You're a wallet on a conveyor belt. Notice how "5-star" reviews here praise pricing - never compassion. The last time I went here, they cooed over my expensive Shiba Inu. Called their vet out of surgery to come meet them. Handled them like fine china. Only minutes before that: my wife's poor, sweet, quiet, "ordinary" little cat? They didn't have an ounce of patience for him. His first vet appt ever. A cooperative kitten. Hadn't so much as looked at anyone wrong. Then two vet techs *initiated* his very first shot...by WWE-style wrestling him into the table. Like a pile-drive. While he cried. Wife and I were horrified. Never went back. I set an appt today for the first time in years. We're back in town, and my dog broke half his tooth lord-knows-how. It reminded me exactly why I stopped going here. I've had more kindness and empathy from the roofers and window repair I've called lately. Compared to an emergency vet appt. Something's terribly wrong about that. I'm going to drive 1000 miles tomorrow, so I can go back to seeing my usual vet in Alabama. They give their vaccinations in the waiting room. Not as profitable for them...but their priority is the animals. I don't know if there's a vet like that in upstate NY. I never found one. I'm sorry. If you're reading this...good luck.

Welcome to The Country Vet
Welcome to The Country Vet, a pet hospital located at 2133 State Rte 21, Canandaigua, NY 14424, USA. As a provider within the Pet Hospital category, The Country Vet aims to serve the veterinary needs of the Canandaigua community. However, based on the available customer reviews, experiences at this clinic appear to be quite varied, necessitating a careful and objective examination of the feedback to provide local users with a comprehensive understanding.
Information regarding the specific environment of The Country Vet is not detailed in the provided reviews. However, drawing from general expectations of a pet hospital, one might anticipate a standard setup including a reception area for clients and their pets, examination rooms for consultations and minor procedures, a treatment area for administering medications and other treatments, and potentially surgical and diagnostic imaging suites depending on the scope of services offered. The reviews do not offer any descriptive insights into the cleanliness, comfort, or overall atmosphere of the clinic itself.
Based on the limited information and the nature of a pet hospital, The Country Vet likely offers a range of veterinary services, which typically include:
- General Wellness Exams: Routine check-ups to assess a pet's overall health, administer preventative care, and provide owner guidance.
- Vaccinations: Providing essential vaccinations for dogs and cats to protect against common and serious diseases. One review mentions a preference for vaccinations being administered in the waiting room at another clinic, implying that The Country Vet might have a different protocol.
- Diagnosis and Treatment of Illnesses: Addressing various medical conditions through examination, diagnostic testing (which may or may not be explicitly mentioned in reviews but is a standard service), and appropriate treatment plans.
- Surgical Procedures: Depending on the hospital's facilities and staffing, surgical services ranging from routine spays and neuters to more complex surgeries may be available. One review mentions a vet being called out of surgery, indicating that surgical procedures are performed.
- Dental Care: Offering dental examinations, cleanings, and treatment for dental issues, which are vital for a pet's health.
- Emergency Care: One reviewer mentioned an "emergency vet appt," suggesting that the clinic may handle urgent medical situations, although the experience described was negative.
- Second Opinions: One positive aspect highlighted in a review was the clinic's willingness and speed in providing a second opinion.
- Follow-up Care: As indicated by an updated review, the clinic does engage in follow-up communication and visits.
The features of The Country Vet, as perceived by customers, present a mixed picture. Some potential features, based on positive aspects, include:
- Quick Appointment Availability: One reviewer noted the speed at which their pet could be seen for a second opinion.
- Transparency in Billing: The clinic was able to provide a breakdown of the bill prior to the appointment, allowing the owner to know what to expect financially.
- Willingness to Provide Second Opinions: This can be a valuable feature for pet owners seeking reassurance or alternative perspectives on their pet's health.
- Follow-up Communication and Improved Subsequent Visits: An updated review indicates a positive follow-up experience with a different veterinarian who was thorough and answered questions.
