I’ve been going here for about 20 years. Always helpful and friendly. If you want to talk about dog food or about any animal as nauseam, this is your place! It’s always clean and the animals are clearly happy. Even Leroy has been there for 30 some odd years and to see a bird in pristine condition that hasn’t pulled its feathers tells you they take good care of their own.

Welcome to Gallery of Pets

For over four decades, Gallery of Pets has served as a fixture in the Austin, Texas pet community, establishing itself as a unique destination within the "Pet Store Near Me" category. Located at 11689 Research Blvd suite 107, Austin, TX 78759, USA, and reachable at (512) 345-8920, Gallery of Pets is known for its specialization in exotic animals, particularly birds and fish, while also catering to other pet needs. Its long history, having been in operation since 1977, speaks to its enduring presence and deep roots within the local pet scene.

The environment at Gallery of Pets is often described by long-time customers as consistently **clean and well-maintained**, creating a pleasant atmosphere for shoppers. A key aspect of their environment is the presence of the animals themselves. The store is noted for housing a variety of pets, with a particular emphasis on birds and fish, but also including rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, reptiles, and amphibians. Customer reviews highlight that the "animals are clearly happy," and reference long-term residents like "Leroy," a bird in "pristine condition" who has been with the store for decades, suggesting a high standard of animal care. This implies that the enclosures are well-kept, spacious, and appropriate for the species housed within. The layout likely allows for easy viewing of the animals, and the air quality is managed to minimize odors associated with a diverse range of pets. Beyond the animals, the store aims for an inviting space where customers can engage with staff and explore products. The overall ambiance is one of an established, dedicated pet store where the well-being of the animals is visibly prioritized, contributing to a comfortable and engaging shopping experience for pet enthusiasts.

Gallery of Pets offers a comprehensive range of services tailored to a diverse array of pets, particularly focusing on their specialties. The primary service is the **sale of various animals**, including exotic birds, a wide selection of fish, reptiles, small mammals (like rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters), and amphibians. This diverse offering sets them apart from many general pet supply stores. Complementing their animal sales, they provide an extensive selection of **pet products and supplies**. This includes specialized food, cages, aquariums, bedding, toys, and other accessories necessary for the proper care of the animals they sell. Customers looking for specific diets for their birds, or appropriate setups for reptiles or fish, would likely find a well-stocked inventory. A notable service offered is **boarding for birds, small mammals, and reptiles**. This provides a valuable option for pet owners needing temporary care for their exotic companions, a service not commonly found at all pet establishments. While not explicitly detailed, the staff's deep knowledge, with "over 100 years of combined experience in the pet industry," allows them to provide **expert advice and guidance** on animal care, nutrition, and behavior. This advisory role is a crucial service, especially for exotic pet owners who often require highly specific information to ensure their pets thrive. The store aims to be a resource where customers can "talk about dog food or about any animal as nauseam," indicating a willingness to engage in detailed discussions and provide in-depth information. Furthermore, services like toe nail trimming, as mentioned in one review, indicate that basic grooming or health-related services for various animals might also be offered, adding to the store's utility as a comprehensive pet care provider.

Several features distinguish Gallery of Pets as a unique establishment in the Austin pet market. The most prominent feature is its **long-standing history and extensive experience**, operating since 1977. This longevity suggests a deep understanding of the pet industry and a proven ability to adapt and serve the community over decades. The store's **specialization in birds and fish**, along with a strong offering of reptiles and small mammals, is another key feature. This focus allows them to offer a more curated selection of species and specialized products than general pet stores, appealing to enthusiasts of these particular animal types. The **knowledgeable and experienced staff** are a significant asset. With "over 100 years of combined experience," the employees, including long-term staff like Kathy Sunvison (who has been there since opening), are equipped to provide in-depth information and personalized advice, building customer trust and loyalty. The presence of **well-cared-for animals**, some of whom have resided at the store for many years, underscores their commitment to animal welfare and serves as a testament to their care standards. The availability of **boarding services for exotic pets** (birds, small mammals, reptiles) fills a crucial gap for owners of these animals who often struggle to find appropriate care when they travel. The ability to purchase live animals and simultaneously access a wide range of suitable products, along with expert advice, makes Gallery of Pets a **one-stop shop** for specific pet communities. While some customer experiences highlight issues with handling and accountability, the consistent positive feedback from long-term patrons regarding staff helpfulness, friendliness, and animal care suggests a strong foundation of positive customer relationships built over time.

