Welcome to Malawi Aquatics
For aquatic enthusiasts and those looking to embark on the journey of fish keeping in Florissant, MO, Malawi Aquatics emerges as a prominent destination in the "Pet Store Near Me" category. Located at 11619 W Florissant Ave, Florissant, MO 63033, USA, this specialized establishment is renowned for its extensive selection of fish and its dedicated approach to customer service. Since its establishment in 1998, Malawi Aquatics has cultivated a reputation as a go-to spot for both common and rare aquatic specimens, catering to a wide range of aquarium needs.
One of the most striking features of Malawi Aquatics is its truly massive selection of fish. Customers consistently highlight the sheer volume and variety available, noting that "they have over 50 tanks with fish so you'll find what you want." This extensive inventory means that whether you're searching for a particular species for a community tank, specific cichlids, or unique aquatic life, the chances of finding it at Malawi Aquatics are significantly high. This vast array sets it apart from more general pet stores, positioning it as a specialist retailer dedicated to the diverse world of fish. The sheer quantity and variety of fish make Browse a captivating experience, and it's clear they aim to be a comprehensive resource for any fish enthusiast.
Beyond the impressive stock, the customer service and expertise at Malawi Aquatics are highly praised. Customers describe the people as "very friendly and happy to answer any questions you might have." This welcoming atmosphere, combined with the staff's readiness to provide guidance, is invaluable, especially for those new to fish keeping or facing specific challenges. In an interview, the owner, Bill Tyler, emphasized that what keeps them going is their "specialty fishes and giving customers knowledge on how to take care of their fishes and aquariums." He also noted that other stores like Walmart, Pet Smart, and Petco often refer customers to them due to their superior variety and knowledge. This direct testimony underscores their role as an authority in the local aquatic community, offering insights that go beyond basic product information. This commitment to customer education ensures that patrons feel supported and confident in their fish-keeping endeavors.
The environment at Malawi Aquatics, while not explicitly detailed in terms of aesthetics, can be inferred from the nature of its business. Housing "over 50 tanks" implies a significant retail space dedicated to showcasing healthy aquatic life. A store with such a large number of tanks would necessitate a clean and well-maintained environment to ensure the health of the fish and the comfort of the customers. The focus on fish means the ambient conditions are optimized for aquatic life, providing a proper setting for visitors to observe and select their next finned companions. While one customer mentioned a "nice store," the primary emphasis in reviews is on the quality and quantity of the fish rather than elaborate d茅cor, suggesting a practical, functional space designed for serious aquarists.
Regarding services and goods for sale, Malawi Aquatics' specialization is clear: fish and aquarium needs. Their stock ranges from everyday community fish like "silver dollar fish and tetris fish" to "South American cichlids to African cichlids," highlighting a particular strength in the cichlid family, which often appeals to more dedicated hobbyists. Beyond live fish, they are a primary source for "aquarium needs," which would logically include essential supplies such as tanks, filters, heaters, lighting, substrates, water conditioners, and various fish foods. The store's longevity since 1998, and the owner's comments about doing "installs in people's houses" and businesses, indicate that they likely offer comprehensive aquarium maintenance and setup services, catering to both residential and commercial clients. This holistic approach ensures that customers can not only purchase fish but also receive support for the entire lifecycle of their aquarium setup.
However, it is important for potential customers to be aware of the pricing structure at Malawi Aquatics, as it has been a point of feedback. One customer noted a significant "mark up" compared to larger chain stores, citing a Bala shark costing "$24 vs $7 from PetSmart" and an aquatic plant at "$15" compared to "$9 from Petco" that "barely lasted 2 weeks." While acknowledging that a non-chain store needs to make a profit, this customer found the prices "a bit much" and expressed hesitation to buy from here again for common selections, suggesting they would "only shop here for rare selections if I decide to come back." This indicates that while the selection is vast and the knowledge is deep, the price point for some common items might be higher than that of mass retailers. This trade-off between specialized selection/expertise and competitive pricing is a common characteristic of independent, specialized businesses.
In terms of promotional information, the most compelling advertisements for Malawi Aquatics come from the strong recommendations of its satisfied customers who "highly recommend this place for aquarium needs" and emphasize the exceptional customer service. The owner's willingness to send customers to them from bigger chain stores also acts as a powerful endorsement of their specialized niche. While specific sales or discount events are not detailed, the reputation for having an unmatched selection and expert advice is the primary draw. The store's phone number, (314) 830-6460 or +1 314-830-6460, provides direct access for inquiries regarding specific fish availability, pricing, or services. Their history as the "first Black-Owned Aquatic Store in St. Louis" also adds a unique and significant dimension to their community presence.
In conclusion, Malawi Aquatics at 11619 W Florissant Ave, Florissant, MO 63033, USA, is a highly recommended "Pet Store Near Me" for anyone in the St. Louis area focused on fish and aquariums. Its unparalleled selection of over 50 tanks of fish, coupled with the profound knowledge and friendly demeanor of its staff, makes it an essential resource for both new and experienced aquarists. While prices for some common items may be higher than those at large chain stores, the value lies in the specialized, healthy stock, expert advice, and personalized service that are characteristic of this long-standing and dedicated establishment.

Mar 20, 2025 路 cm4tr1xNice store but the mark up is ridiculous. I understand it not being a chain store so they have to be able to make a profit, but the prices are a bit much. A Bala shark here costs like $24 vs $7 from PetSmart. That's extreme! They have other selections of fish that are nice but I'm actually hesitant to buy from here again considering the fact that I could find the same fish for a fraction elsewhere. I bought an aquatic plant here for $15 and it barely lasted 2 weeks. Bought the same plant from Petco and it only cost me $9. Nice customer service though. I'd only shop here for rare selections if I decide to come back.
Dec 26, 2024 路 Jessie Rene' (J.Rene')This store is GREAT! So impressive to walk in to. Just like stores back in the day before the chain megastores pushed out all the high quality, owner run shops. Stop buying fish at PetsMart. Is it a little more money? Yes, but this is a very high quality store and worth every single penny. Always a treat to visit. Will never go anywhere else again.
