It was very nice when it first opened. It went downhill very quickly. A lot of dog owners here are clueless and don't discipline their dogs, nor do they pick up after their dogs. Also, lots of negligent parents let their kids play on the equipment meant for dogs, so half of the equipment (see-saw, jump, etc.) has been broken since opening. The grass has turned mostly to dirt and mud, little to no maintenance done by the municipality. This could be such a wonderful dog park for the regulars who come here, if it was better maintained and people stop letting their 2-4 kids run loose and break things. Also, there was a dog attack in the past year, with the victim dog allegedly dying due to injuries. Be careful with bringing your dogs here. If you don't mind the drive, go to the dog parks at Montclair or Wood-Ridge instead.

Welcome to Elmwood Park Dog Park
For dog owners across New Jersey, providing a dedicated space for their furry companions to run, play, and interact freely is a cherished amenity. In Garfield, New Jersey, the Elmwood Park Dog Park, located at 921 River Dr, offers such a locale. This medium-sized dog park aims to provide an essential outlet for canine energy and a social gathering point for both dogs and their human companions. While it may have evolved since its initial opening, it remains a local option for New Jersey residents seeking an off-leash environment for their pets. This article will delve into what the Elmwood Park Dog Park offers, its location, and what local users can expect when they visit.
The Elmwood Park Dog Park is designed to serve as a convenient spot for local pet owners to exercise their dogs off-leash. In a state like New Jersey, where open spaces can sometimes be limited, dedicated dog parks play a crucial role in promoting canine well-being. This park aims to provide a secure, fenced area where dogs can engage in natural behaviors like running, chasing, and sniffing freely, which are vital for their physical and mental health. The presence of an agility course, as noted by visitors, suggests an initial intent to offer more than just a basic run, providing an opportunity for dogs to engage in stimulating activities. While user experiences can vary, the core purpose of the Elmwood Park Dog Park remains to be a readily accessible place for New Jersey's dog-owning community to foster healthy and happy pets.
The Elmwood Park Dog Park is situated at 921 River Dr, Garfield, NJ 07026, USA. This location places it conveniently within the borough of Garfield, making it easily accessible for residents of Garfield and surrounding towns in Bergen County, New Jersey. Its address on River Drive suggests it might be near the Passaic River, potentially offering a pleasant natural backdrop, although specific scenic details about the park itself are limited. As part of a municipal park system, it is likely that parking is available in the vicinity, which is a practical consideration for dog owners arriving by car. The straightforward address ensures that New Jersey locals can easily find and access this dog park for their daily or weekly visits, providing a practical solution for off-leash exercise close to home.
The Elmwood Park Dog Park offers a set of basic services for dog owners looking for an off-leash area:
-
Fenced Off-Leash Area: The primary service is providing a contained and fenced space where dogs can safely be off-leash, allowing them to run, play, and interact without the constraints of a leash.
-
Agility Course: The park includes an agility course, offering equipment like a see-saw and jumps. This provides opportunities for dogs to engage in stimulating physical and mental exercises beyond simple running, though the current condition of this equipment should be noted by visitors.
-
Shared Space for All Dog Sizes: Unlike some parks with separate sections, the Elmwood Park Dog Park appears to offer one shared space for dogs of all sizes. This means it's an environment where well-socialized dogs are a must, as large and small dogs will be interacting in the same area.
-
Open Space for Play: Despite some areas potentially turning to dirt, the park still offers open space for dogs to run and enjoy themselves, providing a vital outlet for their energy.
The Elmwood Park Dog Park presents several features and highlights for New Jersey dog owners, though it's important to consider both its intended design and user experiences:
-
Medium-Sized Layout: The park is described as "medium sized," suggesting it offers enough space for dogs to get a good run without being overwhelmingly large, which can be ideal for some dogs and owners.
-
Agility Equipment: The presence of an agility course (including a see-saw and jumps) is a notable feature, providing an opportunity for dogs to engage in more structured and stimulating play. While some equipment may be broken, its existence indicates a design intent to offer varied activities.
-
Community Integration: As a local municipal park, it integrates into the community, providing an accessible spot for local dog owners, potentially fostering neighborly interactions among pet parents.
-
Accessibility: Its location in Garfield makes it a convenient option for residents in the immediate area, reducing travel time for daily dog walks and play sessions.
-
Potential for Quiet Periods: Some reviews suggest the park may not be overly busy, even on a Sunday afternoon, which could be a highlight for dogs and owners who prefer a less crowded environment for play.
As a public municipal dog park in New Jersey, the Elmwood Park Dog Park typically does not offer commercial "promotions" or "special offers" in the retail sense. Access to the park is generally free for all residents and their dogs, provided they adhere to the local rules and regulations. The primary "promotion" for such a facility is the provision of a free, designated space for off-leash canine exercise, which is an invaluable service for dog owners in an urbanized area like New Jersey.
Any "special offers" or benefits would likely come in the form of community-driven initiatives:
-
Free Public Access: The most significant benefit is the lack of an entry fee, making a dedicated dog exercise space accessible to a wide range of New Jersey pet owners.
-
Community Hub: The park naturally serves as a gathering point for local dog owners, fostering informal social interactions and community building, which is an intangible, yet valuable, "offer."
-
Volunteer Efforts: While not a formal promotion, sometimes local dog owner groups or community organizations might initiate clean-up drives or fundraising efforts for park improvements. Participating in or benefiting from these efforts could be seen as a community-driven "special offer."

Jan 23, 2024 路 Richard YoonMedium sized dog park with an agility course. 60% covered in grass and leftover dog poo here and there. Not busy Sunday afternoon when I went there. My dog enjoyed the open space and the people there were nice. I would come back here the for agility course. Only one shared space for all sizes of dogs, so well socialized dogs is a must especially for all sizes.
Jul 11, 2021 路 Clint GalacNice place to take the dog for a sunny day and open area. Safe place and nice dog playground. Not busy most of the time. Most of the time empty 馃憤馃徎
Sep 24, 2022 路 Micheal AzmyWe take our pup there regularly because it鈥檚 5 minutes away and for the most part we like it. Would be nice to have the separation for the small and bigger dogs but everybody does seem OK with the mixed sizes most of the time. It would also be nice to have some type of water fountain.
Jul 09, 2022 路 Carol La Peruana ferrandoThis could be a great dog park. They don't take care of it. Dog bags are never filled, rocks, glass and garbage was in the dirt they just dumped in the park to fill holes. Its a shame great group of dogs and their people go here.
