Dog park was nice sized with lots of room for my husky to get up to full speed. Dog owners were attentive, always cleaning up after the pups, sharing water with the whole pack and keeping a decent handle on the pups.

Welcome to Ben Brenman Dog Park
For dog owners in Alexandria, Virginia, finding a spacious and secure location for their furry companions to truly stretch their legs and socialize is a top priority. Ben Brenman Dog Park, nestled within the expansive Ben Brenman Park, offers just such an environment. This dedicated off-leash area is a vital resource for the local canine community, providing ample room for dogs to run, play, and interact freely, all within a well-maintained setting.
Despite some navigational challenges highlighted by certain visitors, the park remains a popular choice, particularly for active breeds. It fosters a sense of community among pet parents who are committed to responsible dog ownership and the well-being of their beloved companions. For Virginia locals, Ben Brenman Dog Park represents a significant amenity, offering a blend of open space and a friendly atmosphere that makes it a highly desirable destination for daily dog park visits.
Ben Brenman Dog Park is located at 4800 Brenman Park Dr, Alexandria, VA 22304, USA. It is situated within the larger Ben Brenman Park, a significant green space in Alexandria's West End, near Cameron Station and Backlick Creek. While the park is clearly identified by its address, some past reviews highlight a common challenge regarding its direct accessibility.
One review noted that the GPS location might lead visitors to a general road for Ben Brenman Park trails, making it seem difficult to reach the dog park without crossing multiple lanes of traffic. However, other information indicates that "parking is available in the adjacent lot and along the street (free)" for Ben Brenman Park generally. It's crucial for first-time visitors to be aware that while the park itself is easily found, navigating to the dog park within the larger park might require a short walk and attention to footbridges or pathways, rather than driving directly up to the dog park entrance. The park is accessible by footbridge, including a southeast footbridge towards the railroad and over a stream.
As a public dog park managed by the City of Alexandria's Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities, Ben Brenman Dog Park focuses on providing core services essential for off-leash dog recreation. While it doesn't offer commercial services, its amenities cater directly to the needs of dogs and their owners:
- Designated Off-Leash Area: The primary service is providing a fenced, legally sanctioned space where dogs can run and play off-leash. This is vital for their physical exercise and social development, allowing for unrestrained movement in a controlled environment. The park is noted for being "fenced and lighted."
- Ample Space for Exercise: The park is described as "nice sized with lots of room" and "quite large, providing space for all dogs to play." This caters especially to energetic breeds like huskies, allowing them to "get up to full speed."
- Waste Management: The park is equipped with waste receptacles, and reviews praise owners for "always cleaning up after the pups." While not explicitly mentioned if bags are provided, the expectation for owners to clean up is clear, contributing to a well-maintained environment.
- Water Sharing (Community-Driven): Although a review noted "no water station although a couple of bowls are provided" and "be sure to bring water for your thirsty dog," other information states the park has "drinking water for dogs and humans." This suggests there might be variability or that community members often supplement by bringing and sharing water, a testament to the friendly atmosphere.
- Seating and Lighting: The park includes benches and picnic tables for owners to rest and supervise their dogs. It is also "lighted," enabling use after dark until the park closes, typically around 10 PM.
Ben Brenman Dog Park boasts several key features that make it a notable destination for dog owners in Alexandria:
- Large and Spacious Design: A consistent highlight is the sheer size of the dog park. It offers "lots of room for my husky to get up to full speed" and is described as a "nice sized" and "large" area. This is a major draw for owners of active breeds or those who prefer more open space for their dogs to roam.
- Fenced and Secure: The park is "fully fenced," providing a secure environment for off-leash play. This offers peace of mind to owners, knowing their dogs are contained within the designated area.
- Attentive Dog Owner Community: Reviews frequently praise the "attentive" dog owners who "always clean up after the pups" and "shar water with the whole pack." This strong sense of community responsibility fosters a positive and welcoming atmosphere.
- Mulch-Covered Area: The dog park typically features a "mulch covered" surface. While some dogs might prefer grass, mulch can be beneficial for drainage and reducing mud, making it usable in various weather conditions.
- Adjacent to Larger Park Amenities: Being part of the expansive Ben Brenman Park means visitors have access to a wealth of other amenities, including athletic fields, an amphitheater, a pond, playgrounds, and extensive hiking trails along Holmes Run Parkway. This allows for a combined outing for the whole family.
- Lighting for Extended Hours: The park is "lighted," which extends its usability into the evening hours, a significant convenience for owners who work during the day or prefer cooler temperatures for their dog's exercise.
- Picnic Tables and Benches: For the comfort of human companions, the park includes benches and picnic tables, providing places to rest and socialize while supervising their dogs.
As a public park amenity managed by the City of Alexandria, Ben Brenman Dog Park does not offer commercial promotions, discounts, or special sales. Access to the dog park is free for all users and their licensed, vaccinated dogs. The primary "promotion" here is the invaluable service it provides: a no-cost, convenient, and designated space for dogs to exercise and socialize within the urban environment of Alexandria.
Any "specials" or "offers" related to dog parks in Alexandria would typically involve city-wide events, such as pet adoption drives, community clean-up days, or dog-friendly festivals organized by the city's Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities. Residents are encouraged to check the City of Alexandria's official website or local community calendars for information on such events. Furthermore, the broader Ben Brenman Park hosts a bustling Farmers Market on Saturdays, which brings in additional visitors and community engagement.

Despite the noted challenges with direct parking access, the park's benefits, including a generally attentive community of owners who actively contribute to its cleanliness and a large play area, often outweigh this inconvenience for dedicated visitors. The availability of amenities like benches and the overarching context of the larger Ben Brenman Park with its diverse offerings make it a compelling destination for a holistic family outing. Ben Brenman Dog Park is a testament to the collective effort of the city and its residents to provide a functional and enjoyable space for dogs, making it a highly recommended spot for any Virginia local seeking a spacious and community-oriented environment for their beloved canine.

Jun 02, 2025 · Patrick TheobaldLiteral worst dog park in all of Alexandria! It's located off the side of a major road and has absolutely no parking next to it. As a matter of fact, the GPS location (which they're able to edit online if they need to, so yes it is their fault) leads you to a road that makes you believe it's going to a parking area designated for Park patrons. But it's not! It's literally just a random road going to the Ben Brennan Park trails. There's literally no way to get to the dog park unless you cross over six lanes of traffic and a median.
Jun 23, 2024 · Keakalani GoinsFirst time here, after the rains, and it was still nice enough for my boy to get a run! Plenty of grass area in addition to the wood chip area! And quiet park, all around!
Apr 05, 2024 · Al MoralesVery nice, clean and partially shaded dog park! Cross the bridge and you'll arrive to fenced in dog park with waterbowls. (BYOB) Picnic table and benches, well lit in the evening and at night. Also, just past dog park and pavilions, follow the trail down to the fun little creek and cool off the pups!
Jul 22, 2021 · Rose SchaumReally like this park. It's beautiful in the evenings. Nice paved trails to walk on. Well lit with playgrounds and a lake to walk around. It's quite with many benches for those who want to take a break between their walks. Well maintained and litter free.
