Environment

The environment at Upstate Equine Medical Center is specifically designed to accommodate horses and the specialized equipment required for their care. As a dedicated equine facility, it is expected to feature large, purpose-built examination areas, often with stocks to ensure the safety of both the horse and the veterinary team during procedures. The center likely boasts state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging capabilities, including digital radiography and ultrasound, which require dedicated space and specialized housing to ensure optimal performance. Surgical suites within an equine hospital are considerably larger than those in small animal clinics, equipped to handle the size and specific needs of equine surgeries, complete with advanced anesthesia monitoring systems. Intensive Care Unit (ICU) stalls and potentially isolation units for infectious cases are also typical, providing a controlled environment for critically ill or recovering horses. The overall atmosphere strives to be calm and professional, aimed at minimizing stress for the equine patients and facilitating efficient medical care. The location at 362 Rugg Rd in Schuylerville provides a central and accessible point for horse owners in the wider Upstate New York area, with ample space for horse trailers and handling.

If I could give 10 stars I would! I took our horse there for a lameness exam and a second opinion. Dr. Steve and his staff were all so nice to us. They took their time to explain everything and get a plan going for our horse. He answered all my questions. I didn’t feel rushed or like he was trying to talk me into unnecessary things. Leaving I felt great and like I actually had a plan for my horse. They were also so sweet to my daughter. Great experience!

Upstate took excellent care of my horse, he was being treated for cellulitis. I live 3 hours away and was very concerned, they updated me daily and took good care of me as well 😊 I would recommend them highly.

I have now had 2 emergency colic experiences with UEMC and they also gelded my micro mini donkey. I can not say enough amazing things about them! From someone who has owned and showed horses for almost 50 years, I'm so grateful for their expertise, incredible care, and compassionate interactions with both my horses and with me. THANK YOU is not nearly enough for all they do! ....AND they have deserved every penny they have charged me and then some!! 5 stars isn't enough either!!

I did not have a great experience overall with this practice. I thought it might be a less expensive alternative then going to Cornell but it actually turned out to cost more. All of that would have been okay but I would have been a lot more confident in the care at Cornell. One of the vets got angry and defensive when I had questions. I was concerned because the treatment they were giving was not consistent with what I had heard as recommended from other veterinarians. They we're also angry whenever I tried to check on his status. I admit that I was incredibly anxious about the care my horse was receiving since I didn't know the practice, but nothing that was said produced any reassurance. If you drop your horse here for care, and are uncomfortable with what is being done, there really is no room to discuss. Hope this posting proves helpful to someone in making a decision about where to take your horse.
