I would be lost without the folks at Vet Cancer Group of Woodland Hills. They’re knowledgeable, patient, compassionate, and helpful. They make Royal feels so safe and loved. They make the experience as an owner as gentle and kind as possible. They’ve worked so well with my primary care vet to try and cut costs for me. Honestly it’s just a level of sincerity and care I thought was lost. The best people the best care. I love them.

Welcome to Veterinary Cancer Group SFV, A Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner

Unlike general "Pet Hospitals" that offer a broad range of services, this clinic operates as a referral center, providing advanced oncological expertise and therapies. This specialization means they are equipped with specific knowledge, technology, and a dedicated team focused solely on fighting cancer in companion animals. For inquiries or to discuss a referral, they can be reached at (818) 888-6882 or via mobile at +1 818-888-6882.

As a partner within the Thrive Pet Healthcare network, the Veterinary Cancer Group SFV benefits from being part of a larger veterinary collective, which can provide resources and a broader support system. However, their core identity remains rooted in their specialized focus on veterinary oncology. Their mission is to provide cutting-edge, compassionate, and personalized cancer treatment plans for pets, working closely with pet owners and their primary care veterinarians to achieve the best possible outcomes and maintain the highest quality of life for their patients.

Environment Designed for Compassion and Support

Given the challenging nature of a cancer diagnosis, the environment at Veterinary Cancer Group SFV is clearly designed to be one of profound compassion, understanding, and support. This is a critical aspect, as both pets and their owners are often experiencing significant emotional distress during this time. Customer reviews consistently highlight the following:

  • Compassionate and Empathetic Staff: The overwhelming feedback emphasizes that the staff are "knowledgeable, patient, compassionate, and helpful." This translates into an atmosphere where emotional support is a priority for both the pet and the human family. The staff's ability to make pets feel "safe and loved" during treatment, as described by a client for their pet "Royal," is paramount.
  • Gentle and Kind Approach: The clinic strives to make the experience for owners "as gentle and kind as possible." This indicates an awareness of the emotional toll that cancer treatment can take, leading to a considerate and supportive communication style and patient handling.
  • Understanding and Support during Difficult Times: When dealing with life-threatening illnesses, the environment needs to facilitate open discussion and emotional processing. The clinic fosters a space where "a level of sincerity and care I thought was lost" can be found, providing a sense of relief and trust for pet owners facing daunting decisions.

While specific architectural details are not provided, it can be inferred that the clinical space aims for a calm and clean atmosphere, conducive to sensitive consultations and treatment administration. The focus is clearly on creating a supportive human-animal bond throughout the complex journey of cancer treatment.

Specialized Oncological Services

As a veterinary cancer group, their services are highly specialized and advanced, focusing exclusively on oncology. These services would typically include:

  • Comprehensive Cancer Diagnosis and Staging: Utilizing advanced imaging (e.g., CT, MRI, ultrasound), biopsy, cytology, and laboratory testing to accurately diagnose the type and extent (stage) of cancer.
  • Medical Oncology (Chemotherapy): Administration of various chemotherapy protocols tailored to the specific type of cancer, the pet's overall health, and the owner's preferences and limitations. This involves careful monitoring for side effects.
  • Radiation Oncology: While not explicitly mentioned in the reviews, specialized cancer centers often offer radiation therapy for various tumors, either as a primary treatment or in combination with surgery or chemotherapy.
  • Surgical Oncology: Collaboration with veterinary surgeons (either in-house or through referral to a surgical specialist) for the removal of cancerous tumors.
  • Immunotherapy and Targeted Therapies: Utilizing newer, more specific treatments that harness the pet's immune system or target specific cancer pathways.
  • Pain Management: Comprehensive pain control strategies for cancer patients, addressing both acute and chronic pain associated with the disease or its treatment.
  • Palliative Care and Quality of Life Management: For cases where a cure is not possible, the focus shifts to maximizing the pet's comfort and quality of life through medication, nutritional support, and other supportive care measures.
  • Nutritional Counseling: Tailored dietary plans to support pets undergoing cancer treatment, which can often impact appetite and metabolism.
  • Consultations and Second Opinions: Offering expert advice and treatment recommendations for pets diagnosed with cancer, often in consultation with the referring primary care veterinarian.

The review mentioning Dr. Oakley working with the owner to create a treatment plan that "accounted for our limitations as caretakers (mainly that we have never had success pilling our cats)" highlights their personalized approach and willingness to adapt treatment strategies to the specific needs and capabilities of each family.

Distinguishing Features and Collaborative Approach

Several key features distinguish the Veterinary Cancer Group SFV, A Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner:

  • Exclusive Specialization in Oncology: This is their most significant distinguishing factor. By focusing solely on cancer, they develop deep expertise and access to the latest research and treatments in veterinary oncology.
  • Highly Knowledgeable and Experienced Team: The reviews consistently praise the team's knowledge, which is crucial in a complex field like cancer treatment. Dr. Oakley, specifically mentioned by a client, exemplifies this expertise.
  • Compassionate, Patient-Centric, and Client-Centered Care: The emphasis on making pets feel "safe and loved" and making the owner's experience "as gentle and kind as possible" demonstrates a strong commitment to emotional support alongside medical treatment. They understand the human-animal bond and the distress associated with a cancer diagnosis.
  • Collaborative Approach with Primary Care Veterinarians: A significant feature highlighted is their willingness to "work so well with my primary care vet to try and cut costs for me." This collaborative model is crucial in specialized veterinary medicine, ensuring seamless communication and continuity of care, and potentially optimizing costs for pet owners by leveraging the primary vet for certain aspects of care.
  • Focus on Quality of Life and Personalized Treatment Plans: The case of "Grey Davis (aka Dave)" illustrates their commitment to creating treatment plans that not only fight cancer but also account for practical limitations and aim to extend a good quality of life for as long as possible. The fact that Dave lived for "nearly 2 years after his diagnosis" despite previous rapid declines in other pets with the same condition is a testament to their effective and personalized approach.

It has taken far too long to post this review, but I'm finally getting around to saying how thankful I am for Dr. Oakley and the Veterinary Cancer Center. When our cat, Grey Davis (aka Dave) was diagnosed with stomach cancer (small cell lymphoma), we were filled with dread. We had already lost 2 kitties with the same diagnosis (Dave's mother and a litter mate), both of whom went downhill rather rapidly. Dr. Oakley worked with us to come up with a treatment plan that accounted for our limitations as caretakers (mainly that we have never had success pilling our cats). The vets and staff were always kind and compassionate and took the time to explain diagnoses, options for treatment, procedures, etc. When we moved away from L.A., one of the hardest parts was leaving VCG behind. Dave was already on the decline, and he passed away shortly after we moved.... But thanks to the excellent care he received, we got to be with him for nearly 2 years after his diagnosis, and for that, we are extremely grateful.

I can't thank this place enough. So far they have taken the best care of my baby during our chemo routine. They are thorough, kind, compassionate, nothing like the other places I went to. Our doctor is so easy to talk to and she answers all of my questions. The technicians are so so so kind and loving and understanding. Thank you from Bebe and I 🙏🏼♥
