Visited here for the first time on the 16th. The selection of tanks was exactly what I had been searching for and had failed to find at the other local exotic pet shops (I was looking for a nonstandard tank size so it could fit on a specific table of mine). The animals were gorgeous! They looked healthy and their terrariums were clean + very thoroughly decorated. The guy working there (The fella who is deaf in one ear) was friendly and easy to talk with. I have some social anxiety, so the good vibes were much appreciated. He was also super generous! Gave me the calcium I was going to purchase for free on top of giving me a few bucks off of another item I was buying. Phenomenal selection of feeders for extremely reasonable prices, as well. This is going to be my go to reptile supply shop. I have recommended it to friends & I recommend it to whoever is reading this review. Attached are some pics that I took of some of the reptiles available for purchase.

Great Lakes Reptiles Introduce
Welcome to Great Lakes Reptiles, a pet store located at 25205 Gratiot Ave # A, Roseville, MI 48066, USA, specializing in reptiles and reptile-related supplies. As a "Pet Store Near Me" for reptile enthusiasts in the Roseville area, Great Lakes Reptiles offers a selection of live reptiles, enclosures, feeders, and other necessary items for reptile care. Customer reviews provide mixed perspectives on the store's offerings and services, which potential customers should consider.
One customer shared a positive first-time experience, highlighting the store's selection of tanks, which met specific nonstandard size requirements that were difficult to find elsewhere. This suggests that Great Lakes Reptiles may offer a more diverse range of enclosure options compared to other local exotic pet shops. The same reviewer also praised the appearance and health of the animals, noting that they looked "gorgeous" and were housed in clean and thoroughly decorated terrariums. This positive initial impression extends to the staff, with a mention of a friendly and helpful employee who provided good vibes and even offered complimentary items and a discount. Furthermore, the store was commended for its "phenomenal selection of feeders" at "extremely reasonable prices," leading this customer to recommend Great Lakes Reptiles as their go-to reptile supply shop.
However, another customer reported a significantly negative experience involving the purchase of a baby ball python that appeared weak upon leaving the store and unfortunately died the following day. This customer expressed extreme dissatisfaction with the store's handling of the situation upon returning with the deceased animal. Allegations were made regarding a rude and defensive response from a staff member who reportedly blamed the customer and attributed negative online reviews to a personal issue. The customer also raised concerns about the lack of direct contact with the breeder and the suspicion surrounding this arrangement. The provided care instructions given by the store were followed, yet the snake's condition rapidly deteriorated, with the customer describing the animal as "writhing in pain" before its death. A subsequent update from this customer indicated that the baby python had a respiratory infection, leading to the conclusion that the establishment "clearly does not care about their animals and it’s disgusting" and is primarily focused on profit.
Considering these contrasting reviews, the environment of Great Lakes Reptiles appears to have aspects that are both commendable and concerning. The positive review highlights clean and well-decorated terrariums, suggesting attention to the living conditions of the displayed animals at least in some instances. The availability of a diverse selection of tanks also indicates a focus on providing appropriate housing options. However, the negative review raises serious questions about the overall health of the animals being sold and the potential for underlying health issues, such as the reported respiratory infection. The cleanliness observed by one customer may not be consistently maintained across all animals or may not be sufficient to prevent the spread of illness.
The services offered by Great Lakes Reptiles, based on the available information, likely include:
- Sale of Live Reptiles: The store offers a variety of reptiles for purchase, including baby ball pythons and potentially other species. However, the health and condition of these animals may vary, as indicated by the conflicting customer experiences.
- Reptile Enclosures (Tanks): The store appears to have a notable selection of tanks, including nonstandard sizes that may be difficult to find elsewhere. This suggests a focus on providing suitable housing for various reptile species.
- Feeders: A "phenomenal selection of feeders" at reasonable prices was mentioned, indicating that the store supplies food for reptiles. The variety and quality of these feeders seem to be a positive aspect of their offerings.
- Reptile Supplies: While not explicitly detailed, it can be inferred that the store sells other necessary reptile supplies such as substrates, heating and lighting equipment, and decorations, given that it is described as a "go to reptile supply shop" by one customer.
- Customer Service: Customer service experiences appear to be inconsistent. One customer reported a friendly, helpful, and generous interaction, while another described a rude and defensive response when addressing a serious issue with a purchased animal. This suggests that the quality of customer service may depend on the specific staff member and the nature of the interaction.
- Expert Advice: The positive reviewer mentioned a helpful interaction with a staff member, implying that some level of advice and guidance is available. However, the negative experience raises concerns about the accuracy and helpfulness of the advice provided, particularly regarding the care of sick animals.
The features of Great Lakes Reptiles include its specialization in reptiles, a potentially diverse selection of tanks, and a good selection of feeders at reasonable prices. The knowledge and helpfulness of the staff appear to be variable. A concerning feature is the alleged sale of a sick animal and the subsequent handling of the customer's complaint, which raises red flags about the store's commitment to animal welfare and customer satisfaction.
