I usually buy my fish, supplies, etc from here. Today out of nowhere this employee doesn't sell me ghost shrimp. Why? Because apparently I need an ID and need to be 18 to buy shrimp, keep in mind I have purchased shrimp, fish, supplies, plants and more from this store before (I am 17). This employee, like shes enjoying wasting my time just says nope you need an ID or no fish with the biggest smirk. I guess rest of the workers are all criminals. So I left the rest of the stuff I was going to buy there and go to PetSmart. As expected they don't have a stupid requirement. I know most of the people in that store and they know I have proper tanks. Probably not gonna go in there again since I cant buy fish there.

Petco Introduce
For pet owners in Amherst, New Hampshire, and the surrounding communities, Petco, located at 123 Rte 101A # B, Amherst, NH 03031, USA, is a national chain aiming to be a comprehensive "Pet Store Near Me" for all their animal companions' needs. Typically, Petco stores offer a wide selection of pet supplies, live animals, grooming services, and often veterinary care or adoption opportunities.
While specific details about the Amherst Petco's environment are not provided in the customer reviews, Petco stores generally feature organized aisles with products for various pets like dogs, cats, fish, birds, and small animals. These locations often include dedicated areas for live animal displays, grooming salons, and potentially veterinary clinics or adoption centers operated by partner organizations.
The limited customer feedback available for the Amherst Petco presents a mixed picture, with both negative and potentially neutral experiences highlighted. One customer expressed significant frustration regarding a seemingly inconsistent policy on the sale of ghost shrimp. This 17-year-old customer, who claims to have previously purchased shrimp, fish, and other supplies from the same store, was denied the purchase of ghost shrimp by an employee who stated that an ID and being 18 years of age were required. The customer found this policy unusual, especially given their prior purchase history and the lack of such a requirement at a competitor store. This incident led to the customer abandoning their intended purchase and expressing their intent not to return, citing the perceived illogical and time-wasting nature of the policy.
Another customer shared a highly negative experience with the grooming services at the Amherst Petco. This customer brought their Bernese Mountain Dog for a grooming appointment, seeking a comprehensive service. However, the groomer, Andrea, allegedly stated that the dog was covered in severe mats and that the owner needed to seek mat removal elsewhere, possibly even requiring a medical procedure and a full shave. The owner, who had recently taken the dog to the vet with no mention of matting and regularly brushes their dog at home, was distressed by this assessment. Subsequently, the owner sought second opinions from their veterinarian and another groomer at MOJO DOG MANOR, both of whom reportedly found no mats and only recommended a deshedding treatment. The customer expressed strong dissatisfaction with the Petco groomer's assessment, labeling it unprofessional and lacking in knowledge, and vowed never to patronize the company again.
Considering these two recent negative reviews, it is crucial for local users to be aware of these experiences. The first review raises concerns about potentially inconsistent or poorly communicated policies regarding the sale of certain live animals, particularly to younger customers with a history of responsible pet ownership. The second review highlights a significant issue with the accuracy and professionalism of the grooming services provided at this specific Petco location, potentially causing unnecessary distress and misdiagnosis.
Despite these negative experiences, Petco as a national chain typically offers a wide range of services, which may or may not have been fully experienced or mentioned by these reviewers at the Amherst location. These standard services often include:
- Pet Supplies: A broad selection of food, treats, toys, bedding, grooming tools, and health products for various types of pets.
- Live Animals: The sale of fish, small animals (hamsters, guinea pigs, etc.), birds, and reptiles. The availability can vary based on location and time.
- Grooming Services: Professional grooming for dogs and cats, including bathing, haircuts, nail trims, and other services. However, the negative review suggests potential inconsistencies in the quality and accuracy of these services at the Amherst location.
- Veterinary Services: Many Petco stores host in-store veterinary clinics, often operated by third-party providers, offering routine care, vaccinations, and minor medical services. It would be advisable to confirm if the Amherst location has a vet clinic and understand its services.
- Pet Adoption Events: Petco frequently partners with local shelters to facilitate pet adoptions. Check with the Amherst store for information on upcoming events.
- Training Classes: Some Petco locations offer dog training programs. Inquire with the Amherst store about the availability and types of classes offered.