  • Expert Consultations: While not a direct "sale," the availability of highly knowledgeable staff for in-depth discussions about pet care acts as a significant value proposition and draws customers seeking expert advice.
  • Seasonal or New Arrival Announcements: Especially for exotic animals and specific breeds of birds or fish, the store might announce new arrivals on social media or in-store, creating buzz among enthusiasts.

Will never return to the store for anything. We purchased a female eclectus parrot from them on consignment 3.months ago. For an entire month, we were visiting with the bird and bringing fruits and healthy snacks to give her because her bowls were full of nothing but a seed mix and no fruits or veggies for her to eat. After a month, we decided to take the bird after careful consideration. Moving forward, the bird has done amazing at home, isolated from my other 4 parrots of 2 different breeds. She travels with me, gets plenty of outside time, and her diet is a seasonal chop we make every 3 - 4 months with a variance of fruits added fresh every morning. We decided to bring her in on Sunday for a toe nail trimming along with my other 2 black head caiques. The caiques toe nails were trimmed in front of me with 0 issues. After about an hour or two, they brought my eclectus back to trim her nails. When they brought her back out to me the employee jess told me, after I asked her how it went, she said she didn't restrain my bird properly, so somone else had to come in and take her place. Not long after that, my bird was panting heavy and breathing really, really hard. I went to her, felt her body temp, and decided to spray some cool water on her to bring her temp down. She sat on my shoulder calmly like usual, and we left. On the way out, we had a short conversation with some people and then loaded up the birds and went home. When I got home, I put the caiques up for bed and spent some time with the eclectus since she was not acting well when we left. She seemed fine, so we put her to bed and covered her enclosure. Around 4 a.m., we were woken up by heavy tapping and an odd noise we had never heard before. I uncovered her and noticed she was chewing at her foot and flailing it around as well as tapping. We took her into the bathroom to get a better look and decided to shower and wash her feet. She stayed tapping and flailing her foot during the shower. After taking a shower, we took her downstairs and put her on her play perch to get another look. I'm still tapping some flailing of the foot. We decided to spray her down with water in case she had something on her plumage. Intended sent some videos to Tonya over social media showing her the tapping and telling her that if this is something that's going to need a vet visit I'm going to hold the shop liable because she's had 0 issues until inwas given my bird back and told she was mishandled, panting, and breathing very heavy and excessively hot to the touch. I relieved a response immediately telling me it was my issue to deal with and that I caused this because I sprayed her down with water and because I vape..... my house has an army of humidifier purifiers throughout that documents all airborne pollutants 24/7 most times my indoor air quality is better than outside, so this is nothing but a way to pass blame and avoid accountability for mishandling my bird and trying to not accept responsibility for what happened. Why would you have a new hire, with 0 experience, hold and restain a bird that's known to bite? Then tell me she was mishandled? So night 2, I'm woken up at 4 am again to tapping, and my bird acting dazed out... feet are hot to the touch and just tapping...... Diet is not an issue. Air quality is not an issue. This did not come about until after her nails were trimmed.... We are very disappointed in the lack of accountability and the shift in blame that's just downright false in every way!

We came here before closing yesterday, and the staff who helped us were absolutely the kindest and sweetest people we’ve met at a pet store before. My son lost his best friend a year ago and for his birthday we wanted to get him a new one, since it was close to closing, they held the sweetest budgie for us to pick up the next day. We came back in, were able to play with our new friend and learn a lot about the type of enclosure he should have and enrichment. My son is autistic and they were so patient and kind with him and my other children. I’m so thrilled to have found this place and look forward to coming back for our pet needs!! Baby blue is at home and loving it now!

Want a starved axolotl with no legs or gills that has been cannibalized by its siblings, has ammonia burns, bacterial infections and probably won’t even make it home? Look no further than Gallery of Pets. I have two of these poor creatures from this store that I’m rehabbing and they don’t even recognize actual food because they’re so used to just taking a bite out of one of their siblings since they were never fed anything but bloodworms which have no nutritional value to them. We have spent hundreds of dollars to save these guys along with the other people rehabbing their siblings. They are LESS THAN HALF the size the should be because they were never fed or housed properly. If you don’t know how to properly care for a type of animal DONT SELL THEM!!!!!