However, significant negative features and concerns raised by other reviewers include:
- Perceived Prioritization of Cost Over Compassion: One reviewer suggests that the clinic operates with a focus on financial gain rather than genuine care for the animals.
- Differential Treatment Based on Pet "Value": The anecdote about the Shiba Inu receiving special attention while an "ordinary" cat was handled roughly raises serious concerns about equitable treatment of all animals.
- Use of Force During Routine Procedures: The description of a kitten being "wrestled" for a vaccination is alarming and suggests a lack of gentle handling techniques.
- Lack of Empathy: One reviewer explicitly stated they experienced more kindness from non-medical service providers than from this emergency vet appointment.
- Brief Initial Consultation: A reviewer who sought a second opinion felt that the primary vet spent very little time with them during the initial meeting.
Promotional information is entirely absent from the provided reviews. There is no mention of any discounts, special offers, or new client incentives. Given the conflicting feedback regarding the clinic's priorities, it is difficult to speculate on their promotional strategies. Local users would need to inquire directly with The Country Vet to ascertain if any promotions are currently available.
The stark contrast in customer experiences at The Country Vet is a critical point for local users to consider. While some aspects, such as the speed of getting a second opinion and transparent billing, are positive, the serious allegations of prioritizing profit over compassion, differential treatment of pets, rough handling, and a lack of empathy are significant red flags. The updated review indicating a much better experience with a different veterinarian suggests that the quality of care and bedside manner might vary depending on the specific staff member encountered.
Local users considering The Country Vet for their pet's care should weigh these contrasting experiences carefully. It might be prudent to seek further information, perhaps by speaking directly with the clinic about their approach to animal handling, their philosophy on patient care, and their pricing policies. If possible, an initial consultation to assess the clinic's environment and staff interaction firsthand could also be beneficial. The fact that one long-time resident felt compelled to drive a significant distance to their previous vet due to a lack of trust in local options is a particularly concerning piece of feedback.
In conclusion, The Country Vet in Canandaigua, NY, presents a complex picture based on the available customer reviews. While there are some positive mentions regarding efficiency in certain situations and billing transparency, significant concerns have been raised about the clinic's potential focus on profit, inconsistent treatment of animals, rough handling during procedures, and a perceived lack of empathy. Local users are strongly advised to consider these varied experiences and to conduct their own due diligence before entrusting their pets to The Country Vet. Seeking additional information and potentially an initial visit to assess the clinic's environment and staff interactions would be a prudent step in making an informed decision about their pet's veterinary care.

Apr 10, 2025 · anon ymousWent here for a second opinion. They were quick to get my pup in and able to break down the bill prior to me coming so I knew what to expect. I took one star off because I felt like the primary vet came in and spent 1 minute with me before sending me out the door and as a first time meet… I didn’t love that. Updated rating: The country Vet called to schedule a follow up and this visit was much better. I met with a new Vet and she was thorough in following up and answering my questions!
Feb 01, 2025 · Lissa MillsReasonable pricing. Great staff. They saved both of my cat's lives.
Mar 22, 2025 · Dean WyantThey were awful on Day #1. Lack of options is the ONLY reason we continued to bring our pets here for over a year. The rest of the time we paid them, we found the Country Vet to be wanting in Care, Service, Attitude, & Cleanliness. I frequently left The Country Vet lamenting that there wasn't someplace else, near me, to take my babies. I have a great respect for GOOD veterinarians. I worked for a vet all through school and I know the difference between "good", "great" & "barely passable". Thankfully, we have a wonderful vet now, someone whose practice and morals align more closely with our own.
Dec 13, 2024 · Le TigreI have had my pets as patients at the Country Vet for almost as long as I have lived in the area. The doctors are beyond excellent and the staff is beyond amazing. I wouldn't take my pets anywhere else! This little girl just came home from being spayed, and she couldn't be better.
