The park is very big, but the small dog area isn't secure due to a big gap in the gate that my Papillons could easily fit through. There's no grass, either, but I understand that grass would require constant maintenance. My only complaint is the insecure gate.

Welcome to Dog Run Park at Carlyle
For dog owners residing in and around Alexandria, Virginia, finding a convenient and dedicated space for our beloved canines to socialize and burn off energy is a key part of our daily routine. The Dog Run Park at Carlyle stands as a valuable urban amenity, providing a much-needed off-leash environment amidst the bustling city landscape. While it might be described as "small" or "tiny" by some, its presence in a dense urban area makes it a crucial resource for locals seeking a quick and accessible spot for their furry friends.
This dog park, nestled in the vibrant Carlyle neighborhood, offers a practical solution for city dwellers looking to give their dogs the freedom to roam without a leash. It embodies the essence of urban pet ownership – making the most of available space to foster community and provide essential services for our pets. For us Virginians, especially those in Northern Virginia where green spaces can be at a premium, the Dog Run Park at Carlyle represents a functional and often lively hub for canine activity. This article will explore the features, accessibility, and unique aspects of this Alexandria dog park, helping local pet parents understand why it might be the perfect fit for their dog’s needs.
The Dog Run Park at Carlyle boasts a highly accessible location within Alexandria, making it convenient for numerous residents. You can find it at 450 Andrew's Ln, Alexandria, VA 22314, USA. This address places it squarely in the Carlyle neighborhood, known for its mix of residential and commercial properties. Its proximity to major transportation hubs and routes is a significant advantage for local users.
One aspect to consider for accessibility, as noted by a reviewer, is that "both the Metro and the Amtrak/Mark/other rail lines go right by this park." While this proximity might result in "loud noises" from passing trains for dogs sensitive to sound, it also signifies its excellent connectivity within the greater Washington D.C. metropolitan area. For those relying on public transit, this can be a major convenience. In terms of parking, customer reviews indicate that there is "good parking but not a lot." This suggests that while parking is available, it might be limited, especially during peak hours. However, for a compact urban park, the presence of dedicated parking at all is a benefit. Its central location within Carlyle also means that many residents can reach the park via a short walk, reducing reliance on vehicles altogether and further enhancing its accessibility for the immediate community.
Dog Run Park at Carlyle provides a focused set of services and amenities, primarily centered on facilitating safe and convenient off-leash play in an urban environment. While it emphasizes functionality over sprawling natural landscapes, its offerings are practical and cater to the immediate needs of both dogs and their owners:
Fenced Off-Leash Areas: The park is "fully fenced" and offers designated areas for dogs to play off-leash. It is explicitly noted as having a "separate small dog area," which is crucial for the safety and comfort of smaller breeds, though a review mentions a "big gap in the gate" in the small dog area that could be a concern for very tiny dogs.
Double-Gated Entry: For enhanced safety, the park features a "double-gated entry for safe de-leashing." This system helps prevent dogs from bolting out of the park inadvertently as others enter or exit.
Water Access for Pups: A highly valued amenity, the park "does have water for the pups which is nice." This ensures dogs can stay hydrated during their playtime, especially important during Virginia's warmer seasons.
Benches: For the comfort of human companions, benches are available within the park, providing spots for owners to sit and supervise their dogs.
Trash Receptacles: The park provides "trash receptacles" for waste disposal, supporting cleanliness. However, customers are "warned to bring your doggie bags," indicating that while disposal is facilitated, bag availability might not always be consistent.
Gravel Surface: The park's surface is "gravel covered," which, as one reviewer noted, eliminates the need for "constant maintenance" that grass would require in a high-traffic area. While it means no grassy romping, it offers a durable and generally mud-free surface, except possibly after heavy rain.
Despite its compact size, Dog Run Park at Carlyle offers several distinctive features and highlights that make it a valuable resource for local dog owners in Alexandria:
Dedicated Small Dog Area: The provision of a separate area for smaller dogs is a significant highlight, catering to the safety and comfort of little breeds. While a user noted a potential security gap, the intention to segregate play is a strong positive for many owners.
Urban Convenience: Its central location in the Carlyle neighborhood makes it an exceptionally convenient option for residents who live nearby, reducing travel time and enabling frequent visits for exercise and socialization. For an urban setting, having any dedicated off-leash space is a major asset.
Water for Dogs: The presence of a water fountain for dogs is a highly appreciated amenity, ensuring pets can hydrate during their play sessions without owners needing to carry extra water bottles.
Friendly Community: While not explicitly stated in all reviews, the nature of dog parks often fosters a friendly atmosphere. With "good dog playmates" mentioned, it suggests a generally positive environment for canine and human interaction.
Proximity to Transportation: While the noise from nearby Metro and train lines can be a con for noise-sensitive dogs, it is a significant highlight for human accessibility, especially for those using public transportation. This makes it a feasible option for many city dwellers.
Gravel Surface for Practicality: The "gravel covered" surface, while lacking grass, is a practical choice for high-traffic urban dog parks. It drains better and is easier to maintain than grass, providing a consistent surface for play.
Functionality Over Frills: The park prioritizes core functionalities – a secure, off-leash area with water and waste disposal – making it a practical and efficient option for daily dog walks and play.
As a public dog park managed by the City of Alexandria, Dog Run Park at Carlyle does not typically offer commercial promotions or loyalty programs. Its primary "promotion" is its role as a free, publicly accessible amenity for residents and their dogs. The value it provides comes from the ability to offer safe, off-leash exercise in an urban environment without a fee.
However, dog owners in Alexandria should be aware of larger, city-wide pet-related events or initiatives that the City of Alexandria's Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities might organize or promote. For instance, the "ALX Dog Walk" is a notable annual event in Old Town Alexandria that celebrates community, sustainability, and features dog-friendly activities, often including promotions for participants (like goodie bags or discounts for military/students). While not directly tied to the Carlyle dog park, these events reflect the city's broader commitment to pet welfare and community engagement. For the most current information on park rules, any temporary closures, or city-wide pet events, local residents should consult the official City of Alexandria Parks & Recreation website or contact their department directly.