- Aquarium Supplies and Fish: As mentioned in the first review, the store does sell fish and related supplies, although the purchasing experience can be inconsistent.
Given the recent negative feedback regarding specific services, it is particularly important for local users considering purchasing live animals or using the grooming services at the Amherst Petco to proceed with caution and potentially seek additional information or consider alternative providers. It may be beneficial to inquire directly about the store's policies on live animal sales, especially for younger customers, and to seek detailed information about the groomers' experience and qualifications before booking an appointment.
Promotional information for Petco is typically available through their national website, mobile app, and in-store flyers. These often include discounts on specific brands of food, treats, and supplies, as well as potential promotions on grooming services or adoption events. Local users should check these resources or contact the Amherst store directly at (603) 577-4583 to inquire about any current promotions.
In conclusion, Petco in Amherst, NH, is a "Pet Store Near Me" that offers a range of pet supplies and services. However, recent customer reviews highlight potential issues with inconsistent policies regarding live animal sales to younger customers and a concerning experience with the grooming services. While Petco as a whole aims to be a comprehensive pet care destination, these specific incidents at the Amherst location suggest that local users should exercise caution and perhaps seek further clarification on policies and service quality before making purchases or appointments.

Feb 13, 2025 · Huseyin AkifWe use to come here for dog food treats and toys and I plan on never giving a cent to this company due to an experience I had with a groomer. I brought my Bernese mountain dog in for grooming. We usually groom at home but I wanted him to have the works done. The groomer, Andrea came out looked him over and told me how he was covered in mats head to toe, and that I need to go somewhere else to get them removed and it was so bad it might possibly have to be a medical procedure. The he would need to fully be shave. I expressed he had just gone to the vet a few weeks prior and the vet did not mention this, and we do brush him at home and I occasionally see small knots where his collar lays or the side he favors to sit on but we brush them out. She told me no he was covered and they could not groom him, due to the liability of the state his mats were in and that it was Petco Policy. This sent me out in tears feeling as though he was suffering and we did not do our jobs as dog parents. IMMEDIATELY scheduled an appointment with his vet and a grooming appointment with MOJO DOG MANOR in Milford. Both the vet and groomers said they could not find one mat on him and he just needed a deshedding treatment. These “professionals” did not educate and instead bashed me, and wrongfully so. Picture of my healthy happy boy for attention. I hope everyone knows how unprofessional and the lack knowledge these people have.
Aug 20, 2024 · Jessica PelczarWe usually frequent this location. I'm not sure if Pam no longer works there or what is going on but the aquarium section was awful. Dead fish in every tank, all the fish except salt water fish looked rough. They were barely moving, no rocks/sand, pieces of what looked like mesh/screen, as well as a lot of algae and build up on some of the tanks. There were a lot if tags with names and prices but no fish to match. It was really sad to see how down hill it had gotten in the past couple months
Nov 23, 2024 · Jessica MagnusonI used to go to the Petco in Manchester, but have since moved. They used to do these fish adoptions where they would let sick fish go for free or very cheap, but overall their bettas and fish were quite healthy. I like to rehab living creatures as its nice to see them bounce back. So I went to my new to me local Petco in Amherst. About 1/4 of their fish were dead in cups, half were stick thin and starving. I didn't notice an adoption area like at the other store, but I pulled an especially bad looking one from the shelf and went to the register to see if they'd work with me. I guess it depends on who runs the store, because they claimed the rotting, emaciated grey lump of a betta fish was perfectly happy and put it back on the shelf and wouldn't budge on price. 2 days later I go in for dog food and that fish is sitting dead on the shelf. Just seems weird to refuse a sale to let the "product" expire. I guess I was just thrown for a loop when chain stores can have their own personal policies depending on whose in charge.
Nov 12, 2024 · D SmithI like that petco has a large variety of foods, ect…also I think the VETCO options are GREAT and very convenient ! The only cons I have about petco is that I feel that a lot of the prices for other items like pet beds , cat trees, ect, ect, I mean most non food items are way over-priced . The biggest con I have is your auto delivery for pet medications and telephone cust service for that as well .. I have tried numerous times to stop the medication auto delivery and they finally stopped the delivery but kept charging our credit card over and over ! Due to that reason auto-delivery will never be my choice w/ petco again . All in all it’s a good store
