I’m honestly so annoyed by Petco so here is a list, both general observations and specific ones about this store in particular. 1. The reptiles: I bought my one year old ball python from this store. She was extremely dehydrated, was having a horrible shed (bleeding, patchy shedding, stuck eye caps). For those who don’t know, ball pythons require high humidity because unlike mammals, they get their hydration from the humidity of the air and less so from sipping water. My snake was in a tiny enclosure, with humidity lower than you would find in your house, with lighting that has been proven to irritate and stress snakes, and temperatures that were too low to maintain her health. She was sickly in there, so I bought her and gave her the set up she deserved. What infuriates me is that Petco, and this store because I and my friends have complained, is aware these are not livable conditions, and does nothing. The employees at this store are aware of the low humidity but don’t change it. It makes me very upset that anyone could look at these reptiles in these spaces and not try and help. I’m sure there is at least one employee in there that tries, but I come in very often to visit the animals in there, and every time I’m disappointed and disturbed by the conditions. 2. Petco Vital care program: This I think is the second worst part about Petco as a whole. When I bought aforementioned snake, they asked for my phone number, email address, etc. I assumed this is for protecting themselves should the snake be sick (she was) or die prematurely. I gave my information, checked out, and went home. It was only later I found out I’d been signed up for the Vital care program, which is basically “pay 10 dollars a month for a YEAR, get 5$ in rewards that are extremely inconvenient to load before you buy things, but we still get 60$ a year at least (and that’s if you use the 5$ rewards every month)”. I was not informed of this, and when I called the customer service line to cancel it, they told me it was a one year contract, and I couldn’t cancel it. 120$ for a year of minuscule discounts without my consent or knowledge of it is extremely appalling to me. 3. The products/prices: I think the only thing I have ever bought from Petco and kept long term is my snake. I’ve returned everything else I’ve ever bought. When I got my snake I bought a snake starter enclosure that leaked and wasn’t suitable for snakes. I bought a cat tree for my cat that was 150$: it’s three tiered (2’5”) and ugly, but for my cat I’ll do anything. I ended up getting a 6 tiered (6 foot) cat tower online for 70$, and its beautiful, larger, more entertaining for the cat, and higher quality than the one I bought at Petco. The cat toys are cheap and overpriced, the litter boxes are 20$ for the bin and 20$ for the lid (target sells the lid and bin for 20$ total). It’s honestly scalping but hey, if they sign you up for vital care, you’ll save 5% on it. Yippie. The only good part about this store in particular is the single worker who actually cared for the animals. When I walked in she was playing with the ferrets, and was actually taking care of them. She cleaned the waste out, played with them, and was very sweet. I wish everyone cared for animals that way. Overall, I beg you, as future or current pet owner, as a consumer, please shop elsewhere. This store and Petco as a whole doesn’t care about their animals, and you can get higher quality items from other places for way cheaper. Please take the extra step to think of what is best for you and your pet. I added a photo of the front of this store currently. It says Petco Lies and fish. Sums it up pretty well

Petco Introduce

For pet owners in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, Petco located at 3380 124th Ave NW is a well-known option within the "Pet Store Near Me" category, offering a wide range of pet supplies and potentially live animals. However, recent customer reviews present a complex and somewhat contradictory picture of the store experience, particularly concerning animal welfare, the value of their membership program, and product quality. While one reviewer expresses significant disappointment and raises serious concerns about the care of reptiles, the mandatory enrollment in the Vital Care program, and overpriced, low-quality products, another customer offers high praise specifically for the fish selection and the knowledge of the fish department employees. This necessitates a detailed and objective introduction that incorporates both positive and negative feedback to provide a comprehensive overview for prospective local users.

The environment of the Petco in Coon Rapids, based on the provided reviews, elicits contrasting descriptions. One reviewer characterizes the reptile enclosures as "tiny" with inadequate humidity, improper lighting known to stress snakes, and temperatures too low for the animals' health. This paints a picture of potentially unsuitable living conditions for the reptiles. In stark contrast, the store appears to have at least one employee who demonstrates genuine care for the animals, observed interacting positively with the ferrets and maintaining their enclosure. This suggests that while systemic issues regarding animal care may exist, individual staff members might be dedicated to the well-being of the animals. The positive review focusing on fish does not describe the overall store environment but implies a well-maintained fish section with healthy animals.

The services offered at the Petco in Coon Rapids are likely to be typical of a large pet retail chain. These generally include the sale of live animals (such as fish, reptiles, small mammals, and birds), a wide variety of pet food and supplies for different species, grooming services, and potentially veterinary services through in-store clinics (though this is not specifically mentioned in the reviews for this location). The negative review details the experience of purchasing a ball python, indicating that reptile sales are part of their offerings. The forced enrollment in the "Vital Care program" upon purchase is also a service aspect, albeit one heavily criticized by the reviewer. The positive review mentions the availability of dog treats and the customer's search for raw hide free options, indicating that the store stocks a range of products beyond just fish.

