: Its location next to the popular Red Oaks Waterpark means there's additional infrastructure and potentially other amenities nearby, contributing to a more complete recreational outing.
- Multiple Enclosed Areas: While the primary setup is a large and small dog area, information suggests there can be "up to four fenced enclosures" which are rotated, allowing for turf rest and maintenance, further ensuring good ground conditions.
Red Oaks Dog Park is part of the Oakland County Parks system, and its "promotions" or "special offers" are primarily tied to the park entry fee structure and various community events hosted by Oakland County Parks.
As of voter approval of a millage request in November 2024, entry fees and car permits to all parks operated by Oakland County Parks have been eliminated for Oakland County residents. This means that if you are an Oakland County resident, you now enjoy free entry to Red Oaks Dog Park and other Oakland County day-use parks, a significant benefit for Michigan locals!
For guests who are not Oakland County residents, there is a suggested voluntary contribution to help maintain and improve the parks, though it's no longer a mandatory fee. Previously, non-Oakland County residents paid a $12 daily entry fee or a $50 annual fee. It's always best to check the latest policies on the Oakland County Parks official website for the most current information.
Beyond the entry policy, Oakland County Parks regularly hosts special events that may be considered "promotions" for dog owners. For example:
- Paws & Play Events: Oakland County Parks organizes "Paws & Play" events at various dog parks, including Red Oaks. These free events often feature activities, cooling stations, crafts, giveaways, and information tables from local vendors. For example, a "Paws & Play" event was scheduled for July 23rd at Orion Oaks Dog Park, but similar events are often held at Red Oaks.
- Breed-Specific Socials: The parks system also hosts "Furry Friends Socials" for specific dog breeds, providing a unique opportunity for owners of particular breeds to gather and socialize.
While the dog park itself doesn't offer direct discounts on services (as it's a public park), the value comes from free access for residents and the organized community events that enhance the dog park experience. Visitors should always ensure their dogs are licensed in Oakland County and have up-to-date vaccinations (Rabies, Distemper, Bordetella) as these are requirements for using the park facilities. The Oakland County Parks website is the best source for upcoming events and detailed entry requirements.
For Michigan residents seeking more information about Red Oaks Dog Park, its amenities, or Oakland County Parks policies, the following contact details are available:
- Address: 31353 Dequindre Rd, Madison Heights, MI 48071, USA
- Phone: (248) 858-0906 (This is the general contact number for the Oakland County Parks and Recreation Administrative Office. They can provide comprehensive information regarding all Oakland County Parks, including Red Oaks Dog Park rules, hours, and any specific inquiries.)
- Email: ocparks@oakgov.com (Another way to reach the Oakland County Parks administration for inquiries.)
The official website for Oakland County Parks, specifically the Red Oaks Dog Park section (oakgov.com/community/oakland-county-parks/parks-trails/red-oaks/red-oaks-dog-park), is an invaluable resource. It provides detailed information on park features, rules, upcoming events like "Paws & Play," and critical requirements such as dog licensing and vaccination guidelines. It is the most reliable source for up-to-date information on park operations and amenities.
For Michigan residents, particularly those in Oakland County and the surrounding Metro Detroit area, Red Oaks Dog Park represents an outstanding and highly suitable local amenity for their canine companions. Its substantial 5.2-acre size is a paramount advantage, offering "Great open space" that allows dogs of all sizes to truly run, play, and interact freely without feeling confined. This expansive environment is crucial for both the physical exercise and mental stimulation of active dogs.
The thoughtful design of the park, including separate fenced areas for small and large dogs, addresses a key concern for many owners, ensuring a safe and comfortable play experience for all temperaments and sizes. This distinction minimizes potential stress and maximizes enjoyment, making it a welcoming space for every dog and their human. The presence of a "covered picnic table area" and "canine drink-filling stations" further enhances the user experience, providing essential comfort and convenience for owners while their dogs play.
Moreover, being part of the Oakland County Parks system, Red Oaks Dog Park benefits from professional maintenance and consistent oversight. The commitment to "pretty flat and well maintained" grounds, along with the rotation of dog runs for turf restoration, speaks to the dedication to keeping the park in optimal condition. The recent elimination of entry fees for Oakland County residents, stemming from voter-approved millage, makes this high-quality park even more accessible and valuable as a free recreational resource for local taxpayers. This combines with the various community events, like "Paws & Play," organized by the parks system, to create a holistic and enriching experience beyond just an off-leash area. For any Michigan dog owner seeking a spacious, well-equipped, clean, and community-oriented place for their dog to thrive, Red Oaks Dog Park in Madison Heights is an exceptional choice.

Mar 27, 2025 路 Elizabeth VincentMy dog loves an open space and to play with other dogs! This park always has a variety of dogs and owners who are watching their dog. I wish there was more shade.
May 02, 2025 路 Jasmine JonesThis dog park is full of tail wags! The park is fairly simple with four pasture-type enclosures for dogs to have fun. There is even a specific, small dog run but dogs of all sizes are welcome in the other runs. There is often tennis balls to throw and chase but really the fun is in chasing each other! Always a sniffing-good time!!
Feb 20, 2022 路 Gabrielle EkstrumNo fee for admission or parking and a great group of people. Can't ask for more!
Mar 09, 2025 路 Aurora HinesOne of the few dog parks in the metro area that lets you pay for a pass without being a resident of that particular town. Love taking my pup here! She loves it too - 3 runs open for her to chase balls and socialize.