Promotional information is limited to the complimentary calcium and a discount mentioned in the positive review. It is unclear if these were part of a broader promotional strategy or isolated instances of generosity from one employee. No other information regarding ongoing promotions or discounts is available in the provided reviews.
In conclusion, Great Lakes Reptiles in Roseville, MI, offers a specialized selection of reptiles and reptile supplies, including a notable variety of tanks and reasonably priced feeders. However, potential customers should be aware of the conflicting customer experiences. While one reviewer praised the healthy animals, clean enclosures, helpful staff, and good prices, another reported purchasing a sick animal that died shortly after, along with a negative and unhelpful interaction with staff when seeking resolution. The discrepancy in these reviews suggests potential inconsistencies in animal health and customer service. Local users considering Great Lakes Reptiles should weigh these contrasting experiences and may want to personally assess the animals and facilities before making a purchase. Contacting the store at (586) 773-1807 or +1 586-773-1807 or visiting their location at 25205 Gratiot Ave # A, Roseville, MI 48066, USA, may provide further insight into their current practices and the health of their animals.

Jul 29, 2024 · Morgan GDO NOT BUY YOUR REPTILES FROM HERE! I am seriously pissed off sitting here writing this. The brown haired woman at Great Lakes Reptiles sold me a sick baby ball python yesterday. When we left, she seemed a little weak so we were cautious. We got her home and took care of her. I was so excited to have my first snake. I named her Cleo. Today she died. When we woke up this morning, she was not moving her neck and this concerned us. We brought her back to the store and the woman immediately put the blame on us, giving us a rude response and an overall very defensive demeanor. Then when we brought up the bad reviews about their store, she blamed it on her ex boyfriend, claiming it was him trying to get back at her. When we asked to be in contact with the breeder, she informed us that the breeder doesn’t like to be in contact the public, which I found suspicious. Regardless, She told us to keep the snake in heat, which we have been, so we took her home and monitored her. Not even an hour ago the snake was moving around with her mouth wide open. It looked like she was writhing in pain, I didn’t know what to do. just watched a snake I had for a day and spent over $300 on die. Seriously so sickening and sad. Please do not buy from here. I’m heartbroken. She was just a baby. :( Update: my baby had a respiratory infection. This establishment clearly does not care about their animals and it’s disgusting. They only care about money.
Jan 26, 2024 · Danielle DemersVery cool store! Large variety of reptiles and snakes etc. The workers are pretty awesome and full of information. I especially loved the big turtle named Bubbles that walks around the store.
Mar 12, 2025 · Leesa LaneHonestly, I’m happy that I got my tortoise, but the staff doesn’t know anything about the animals every time I ask a question I’m always told they don’t know. Apparently the conditions he was in has caused him to have a upper respiratory infection that is irritating I I was told to keep his tank at 95° with 10% humidity but when I took him to the vet, they said no his temperature needs to be a little higher and the humidity should be at 60% during the day and 70 to 80% at night They didn’t tell me I was supposed to put calcium on his food. They didn’t tell me anything about my tortoise other than he needs to eat leafy greens DO BETTER!!!
Jan 31, 2025 · shayla harringtonI had high hopes for Great Lakes Reptile under new management, but unfortunately, I’ve been left deeply disappointed. We purchased two snakes from Christine, who sold them as a “bonded pair” and gave us a discount under the condition we keep them together. As new snake owners, we trusted her advice and spent hundreds of dollars on a large, high-quality enclosure to provide the best life for these snakes. Within three days, the snakes began exhibiting twitching movements, which turned out to be stress and confusion caused by attempts to mate. Upon researching and seeking guidance, I discovered there’s no such thing as “bonded” snakes. When I called the shop to address this, a young lady not Christine answered and admitted the information was incorrect but directed me to the manager, Nate. When I visited the store in person, Nate tried to help but also made excuses about his hard day and a flat tire, which felt dismissive of the seriousness of the situation. After speaking with the owner, I was told nothing could be done except offering a discount on a pre-discounted tank—no flexibility, no payment plan, and no accountability for the misinformation we were given. The store admitted their mistake, but the lack of care and willingness to resolve the issue was incredibly hurtful. As a reptile lover, I want nothing but the best for these animals, and had we been given the correct information, we would have purchased separate enclosures from the start. Instead, we’ve been left scrambling to fix their mistake at our expense. The only reason this review isn’t one star is because Nate tried to educate me, but ultimately, this experience highlights poor training, misinformation, and a lack of compassion for customers and the reptiles they sell. If you choose to shop here, please double-check everything you’re told. To Great Lakes Reptile: your community deserves better. Please train your staff thoroughly and take responsibility for the well-being of the animals you sell. This version is factual, passionate, and professional while still advocating for better practices. Does this work for you?