Several features of this Petco location are highlighted in the customer reviews, both positive and negative. A significant negative feature, according to one reviewer, is the allegedly inadequate care provided to the reptiles, characterized by unsuitable enclosures and neglect of their specific environmental needs. The "Petco Vital Care program" is also presented as a negative feature, described as a costly, year-long, mandatory enrollment with inconveniently redeemable rewards that was not disclosed to the customer at the time of sign-up. Furthermore, the reviewer criticizes the quality and pricing of various products, citing examples of a leaky snake enclosure, an overpriced and low-quality cat tree, and generally overpriced toys and litter boxes. In contrast, a major positive feature is the "wide" and varied selection of "always healthy" fish, along with knowledgeable employees in the fish department who provide helpful advice and demonstrate an understanding of aquatic life and tank compatibility. The presence of at least one caring employee who showed genuine attention to the ferrets is also a noteworthy positive feature, albeit seemingly an exception rather than the rule.

The customer reviews provide conflicting perspectives on the overall quality and ethical practices of this Petco store. The serious allegations of neglect towards reptiles and the deceptive enrollment in the Vital Care program raise significant concerns about the store's commitment to animal welfare and customer transparency. The comparison of product quality and pricing with other retailers further paints a negative picture of the store's value proposition in those areas. However, the positive feedback regarding the fish department, highlighting healthy animals, a good selection, and knowledgeable staff, suggests that there may be specific areas within the store where quality and service are commendable. The single instance of an employee showing genuine care for the ferrets offers a glimmer of hope but also underscores the potential for inconsistency in animal care standards within the store.

The provided reviews do not contain any specific details about current promotional offers or loyalty programs at the Petco in Coon Rapids, beyond the heavily criticized Vital Care program. Large retail chains like Petco often have ongoing promotions, seasonal sales, and loyalty programs that offer discounts or rewards to frequent shoppers. However, the negative review actively discourages readers from shopping at Petco altogether, suggesting that any potential savings might not outweigh the concerns about animal welfare and product value. The positive review focusing on fish does not mention any specific promotions but implies that the quality and selection are worth the price, even compared to other pet stores.

In conclusion, the Petco located at 3380 124th Ave NW in Coon Rapids presents a mixed experience for pet owners. While one customer reports severely concerning conditions for the reptiles, deceptive membership enrollment, and overpriced, low-quality products, another praises the wide selection and healthy condition of the fish, along with the knowledgeable staff in that department. The overall environment and services appear to be typical of a large pet retail chain, but the quality of animal care and the value of products seem to be areas of significant contention. Local pet owners considering this Petco should weigh the serious allegations regarding reptile welfare and the negative experience with the Vital Care program against the positive feedback about the fish department. It may be prudent for prospective customers to visit the store and assess the conditions and product quality for themselves, particularly if they are interested in purchasing reptiles or enrolling in any membership programs.

My review is based on fish and fish alone. I will not buy my fish at any other store. I pass at least 4 other pet supply stores on my way here. The fish selection is wide, with a lot of variety and colors. The fish are always healthy, and I have never had any loss. The employees are knowledgeable and will make small talk about what you have already. The last two times I almost bought a couple fish that would not have done well in my tank with new friends. There is nothing better than an employee who knows about the animals. I did look at dog treats while I was there last. I've been hunting for raw hide free bones. I was unable to find any. That would be a fantastic addition.

I took a dog I was fostering in for a groom and to have her nails cut. The haircut looks great however, I am disappointed that only 1/2 of her nails got trimmed and the remaining appeared to be forgotten about. I was never told that they had a problem with her or that they were not able to cut her nails.

I’m a guinea pig mom of 8 who purchased two guinea pigs from this location. On the day of the purchase, the one was making weird breathing noises as we were driving home in the car with her. We immediately went back and brought it to their attention. We were told they couldn’t hear anything, and that it was probably just anxiety, which we thought so as well. More stuff happened where I noticed she needed vet care - I will spare the details. Knowing their policy I brought her in as soon as possible, and I explained to the employee at the front of the store what has been going on. The employee even agreed that she believed it was from anxiety, but as soon as I was done talking, she threw her stuff, said “I don’t know why you didn’t bring her in sooner” in an aggressive tone, and stormed off to get her manager. The manager came back and was short with me and just treated it like a regular return. I had to ASK if I’d be informed about her progress, and he just says “call in two days”. The blatant disrespect and disregard for my feelings was ridiculous. Placing the blame on me when I was told after purchase that “she should be fine” is even worse. You’re in customer service for a BIG company, learn to manage your emotions and how to come from a place of empathy. If you truly cared about these animals, this wouldn’t have happened in the first place.

This is potentially the worst pet store location that I’ve been to in the Twin Cities. I saw many dead fish, they’re attempting to sell dead plants and I didn’t see any staff in the store. It is filthy, understaffed, the fish look sick and there is dust/spiderwebs all over the store. I would highly recommend avoiding this location, especially with solid alternatives including PetSmart and PetSupplies Plus nearby.
