Great friendly service. Got some great fish and shrimp. They had patience with my very excited and overly helpful grand children. I appreciated the information and advice given to me and the fish and shrimp I brought. I gave them 4 stars because the store was disheveled.

Tank Dreams Introduce
For local users in Howell, Michigan, searching within the "Pet Store Near Me" category for a specialized aquarium store, Tank Dreams, located at 116 N Michigan Ave, Howell, MI 48843, has garnered a range of feedback in recent customer reviews. While one past experience highlights friendly service and helpful advice, more recent reviews paint a concerning picture regarding the store's current environment, animal welfare, and pricing consistency. This introduction aims to provide an objective overview based on the available customer testimonials, acknowledging both positive past interactions and significant present issues.
One customer recounted a positive experience, praising the "great friendly service" received while purchasing fish and shrimp. They specifically appreciated the patience shown by the staff towards their grandchildren and valued the "information and advice given." This suggests that, at least in the past, Tank Dreams was known for its knowledgeable staff and customer-centric approach, particularly for those interested in aquarium keeping. However, this positive review also noted a significant drawback, stating that "the store was disheveled," indicating potential issues with organization and overall cleanliness even at that time.
In stark contrast, more recent feedback paints a troubling picture of the store's current state. One reviewer, who had a positive experience a year prior, expressed significant disappointment, stating that the store is "NOT what it was a year ago." This review details concerning conditions within the aquariums, describing them as "dirty, sad, algae growing." Furthermore, the reviewer observed that the fish appeared stressed and had lost their color, making identification difficult. Most alarmingly, they reported seeing "half-dead fish in tanks that clearly have fin & tail rot, left to die," along with numerous dead snails. These observations raise serious concerns about the current standards of animal care and the overall maintenance of the store's aquatic environment.
Another recent customer reported a significant discrepancy between the online advertised price and the in-store price for yellow shrimp. While the website listed the shrimp at $2.99 each, the in-store price was quoted as $5.99 each. This discrepancy led to the customer declining the purchase, highlighting a potential issue with pricing accuracy and transparency between the online platform and the physical store. Such inconsistencies can lead to customer dissatisfaction and erode trust in the business.
Adding to the concerns about the store's current state, another reviewer expressed worry for the owner, noting that the shop's current condition is drastically different from its past state when the owner was "always so kind & knowledgeable." This suggests a potential change in management, staffing, or overall operational standards. The reviewer further speculated that if the owner is no longer able to dedicate the same time and care to the shop, its operations should be temporarily suspended to prevent the mistreatment of living creatures. This comment underscores the severity of the animal welfare concerns raised in the other recent review.
Based on the overwhelmingly negative descriptions of the current environment and animal welfare, it is difficult to ascertain the current services and features of Tank Dreams. While it likely still offers a selection of fish, shrimp, and potentially other aquatic life, the reported poor conditions of the tanks and the apparent neglect of the animals raise serious ethical questions for potential customers. The past positive mention of knowledgeable staff may no longer be reflective of the current situation, especially if there has been a change in personnel or management. The discrepancy in pricing between online and in-store further complicates any assessment of the store's features, as it suggests potential inconsistencies in business practices.
Given the serious concerns raised about animal welfare and the significant decline in the store's condition reported in recent reviews, it is highly unlikely that Tank Dreams is currently running any active or trustworthy promotional offers. Any past positive aspects of the store, such as friendly service or knowledgeable advice, appear to have been overshadowed by the current issues. Potential local users searching for a reputable "Pet Store Near Me" specializing in aquatic life should exercise extreme caution and consider visiting the store in person to assess the current conditions before making any purchases.
In conclusion, while Tank Dreams in Howell, MI, may have had positive aspects in the past, recent customer reviews paint a concerning picture of a pet store currently facing significant challenges. Reports of dirty and poorly maintained aquariums, sick and dying fish, and discrepancies between online and in-store pricing are serious red flags for any potential customer, particularly those concerned about animal welfare. Local users searching for aquarium supplies and aquatic life in the Howell area should be aware of these recent experiences and consider them carefully before choosing to patronize Tank Dreams. Further investigation or significant improvements in the store's conditions would be necessary to restore customer confidence.

Apr 02, 2025 · Christine TrojanI’m not sure what happened here but this place is NOT what it was a year ago when I bought fish there. All aquariums are now dirty, sad, algae growing. The fish barely have any color because they are so stressed out….i couldn’t even tell what some of them were. There are half-dead fish in tanks that clearly have fin & tail rot, left to die. Tons of dead snails at the bottoms on the tanks.. I went in a couple weekends ago to buy some yellow shrimp. The price on Tank Dreams’ website was $2.99/ea. The man who helped me (not Darren the owner) scooped out 4 shrimp for me and bagged them. He totaled the price and asked me for $25 and some change. I said “Huh? I thought they were $2.99 a piece?” He said, “No, they’re $5.99 each.” I said “On your website it shows $2.99 each.” He said, “Yeah, that shows different pricing. They’re $5.99 each here.” I handed the bag back to him and said, “Thanks anyway, I don’t want them for that price. They’re advertised differently.” I really hope everything is OK with the owner. I can’t see that he willingly let the shop get so bad….he was always so kind & knowledgeable. I think that if he doesn’t have the same time or compassion that he once did, the shop should be temporarily suspended. No living thing should be treated like they are right now.
Mar 09, 2025 · Amanda YoungThe store in person might be good, but the online ordering is terrible. I ordered some fish and shrimp and emailed twice asking when they would ship so that I could make sure I was home (didn’t want them sitting outside longer than necessary) and didn’t get a response. Finally over 2 weeks later I got a response saying they would ship today. Well I already ordered from somewhere else and have them in my tank already. So I asked for a refund and at least they responded to me promptly at that point. I understand that weather can be a factor but I expect some kind of response when I ask.
Feb 24, 2025 · Heather LangeWhat a lovely find! It didn't look like much from the outside, but my, he had some beautiful and unusual fishes. The owner, Darren, is just beginning his set up, but what he has is awesome already! He's knowledgeable and very helpful and advised us on what type of fish we should get for a running tank we have. Rainbows is what we got! Thanks Darren.
Feb 22, 2023 · Susan HoI decided to drive 1.5 hours out of Kalamazoo to Tank Dreams in Howell and upon arriving, I was impressed with the diversity and quality of fishes that Darren carried. His dedication and knowledge to the hobby is far greater than the majority of people I've met personally in the 15+ years I've kept aquariums. His business is still in its infancy and I wish the best for it as it expands. Thanks for getting me my lungfish! - Jonathan