Its value to locals stems from its highly convenient location within the Carlyle neighborhood, providing an easily accessible spot for daily dog exercise without requiring a long drive. In a city where open green spaces for off-leash play can be scarce, this park fills a crucial need, offering a safe and enclosed environment where dogs can truly be dogs.

The provision of essential amenities like water for dogs and waste receptacles, coupled with its double-gated entry system, demonstrates a commitment to responsible pet ownership and safety. The park's proximity to public transport lines, while sometimes noisy, further enhances its accessibility for a wide range of city residents. Jun 06, 2025 · Beth NolleyThis is a small tiny dog park in Alexandria, very nice, but you should be warned to bring your doggie bags, does have water for the pups which is nice. One thing you should note, if your dog is nervous about loud noises, both the Metro and the Amtrak/ Mark/ other rail lines go right by this park. Sometimes with horns blowing and fairly loud noises. Our dog was fine that I would imagine some dogs might get a little nervous. There's good parking but not a lot.
May 28, 2025 · Chet RhodesLove this place! Everyone is friendly and makes sure their dogs play nicely. It's always clean and there's a place for doggie parents to walk a few laps while the dogs play. I've been going here for a few years now!
Sep 23, 2024 · Freedom Joy NealGreat dog park. One side is closed off for smaller dogs and the bigger side is where bigger dogs can play. A decent area for the dogs to play given that it is in the middle of the city. Wish there was more grass but there constantly being dogs there keeps the grass at bay. Don't go after it rains or your dog will need a bath once they get home.
May 18, 2019 · ClayWent on a weekday morning while dog sitting my daughter’s energetic girl dog. Only one other dog there which was just perfect. She got a chance to run around without the lease with the other dog who was smaller and very docile and playful like her.
